@@Dead-EyeMetallove the song that starts with the drummer singing in the school. Name slips my mind right now. Then the whole band songs in the hallway later
So Hanabie started off as a cover band doing covers of Maximum The Hormone. They're BIG fans of MTH. So when you say MTH sound a bit like Hanabie, there ya go lol. Would definatly recommend a deep dive into MTH. They've been around for YEARS.
A couple things you had questions about, and some things you didn't. The instrument played by Mizyu is the shamisen, kind of a Japanese banjo played with a planchette. The song "Shimi" was originally done a while ago by Maximum the Hormone, and it was updated to add in AG. Also, MtH is a legendary Japanese band that has been around for a while. MtH almost always does this massive change-up stuff in their music. It's distilled chaos, and they are such skilled musicians that they can pull this sound off. MtH has been an influential band for such acts as Band-Maid, Nemophila and especially Hanabie. Hanabie actually started out as a high school MtH cover band club. So, basically, this is two super-groups combined for one of MtH's classics.
What you are witnessing is MAXIMUM THE HORMONE, this is an old song from them . The changes in tempo and style is what they do in every song. Usually 4 tempos, 5 or 6 styles, 4 different vocals in each song. They are the BEST
welp... here's another rabbit hole for you to fall into. MTH are OGs. They are always at least 4 songs in one. I freaked out when I saw this bc 2 of my favorite bands were going nuts together. And I'm surprised it was an absolute BANGER.
I'm basically the opposite of your experience I think. I've known about MtH and literally never heard of Atarashii Gakko until today when I someone let me know about the MV and I saw reactions to it and I went straight to go look up more AG videos.
Shimi is an old MTH song and this is a collaboration of different styles of music and also generations, but not vastly different attitudes. It works so well because the original version of Shimi had the slower more melodic parts sung by Nao, so substituting AG! sounds natural - Nao still gets to sing the final "soft bit". I'll leave it to MTH fans to give you more info on them. AG!'s name means "New School" and they are a song and dance group formed back in 2015 and are managed by Asobisystem and 88Rising. Mizyu (two hair bunches and air shamisen) had already worked with Asobisystem as a backup dancer with Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and Suzuka, Kanon and Rin joined her. Mizyu is three years older than the others and so was sometimes called the leader by journalists, and the others still look to her in some circumstances, but Suzuka's extrovert personality and strong voice make her the obvious front woman - she's the tallest and has the first solo in the video. Still AG! are always quick to say that they have no leader. They are all trained dancers and do all of the choreography themselves and work with various producers on the songs. Their artistic input sets them apart from most J-pop and K-pop idol type groups and their stage shows are performed with a unique joy and flair. They've all worked hard on their voices and now have excellent control with Suzuka taking the lead, Rin often rapping and Mizyu and Kanon doing more melodic parts. They just released a new album called "AG! Calling" and are on the second half of their first World Tour. AG!'s music is all over the place, but their style is always entertaining and fun and for an intro to them have a look for "Atarashi Gakko, Otona Blue, The First Take". Make sure you turn on the English subtitles.
As someone else mentioned, Hanabie began as a MTH cover band. But also Akane, Band-Maids drummer, was inspired to drum by MTHs drummer who, again as someone else said, was the woman singing you didn't recognise. Its a fusion of J-metal and J-pop music although Atarashi Gakko isn't an idol group. Maximum the Hormone were already around since the debute of anime Death Note, probably 6-7 earlier than that.. Since you mentioned Hanabie, maybe you should check out Knosis - FUHAI feat. Yukina✌🇯🇵
And when Hanabie (who started as a MTH cover band) needed a new drummer they got Chika who I noticed had already done a MTH cover of that - Chainsaw Man - Maximum the Hormone "Blade Length 200 Million Centimeters" drum cover at: ua-cam.com/video/hjkTYDhvCbU/v-deo.html
This was frickin nuts! But it works for some reason. Who was the genius who thought that this would work?! Doom metal, hardcore, pop, punk, AND rap? Holy genre bending! All the groups you've been reacting to have been in preparation for this collab! The drummer for Maximum inspired Akane from Band Maid to stick with the drums. Bro, 'Woke Up' remix, XG Princess version. It's got lyrics and translations. Awich goes off and spits some bars about Jurin and Coco. Super dope!
MtH have I believe 3 singers. The strange woman singing near the end was the drummer, Nao. Hanabie started out as a MtH cover band.
The whole band sings.
Ue-chan on the bass sings too sometimes! They all sing
Akane from band maid is a huge Nao fan.

MTH fans. "Heh heh heh 😈 🤘😁🤘 ☠ "
Zetsubou Billy was the song (opening song for Death Note) that made MTH mainstream (at least globally, & known to the anime community).
I believe MTH did one of the intros for Chainsaw Man.
