I have a Neucleus 7 Cochlear. This week I tried to get an MRI for prostrate. One Hospital refused to do it. I have now had about 5 MRI's to my head. I do not have any wrapping. After the Cochlear implant my accoustic neuroma on the non cochlear side began to grow. Firstly the hospital refused to do the MRI but they checked with The Eye & Ear cochlear hospital in Melbourne Australia. 15 days of radiation followed. I then had to have another MRI to confirm the positive result of the Pin Point radiation. Different radiologists and was rejected again. I had to have a Cochlear surgeon certify that I could have an MRI. (despite the same hospital doing some before) I had no harmfull effects from the MRI and am now going through the system to find an experienced radiologist as My urology surgeon wants confirmation of his assessment. I find it is not common and many radiologists have not had expierence with the new Cochlear. But the Cochlear is wonderful. Bill from Melbourne Australia

Hi Brian, Thank you for making your video and glad you are feeling better. Today has been a circus for me as I had a MRI scheduled with the radiology dept already being directly asked by me 3 days prior if they have the splint kit for my CI which I got in 2008. Each person I spoke to and including cochlear America gave me incorrect information about who is to get the kit. So here I am waiting on my audi and ent to tell me if they will wrap me. Your video was so needed. So frustrated!! My prior shoulder and other knee surgery they surgeon did as he called it a "one stop shop". This means going in blind to see what he would find. But this other knee he really wanted the MRI because it may not be as severe and only requires a shot for now. So we shall see what the ent says.

May 2024: Hi Brian, I am from the GTA area (Mississauga). I have profound hearing loss in my right ear due to Meniere's disease. I have been referred to Sunnybrook for a Cochlear Implant. The surgery is scheduled for fall of 2024. Dr. Lin has assured me that Cochlear Implant are MRI compatible.
I understand from your experience, that MRI of an area far from the head (in your case, the hip area) is quite safe. Do you know what will be the situation if an MRI of the brain is required?

It is safe. I strongly suggest you contact your daughter's audiologist so that the audiologist can inform the MRI technicians and take steps to protect your daughter. Also, ask if the MRI technicians have experience with cochlear implant patients. Good luck!

Glad to hear everything went well.. My CI is being implanted in about two weeks but have read that MRIs shouldn’t be a problem if needed in the future. I also have hip issues and have been putting off surgery and going with physical therapy just to avoid the surgery. That will be my next journey I fear. Good luck with your recovery.

Very informational and quite reassuring. I have a CI as well and I have nothing bad to say about. Thanks for sharing your journey!
