The fact that Ablett Sr was maybe the best player of all time and then he had a son that rivals him for that spot is wild

His nickname was God , that says it all . Every time the ball went into his area the anticipation of something special was about to happen and it usually did. Played mostly of his earlier career on the wing or half forward. Later he slotted in at full forward where he kicked multiple 100 goal seasons . I am definitely lucky to have been alive to witness this man play the game 😊

We were teenagers who played Aussie Rules when Ablett was playing and although none of us were supporters of Gary's team the Cats, we would catch the train into the city just to watch him play. He was unbelievable. He'd never let you down. The GOAT in my book

One of the most talented football players of any era. Was also more then capable of a hip n shoulder that would have opposing players seeing stars.
Quite a showman in a time when there were a lot of great full forwards around.

I was at most home games in that era at Geelong, every time it came near Ablett, we expected an awesome mark and goal. We did a lot of shouting back then.

he played 248 games between 1982 to 1997 and kicked 1031 goals, i started playing football back in the 80's in a small town not far from Geelong, the city that the team Gary played for was based, every time they had a home game they would send out players to help coach us then alot of the time we would travel in to watch them play, nothing beter than watching him live at there home ground, the last time i saw him play live was 1995 against Sydney at the SCG,

Gary Snr was slightly before my time, but I remember him in the last few years of his career when I was just starting to get into footy as a kid.
He was absolutely a fan favourite. When the neighbourhood kids played footy out in the street, everyone wanted to be Ablett or Peter Daicos. Both insanely skilled with astonishing highlight reels, especially for that time (early 1990s).
Gary Ablett Junior is actually the best player that I ever saw, but based on those highlights the old man is right up there with him.

  • @musicalneptunian
    @musicalneptunian 2 місяці тому +1

Also bear in mind that in Gary Ablett's era the rules were a LOT more favorable to the defender. The defender could use both arms to restrain someone's arms well before the ball got near; that is not allowed today. As people in my family often say, if you took the great goal scorers of that era and put them into today they would score 100 more goals.

If you want to know how good he was, look at his statistics.
Played 248 games between 1982 and 1996 plus 11 for his State. Kicked 1031`goals, 3 times more than 100 in a season, 3 times 14 in a game. His accuracy was 82%.
He stood 6 ft. 1 and weighed 215 lbs. ..... for you yanks, 185 and 97 kg. for everyone else. He was one of the slowest runners in his team but made up for it in anticipation
and skills He played in an era where there were 3 outstanding full forwards who all kicked > 1000 goals or > 100 in a season .... what made him different was that he had
several team mates that were also high goal scorers and not just the sole target up forward for his team.

Will try a comparison. MJordan and GAblett began about same time. From start MJ had tricks others could only dream of having. Had a team built for him. GA same but no team built for him. GA skills didnt fade in bad weather like others. Still ran, kicked as if it was dry. Easily most freakish ever. That leap where he landed hard was in last 5 mins of game and he was 35yo.

  • @jsegal8385

Ablett was one of the best AND he was spectacular doing it. In the 1989 Grand Finale his team lost but he still kicked 9 goals. That is remarkable. He kicked 1031 goals over his career.
But to put that in perspective Tony Lockett kicked 1360 goals in total in the same era. He holds the goal kicking record.
He was so good at it he often had two opponents assigned him. Also he missed a full season due to being suspended for hitting people all the time. He was feared. Not spectacular like Ablett but better...Watch AFL top 10 enforcers. A Line in the Sand. Lockett is edited out in some versions of it but you will see the violence inherent in the game but it has been cleaned up in the last 20 years. Also Mason Cox an ex USA basketballer from Texas has been playing AFL at the top level for the last 6 years. Refer his You Tube interview with Pat McAfee for some insights
