Yeah apparently . It's so great I wish John Farnham wrote it himself ( it's that good ) . Could see it as part of a rock opera musical soundtrack . ♑️✍️🇳🇴🇦🇺
I have . Have found memories of listening to this on cassette as a 15-16 year old at a homeless shelter . This song was the " B side " to the Burn for you single off the Chain Reaction album released in 1990 . ♑️✍️🇳🇴🇦🇺
just realized today that this is the original version. nice of mr marx to hand this song over to j farnham. similar to what m bolton did with the song "how am i supposed to live w/o u" by giving it to laura branigan initially b4 recording it himself
“Chains Around the Heart” (lyrics by Fee Waybill, music by Richard Marx) Out of our sight, but the vision is still the same. Out of our mind, but the memory remains unchanged. Stones thrown in anger hold twice the hurt; “Return to sender” could only make things worse. So, you’ve got to break these chains around the heart, ‘cause it’s been lonely too long. You’ve got to break these chains around the heart, so we can finally get on with our lives. Don’t ask me why, why we’ve lived with this all alone. Locked up inside, and it’s cutting us to the bone. Love is a stranger avoiding me; “Beware of danger” is the only sign I see. So, you’ve got to break these chains around the heart, ‘cause it’s been lonely too long. You’ve got to break these chains around the heart, so we can finally get on with our lives. Are you listening? Is there something that you’d like to say? Am I getting through? Are we just gonna leave it this way? So, you’ve got to break these chains around the heart, ‘cause it’s been lonely too long. You’ve got to break these chains around the heart, so we can finally get on with our lives. You’ve got to break these chains around the heart, ‘cause it’s been lonely too long. You’ve got to break these chains around the heart, so we can finally get on with our lives.
Why oh why this amazing song wasn’t released on Chain Reaction, I have no reason. Possibly it doesn’t fit the mood of Chain Reaction as a whole…but still. This is amazing and superior to Marx’s solo version. John, mate, you got to release a full blown rarities box set. Songs like this one, Don’t Give Up, Innocent Hearts, Thunder in your Heart, some official remixes he did like ‘Keep Talking’ need a nice remaster and a place for us Farnham fans.
Interestingly different lyrics. Richard's version says "You've got to break these chains around MY heart so I can finally get on with MY life." John's version says "You've got to break these chains around THE heart so WE can finally get on with OUR lives."
This was a B side for Farnham.Read somewhere he wasnt happy with the final production and never released it as a single. Dont think Marx was happy with this and released the song himself. Good song IMO.
One of my new favourites of John’s. Richard Marx wrote this song.

This is an awesome song!! I also love the version with Richard Marx on lead vocals. Such great and rare songs from such amazing vocal artists!!
I heard John's version before I heard Richard's (it was on the B-Side of "Burn For You"), but I did know Richard had written it.
What a fantastic thing youtube is. Listening to some JF songs that I've never heard before!
