- Scientists are researching how different plant species grow in space and it is an important step towards making long-term stays possible.
If astronauts want to stay in space longer they will need to replenish their own food supply.
So, how do you grow lettuce in space?

Good point at the end, like building the rail for the mining carts and general transport from lunar material that is mined locally (electric railed vehicles don't kick up as much dust, and in the low gravity a monorail becomes possibly possible so you only need half as much). can someone explain to me the fault with minor centrifugal force around a light? so basically a barrel right with a light hanging in middle and the barrel has a small turn in it to keep water from floating all over, then use any inert medium like rockwool, obviously has to be bigger than a barrel but you get idea
Nothing it just hasn't been tried yet. It was planned. The ISS was supposed to have an entire spinning AG module, but... corporations needed tax cuts and wars needed to be paid for instead.

Then, when it was morning, the Venerable Sariputta dressed, and taking his bowl and outer robe, went into Vesali for alms. Then he heard Sunakkhatta, son of the Licchavis, making this statement before the Vesali assembly. When he had wandered for alms in Vesali and had returned from his almsround, after his meal he went to the Blessed One, and after paying homage to him, he sat down at one side and told the Blessed One what Sunakkhatta was saying.
The Blessed One said: "Sariputta, the misguided man Sunakkhatta is angry, and his words are spoken out of anger. Thinking to discredit the Tathagata, he actually praises him; [69] for it is a praise of the Tathagata to say of him: 'When he teaches the Dhamma to anyone, it leads him when he practices it to the complete destruction of suffering.'
"Sariputta, this misguided man Sunakkhatta will never infer of me according to Dhamma: 'That Blessed One is accomplished, fully enlightened, perfect in true knowledge and conduct, sublime, knower of worlds, incomparable leader of persons to be tamed, teacher of gods and humans, enlightened, blessed.'[4]
"And he will never infer of me according to Dhamma: 'That Blessed One enjoys the various kinds of supernormal power: having been one, he becomes many; having been many, he becomes one; he appears and vanishes; he goes unhindered through a wall, through an enclosure, through a mountain, as though through space; he dives in and out of the earth as though it were water; he walks on water without sinking as though it were earth; seated cross-legged, he travels in space like a bird; with his hand he touches and strokes the moon and sun so powerful and mighty; he wields bodily mastery even as far as the Brahma-world.'
"And he will never infer of me according to Dhamma: 'With the divine ear element, which is purified and surpasses the human, that Blessed One hears both kinds of sounds, the heavenly and the human, those that are far as well as near.'
"And he will never infer of me according to Dhamma: 'That Blessed One encompasses with his own mind the minds of other beings, other persons. He understands a mind affected by lust as affected by lust and a mind unaffected by lust as unaffected by lust; he understands a mind affected by hate as affected by hate and a mind unaffected by hate as unaffected by hate; he understands a mind affected by delusion as affected by delusion and a mind unaffected by delusion as unaffected by delusion; he understands a contracted mind as contracted and a distracted mind as distracted; he understands an exalted mind as exalted and an unexalted mind as unexalted; he understands a surpassed mind as surpassed and an unsurpassed mind as unsurpassed; he understands a concentrated mind as concentrated and an unconcentrated mind as unconcentrated; he understands a liberated mind as liberated and an unliberated mind as unliberated.'

But when this good man is worn, old, stricken in years, has lived his span, and is at the close of his life, eighty or ninety or a hundred years of age, then he falls from that lucidity of wisdom.’ But this is not to be regarded in this way, Sāriputta. I, Sāriputta, am now worn, old, stricken in years, I have lived my span, and am at the close of my life, being round about eighty. Sāriputta, I might have four disciples here, each of a hundred years’ life-span, living a hundred years, and possessed of the utmost mindfulness, and attentiveness, and resolute energy, and with the utmost lucidity of wisdom. As, Sāriputta, a skilled archer, trained, deft, a marksman, may with ease wing a slender shaft across a palm-tree's shadow, so are these of extreme mindfulness, of extreme attentiveness, of extreme resolute energy, so are they possessed of the utmost lucidity of wisdom. If these were to ask me again and again a question about the four applications of mindfulness, and if I, questioned again and again, were to explain to them, and if they, on being explained to by me, should understand as explained, and if they were not to question me about any secondary and further matter (nor pause), except for feeding, drinking, eating, tasting, except for answering the calls of nature, except for dispelling fatigue by sleep, still unfinished, Sāriputta, would be the Tathāgata teaching of Dhamma, still unfinished would be the Tathāgata expositions on the phrases of Dhamma, still unfinished would be the Tathāgata ways of putting questions when these four disciples of mine, of life-spans of a hundred years, living for a hundred years, would pass away at the end of a hundred years. Yet, if you should have to carry me about on a litter, Sāriputta, verily there is no change in the Tathāgata's lucidity of wisdom.
Whoever, Sāriputta, speaking rightly, should say: ‘A being not liable to delusion has arisen in the world for the welfare of the manyfolk, for the happiness of the manyfolk, out of compassion for the world, for the good, the welfare, the happiness of devas and men.’ so, when he is speaking rightly of me, he would say: ‘A being not liable to delusion has arisen in the world for the welfare of the manyfolk, for the happiness of the manyfolk, out of compassion for the world, for the good, the welfare, the happiness of devas and men.’”
Now at that time the venerable Nāgasamāla spoke thus to the Lord: “It is wonderful, Lord, it is marvellous, Lord, that when, Lord, this disquisition on Dhamma had been heard by me, my hair stood on end. What is the name, Lord, of this disquisition on Dhamma?”
“Wherefore do you, Nāgasamāla, remember this disquisition on Dhamma as the Hair-raising Disquisition.”
Thus spoke the Lord. Delighted the venerable Nāgasamāla rejoiced in what the Lord had said.
