Here's some advice too. Make sure the things you want to talk about with them aren't under an NDA. Make sure they can talk general techniques. How much are they keeping the artists in mind when developing? I know some of these dudes explanations plus your guys ability to put the actual uses as visuals to them will hit.

I hear you I like programming talks but THe thing is the guy would have to come up with a fully developed presentation for it to be remotely entertaining for the masses, a lot of factorization and functions basically a bunch of math.

The thing that always gets me with this show is how brutal the laser eyes are. Like, laser eyes are always depicted as a relatively tame power. Useful, yes, but seeing them just absolutely shred people, buildings, planes, is a completely different level. The point made by Niko around 16:10 is a good example of how understanding film is still crucial when doing higher level VFX work. It would have been easy to just comp that and pull the focus down through blurs and be done with it. But those little touches that still try to model what the camera (or our eyes in other cases) would see is what marries everything together. Props to The Boys for committing to the use of both practical and VFX.

Just as Corridor Crew is a spiritual successor to Lights! Camera! Action!, that show probably got made due to the interest in the various "behind the scene" specials that aired on network TV that covered the Star Wars films, ET, and other effects enhanced blockbusters.

A movie can have a hundred amazing cgi shots, but then as soon as one shot looks slightly bad, which most of the time isn't even the fault of the vfx artists, everyone starts talking about how bad the cgi is, completely ignoring every other shot. Black Panther is always the movie that comes to mind, most of that movie looks great, but there's that one horrible looking fight scene because the vfx artists were rushed, but I never hear people talk about the good cgi, only the one bad shot

That cheek-cut made me remember an old lesson I learned from the behind the scenes materials of Paul Verhoeven's sci fi movies. I think it was the nail color change shot in Total Recall in particular.
The lesson was that if you have the choice of adding an effect in shot or removing it from the start of the shot... Always opt for the latter. Because if you start with something painted out and then reveal the real footage with animatronics and prosthetics and practical effects during the shot, the audience won't be looking for the telltale signs of CGI until the CGI is already gone.
Not entirely applicable to the cheek wound, as they did end up replacing the makeup wound anyways. But it is still one of my go to rules with CGI and compositing.

Still one of the best shows on TV. The Boys is amazing. They really do nail the gore effects and making things look more realistic than they should. When swatter got hit with the missile and that smoke blew away it was perfect

"Keep it grounded" In terms of how CGI and practical effects are used, right? Not the effect itself? Because I still have nightmares about that guy that can shrink himself. He was grounded TOO DEEP imo 😆

As a VFX artist it's great to see an on-set sup who clearly REALLY knows his stuff. People like him are a huge asset to a show and save so much time and money. Hopefully I'll get to do some on-set supervision in the future.
I was also surprised that the people flying through the air weren't CG. I was assuming they'd film all those elements in focus but that was a clever point about also pushing the focus out so you have actual reference for manipulating the focus. And pgBokeh is a great node but holy crap it's slow.

its very cool i love how we get to see into how stuff like this is made. the only problem i saw is the bullet looks to be a hollow point so it would have shattered on the first impact of the cement pillar. Ps im kinda a gun fanboy so i know how certain bullets would react to certain impacts

As a gun lover and a lover of this show, the part that triggered me the most was that the bullet kept perfect shape after tumbling into numerous concrete pillars. I can wave to the side when guns shoot more bullets than they can hold but the whole slow mo scene drove me nuts lol, but awesome show overall!

The Boys really shows that good film making, just because you want to make art, is still possible. I think thats one reason why people like this show so much, its entertaining for the sake of being entertaining, no unnecessary extras. Additionally it has the perfect mix out of visual effect, CGI and practical effects. The jeep scene shows, practical explosions still hit different that pure CGI ones and visual effects help to make this shot better.

I lowkey love it when there are ooopsies uploaded in this channel like at 11:09. I uploaded the wrong version on one of my big short films that ended up getting like 3 million views. It was missing a VFX element and the whole time i'm like "JUST IGNORE THESE 3 SECONDS." And of course it's something I worked on tirelessly for weeks.

to Wren's question for gory shots to look at: The infamous fire extinguisher scene from Gaspar Noé's Irreversible. There's also a behind the scenes on the DVD covering how they made the effect and it's super fascinating when you consider the fact they shot this analogue. Would love to see you discuss that one on the show!
