Her saying they paid 10,000 for the tanzanite is so misleading. They paid $10,000 for the shaman blessing/retreat and got the tanzanite for free at the end. And there is no way they didn't know this when they paid for the retreat. Also, I have a hard time sympathizing with anyone who blew their life savings on a freaking retreat!

My feelings on the situation are soley dependent on whether or not that 10,000 was paid for the retreat or the rick itself. Because it doesn’t matter if the rick is worth only a dollar in raw materials-if they paid 10,000 for it and it was ruined by someone then that person owes them 10,000 dollars. Now if the 10,000 was actually spent on the retreat as a whole like you say then they can blow that amount out their arse. But it still depends. Do you have any confirmation whether or not that was paid for the crystal or the retreat.

@@billyford2262 they lost a rock that was worth few hundred dollars doesn't matter how much they paid for it.
      They got scammed.
The delivery company lost it. The jeweller is not responsible for that.

I have the suspicion that the 10k was indeed paid for the shaman experience, and not the tanzanite. With how low the jewelers are pricing it, it sounds like the gem could easily be a gift from the excursion rather than a purchase. Their retelling of the story is very manipulative. Extortion is definitely the right word.

The fact she didn’t mention the 25k demand tells me a lot, she knew that wouldn’t look great in the public eye. I’m glad actual jewelers came out to talk about their professional opinion, helping break an echo chamber. They definitely got scammed for paying 10k (If they even genuinely paid that much.) and doesn’t want to admit that she was scammed. I can’t imagine how stressed the business owners are. I think the business could have handled this all better as well. Just my opinion though. Have a great week everyone!

That makes no sense to me. Never has. If it were a car you’d feel different. Somone without insurance hits you. You have low credit and you spent the last five years of your life paying off your first decently nice car (still ten years old and used but decent car) you overpaid because you could only get accepted by a low bank with high interest rate and it’s all you can afford on payments per month. You have kids. You work multiple jobs. You Mr baby your soccer mom car gets t boned and totaled. You ultimately have paid 15,000 for it and had 1000 left to go in payments. (A few months) you’ve paid for five years. The car is is now even more used and five years older than it was already. It has obviously depreciated in value and you were getting ripped off from the start but like I said you were between a rock and hard place and needed transportation and hoped it would help build your credit up too while you were at it. Now that’s all a waste. The person that hit you doesn’t have insurance and didn’t even have any paperwork on their car and tried to run when caught. That person claims they only should pay what the value of the car is now at this money which let’s say is 8,000 TOPS. maybe lower. That would feel like a slap in your face would it not? Idk what the law is on that or how it would work out. Possibly different depending on what state you live in. What am I saying this is the USA of course it’s different depending on the state but my point is on a moral level no matter what I think the person who drove recklessly without even a license or insurance should be forced to pay whatever you paid as long as you can prove you paid that much. It’s only fair it’s only right. It’s justice to me. You should entitled to what you put into it and whatever you paid for something is what you thought it was worth. They shouldn’t be able to say what it’s worth when they are the ones who broke it. And if you can prove it you especially should be reimbursed for it.

@@billyford2262I understand this point, but it’s very nuanced. I totally get what you’re saying with the car example. Let’s try a different example. Let’s say you and I go out to dinner and I am wearing a plain white t shirt. Then, during the dinner, you spill red wine on it, a total accident. We try to get it out but we can’t, and you say “I’m so sorry, I’ll buy you a replacement”. And then I tell you that I bought the shirt from a VERY expensive store/brand, and it’s actually a $2,000 shirt. Now, morally, should you replace the shirt? Maybe, but I think you would think it was highly unreasonable of me to request that. I do think at a certain point, you do assume a certain risk when you have these types of things. Should you have been more careful and not spilled the wine? Of course, but it’s also unreasonable of me to expect you to potentially go into debt because I chose to buy and wear a very expensive piece of clothing. I guess all i’m saying is that it’s not always black and white, in my opinion. Maybe that doesn’t apply to this situation or maybe it does, but in my opinion there’s just no one clear answer to that type of thing.

@@billyford2262 sometimes it sucks, but this is how things work.
If you kept your whole backstory, but swap places in the scenario, would you want to pay the full price of the car you have hit or just the current market value? It is unreasonable to ask someone to compensate the loss of an asset based on the value it had when purchased, even more so with assets that do get depreciated with time and use.

Most people in the metaphysical industry know nothing about what they sell. I've worked in several of these stores. Anyone who sells gems to heal you is scamming you. There is no scientific evidence that they can help. Anyone who claims that quartz or whatever can heal your mental/physical illnesses is a grifter no matter how wise or kind they seem.
When spending $10k on any stone do your research! Go to a reputable company! There is so much bs out there on the market and trade names get so confusing. Hell, "chocolate" and "salt and pepper" diamonds are trade names to sell low quality diamonds at a premium price.
To slander a small jeweler because *you* made a dumb mistake when spending your ENTIRE life savings on a gem you bought from an industry that is notorious for grifting is asinine. It's gross, it's ridiculous, and to anyone in the industry they look like an idiot.

As to the story. I think it said somewhere in there, that the Fed Ex driver had gotten their package out and ready because it was the next deliver after the one they were on. So the package would have been possibily been visible and therefore an easy grab and that's why only theirs was stolen. The only thing that never gets answers in this, is why the original report to the client was supposedly delated for 2 and half months. But then again, Why did they not at some point just go there and ask in the store what was up. The cleansing would make so much more sense to be 10,000 dollars, and the crystal being part of it, was just given to them after. And they're not having insured this ring themselves in the first place was irresponsible.

Having dealt with shipping companies and "lost" packages, the jeweler may have held off saying anything while the police and FedEx investigated, in the hopes that the package would be found. As to why they didn't insure it themselves, they may not have been able to get insurance on it. If you want something insured, it has to be appraised. A good appraiser would have said that the stone wasn't worth $10,000 (whether they paid that or not, no insurance company is going to insure something for an inflated value just because you paid that scam price for it) and that sentimental value doesn't figure into the actual value of a ring.

As someone who collects crystals and is into crystal healing; I agree with Andrew, the first jeweler. Some stones are great for healing or as meditative aids/foci but just aren’t cut out for jewelry. The upside is that commercial grade crystals are very accessible and you can use them in your own rituals for FREE! Honestly, in my opinion, that tanzanite specimen would’ve been safer and served that couple better on a healing altar or as a meditative focus.
They are getting very silly about the tanzanite, the problem with mystical experiences is while you can’t put a price on them, no one else can either; and thus they have to judge based on the material realm, and the material realm says that it’s not a 10k or 25k stone.

if the engagement ring is fourth generation, let’s say it was purchased in 1955 for the value two months worth of average salary, it would have been 685 USD, 8,045 USD in 2024.

It's why the jeweller did offer to make a ring of an equal value to the one lost. Jewellery Insurance entitles the customer to either have their ring repaired or replaced with a ring of equal value.
My feeling is that they didn't insure it because to insure a piece of jewellery, it would need it to be appriased. But appraisal only looks at the craftwork of the ring and stone, and you can see how much in denial Chelsea is that the 10k she spent is actually for the sentimental value than the quality of the stone. Tanzanite is not an expensive stone, and a small unpolished piece of Tanzanite would not even push 100 dollars. 😅
