Dr. Michio Kaku is the co-founder of string field theory, and is one of the most widely recognized scientists in the world today. He has written 4 New York Times Best Sellers, is the science correspondent for CBS This Morning and has hosted numerous science specials for BBC-TV, the Discovery/Science Channel. His radio show broadcasts to 100 radio stations every week. Dr. Kaku holds the Henry Semat Chair and Professorship in theoretical physics at the City College of New York (CUNY), where he has taught for over 25 years. He has also been a visiting professor at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, as well as New York University (NYU).

Michio Kaku: If you watch the "Big Bang Theory" on CBS television you see these clueless nerds who are doormats when it comes to the opposite sex, right. And you realize is there any basis in reality? First of all none of my friends are like that and all my friends are physicists, right.
Well there is a kernel of truth and that is some of these individuals may suffer from something called Asperger’s Syndrome which is a mild form of autism. These people are clueless when it comes to social interactions. They don’t look you in the eye, for example. And yet they have fantastic mental and mathematical capabilities. We think, for example, that Isaac Newton had Asperger’s. The greatest scientist of all time was very strange. He had no friends to speak of. He could not carry a decent conversation and yet here he was spitting out some of the greatest theories in the history of science. Calculus. The Universal Law of Gravitation. The Theory of Optics. And we think he had Asperger’s Syndrome.
Now Asperger’s Syndrome is a mild form of autism and in autism we have what are called savants. That is people that have an IQ of maybe 80 but have incredible mathematical and musical abilities. In fact, some of these individuals can hear one symphony and just play it by memory on a piano. Other people could be in a helicopter, have a helicopter ride over Manhattan, see the entire New York harbor and then from memory sketch the entire harbor. In fact, if you want to see it go to JFK Airport in New York City and you will see it as you enter the international terminal. So what is it about these people? Well, first of all a lot of them had injuries to the left temporal lobe. One individual had a bullet as a child go right through the left temporal lobe. Another person dove into a swimming pool and injured very badly the left temporal lobe. And these people wound up with incredible mathematical abilities as a consequence. And so what is it about their brains?
Well Einstein’s brain has actually been preserved. Einstein when he died had an autopsy in which case the pathologist stole the brain without permission of the family. He just realized that he was sitting next to something historic, took the brain, took it home with him, and it was sitting in a jar in his home for decades. He even drove across the country with the jar inside his trunk. And there’s even a TV special where you can actually see the cut up brain of Albert Einstein. And you realize first of all the brain is a little bit different. You can’t tell by looking at it that it’s so remarkably different but you realize that the connections between the prefontal cortex and the parietal lobe - a connection that is accentuated in people that do abstract reasoning is thickened. So there definitely is a difference in the brain of Einstein. But the question is did it make Einstein or did Einstein make this change of the brain?
Are champions born or are they made? That still is not known because people who exercise mental abilities, mathematical abilities, they can thicken that part of the brain themselves. So we know that people who do well in mathematics, brain scans clearly show that their brains are slightly different from the average brain. So in conclusion, we’re still children with regards to understanding how this process takes place. Tonight don’t go home and bang yourself on the left temporal lobe. We don’t know how it works. We just know that in a tiny fraction of these cases people with injury to the left temporal lobe, some of the become super geniuses.

cotxe11 you know ironically Einstein hated math too. he used simple algerebra to the extent that he could to form his theories and later on in life when he needed a more refined skill set for some of his other problems and work re taught himself how to use calculus and etc. and rather tried to use the simplest math possible in his works and therums.

The weirdest true story I ever heard was a woman who had a stroke and she woke up in hospital and she no longer spoke English but fluent French or Welsh, I think it was Welsh. There was another story of a man who got shot in the head and had literally a portion of his brain blown out. When he recovered he had incredible mathematical abilities, abilities he definitely didn't have before. We know so little about the brain.

And I cannot imagine the thousands of children that will be trying to become a physicist just because of your efforts and your character you're a remarkable person and I'm humbled and grateful to see you in my life on. 🌎
Thankyou Mr. Kaku for the cautionary warning at the end. I'd felt all my life that I was one good blow away from transcending my normal mediocre intellect, and midway through your talk I'd just about been convinced it was a good idea to try. Phew, close call
guess you'd need to try it the real way - exercising your brain in a way that changes it - as I mentioned becoming left handed (due to the opposite side operating it - the left side would be underused), but you can just do right-brained thinking more!
Asperger isnt a "mild" form of autism, and it is veeeeery important to note that by no means do all people with asperger have any "special" abilities. But some do
It's mild in comparison to other autism cases, not normal people.
I've even heard arguments that it shouldn't be considered an autism spectrum disorder because the brains of people with aspergers are vastly different from the brains of people with classic autism. Classic autism appears to be caused by deformed gray matter in the cortex. Aspergers appears to be caused by deformities in the white matter.

Let me be frank though, just because some people have asperger's don't neccessarily mean they are geniuses. Trust me, I was diagnosed with it and have spent some summers in a support camp. Some of the guys there were total idiots while others pretty smart.
One kid, only a year younger than me was obsessed with smurfs. He was autism defined, but without the smarts.
Are you sure it is asperger and not autism. If you are sure it is asperger do an IQ test you may not be a genius but at least above average or gifted because that is part of asperger. Having a high IQ also dosen't mean you're good at everything you just have to find your talent.

Well I guess it's time to hit my left temporal lobe to help me on my math test.
I had a bad injury to the left side of my head 15 yrs ago.Shortly after I developed an obsession with mathematics. I started teaching myself algebra and within a period of time I was up to multivariable calculus , vector analysis, partial differential equations , linear algebra, fourier analysis , even tensor analysis.So many areas and I'm still teaching myself more , I also draw,and play 3 musical instruments . I thank the Lord that my skills have become solid. I don't consider myself a super genius just and average intelligent person ,although people tend to see in me what I wish I really was.....
I struggle with aspergers. The way school showed me the patriotic table, they taught me to use it as a reference. I learned a story that reminded the listener of each element based on object in the story. Through visual thinking, and visual learning, I was able to learn the entire table in two days.

Food for thought. It takes a unique mind to sift through the 'norm' and see what others can't. With that said, that person may have lost other traits we consider necessary, while actually, we're simply smothering them with priorities their advanced minds chose to leave behind.
Hey thank you Dr. Michio kaku! I actually a week ago was reading about savants and asperger's because my nephew has Autism but he likes numbers, loves numbers always counting down or up even watching boxing he likes the timer. Very Unique individuals in my view.
This is actually such a relief for me. When I was 15 I sucked at math, later that year I fainted and hit my head, specifically the left side, on a metal bar, this was the summer holidays, the next year i suddenly excelled at maths and physics and now I’m at university with a scholarship to study physics, and I have a near perfect recollection of a lot of events, and more usefully all the physics equations and constants I’ve ever used even if I’ve only seen them a couple time.

Aspergers and autism are just the old natural forms of Masculine behavior. The autist could say something that would hurt someone else’s feelings and not know it, because they did not process the natural laws of social dynamics before speaking. They are good at math and or logical information. They do have feelings too, but it’s rare to see it unless they are indulging in gluttony or tiring their selves to death with physical work.

I have Aspergers and I don't consider myself to be a genius. I got good grades in school but I contribute it to dedication. It can be a curse having it. Sure I might be "smart" but I'm lonely too.
People with Asperger's are intelligent, but not necessarily smart- lots of brilliant mistfits did not get good grades in school. If you're both intelligent and smart, consider yourself to have won the lottery- most people are either one or the other, but to be both is rare.

Me too. I have Asperger's and also got good grades but they didn't come easily to me - I had to work hard for them.
Seeing Tyson around the one minute mark made my day. The Big Think does a lot of good simply by disseminating the information it does, but in that moment they couldn't have done any more good than that.

Unfortunately Asperger's syndrome is used as a scapegoat to correlate low social skills with being intelligent. The majority of people suffering from a lack of friends simply need to work on making friends. It usually involves turning off the computer and going out in society. I had to learn this for myself. Being recluse didn't endow me with knowledge or processing skills. I had Asshole syndrome.

Thanks Dr Kaku, as a neurologist diagnosed me with this as a young child and I did further studies on my own brain. I love self education, but get me into a social situation and whoa! Yay to brain damage! It's not that simple though, but he explains it for the masses to understand the power of the brain and that we're not monsters, or are we hehe;) I'm a humanist, but a complete independent minded individual who just focuses on complex issues we all face. Judgment will get us nowhere and everywhere if one can understand where I'm coming from. Even social media is a problem for people like me, but adaptation is a survival tool. Good day to all us weirdos!

what michio kaku left out was that in order to succeed in mathematics and physics you have to be a genius. i envy the autistic and asperger. i know it cant be pleasant having such a condition but just the pure math skills. since 2013 i worshiped mathematics wanting to learn. i want to be autistic i want those math skills. its all i ever wanted, and i want to speak like a robot. if only..if only i was a genius

you don't want to be autistic or asperger or anything related to it. Let me tell you, as asperger I can barely have sleep more than 5 hours a day bacuse constant nightmare (you should look into it, it's quite common among asperger), second you will not have successful organizational career and now I am slammed by this particular hard fact knowing that 16 years old teeneger are more successful than me. Third I also have limited "oprerational time", studying in college more than 3 hours and things usually gets messy after that.

And I have seen people "look" smarter and have successful career in organization. The math ability is no big deal although I have "advantage" among "other". Yeah suire I can study differential mathematic and quantitative finance when I am 19 only using free lecture video and torrented pdf, but it's just a part of bigger picture to succeed in organization such as corporation or government.
What the kaku talk about is the savant, the genius that is born and if you look into his other video "the neuro science of genius" you will need to be in some upper class of society to succeed in physic.
Some asperger have super long term memory like temple grandin or even tesla maybe can picture a whole machine in their mind. Some have good short term memory, so good that studying math is ilke studying second language but somehow suck in physic cos they can't even picture dropping ball in mind.
I met a 6 year old with asperger's, after i told him that pie equals 3.14. He then looked me dead in the eyes and continued to tell me every equation with pie.
Keep in mind he did not know what pie was or that it equaled 3.14 until after i told him.
Later on we were having some kind of mechanical problem with our pickup truck and he took one look at it and told us what the issue was and how to fix it.
So we did what he told us and sure enough he was right.
2 years later when this kid was 8 he had hacked into every computer in the city, which it was a very small town, and some how figured out a way to make all the computers play his favorite episode of barney.
This kid's name is kirsten and he is next level genius.
I have not seen him in about 10 years now so i can only imagine his level of intelligence now.
Once a student of history, I thought I was completely stupid until I met a professor of physics at my local Uni. We had a conversation about some of the things that interested him. We talked a lot. And apparently I wasn't a complete tool... "He must be insane", I thought... But although I didn't understand much of what he was saying, he kept encouraging me to keep being inquisitive and annoying. And I did. Very much so. Today I am giving lectures in theoretical physics and I absolutely love it. The moral of the story is: don't let preconceptions of your own abilities halter your progress. Some people may overestimate their abilities but a whole lot do the exact opposite. Cheers!
the human brain is fascinating, it has so many paths it take, and if some of these paths are blocked due to some let's say an injury like Dr Michio Kaku said, the brain will have to find a new path, and that new path would have to pass through new regions that would unlocked a new abilities for that person....which begs the Question, if we managed to unlocked these paths or some of it, what would we become??!!

I think it's safe to say that we humans with our brains are not one dimensional beings. We are multidimensional living beings and we have been trying to teach and work in these one dimensional institutions. We need to have a better understanding of ourselves and of our situation. Before institutions can change, people need to change and evolve on a host of issues.

I was diagnosed with asperger's syndrome when I was about 7 y/o. Funny thing that my cat tore my left lobe when I was about 4. I don't know if I should be greatful or not, because It's hard to put myself in a social situation or focus on school, but I love math. It has been more of a misery than a gift.

A note to my previous comment, I have been positive that my left temporal lobe was and is dark for a long time, only watching this video have I come to face the possibility that I may have actually developed the ability to map an accurate and perceptible mental image of my own cerebral activatity.

The term "supergenius" is completely superfluous, the only reason it exists is the dilution of the meaning of the word "genius" in contemporary American English: "Oh you ordered extra fries! Genius!"
Also, the characters on The Big Bang Theory were originally based on computer nerds such as myself, who are simply socially awkward. I know many people like that, in fact I am a lot like Sheldon Cooper when it comes to women. I don't have Asperger's, I just have plain social anxiety.
Sheldon does not seem to suffer from social anxiety. He can speak his mind completely without feeling awkward. He is more or less the exact opposite of someone socialy anxious. He has 0 social skills, he cant understand sarcasm,he doesnt get jokes, he cant understand awkwardness. feeling social anxiety actually means that the part of the brain that processes social behaviour is functioning very well. You are just overly aware of the people you talk to and what they think about you, making you tense up, overthink things and get nervous.. Atleast thats how i felt:p

That's a pretty big generalization. Social anxiety is pretty common in autism. I think lack of social skills itself can contribute to anxiety a lot, not saying it's the case for everyone.
As someone who feels very much at home in social situations, and has a hard time with numbers, I guess I am lucky in that we don´t need numbers as much as we need to interact with others. But if you are a lot like Sheldon Cooper, then you are extremely likeable!

I am not too sure. I think a good average or slightly above average intelligence is the most comfortable way to navigate a human lifespan. Though we do need the geniuses!!!
I was diagnosed with Asperger's at age 6, as well as ADHD (and C-PTSD). At age 26, I'm extremely well-socialized (but my awkwardness comes out in impromptu lectures on topics which either keep people in attention or cause them to tune out); that, and my phraseology is considered unique.
Presently I'm going for my Master's in mathematics, which I've always been extremely gifted at. I've always likened my ability to reason, speak, and write as a typewriter that won't turn off in my head, but it writes in only English or abstractions.
I hope to accomplish great things in this world, but if I had to choose between intellectual greatness and having loved ones in my life, I'd commit to being stupid. Thankfully I don't have to.

nikkitytom its because michio always pulls up issac newton because he looked up to him as well as einstein. And in most of what he mentions about gravity he pulls up newtons book "the mathematic principles of natural philosophy" and how he made his own calculation (which is calculus, thats why neil reacts right when he says calculus) in order to find calculations of the gravitational pull of the earth, the moon, and the comets that shoot across the heavens, in which humans have looked up and made stories about in order to explain said phenominon.

A lot of times it doesn't lol, but sometimes it does. The human eye is really complex and it heals really fast, the human brain is complex and it seems to heal in its own way. The way he is explaining it, the muscles in the brain are pretty much like any other muscle in the body. Here soon we will have an "information diet" and have to make sure we have "healthy information" to consume for our brains lol. The internet and the information age is changing the game all around the world.

Savants have a huge potential,imagine a world where we are able to make everyone savants but without the negetive part,everyone will be geniuses in this world and the technology there will be much more advanced then ours,savants have the potential to be the next step of human evolution(when we will learn to fix the negtive parts of it ofcourse).
While I agree that at face value that sounds great, but we have to look at the other side of it. You make the entire world "genius" and now you still have the same people emotionally, but now smarter right? So what happens when you have a smarter hitler, stalin, manson (arguable), Castro etc etc? I dont think that would be advisable even in the short term, and greater intelligence or higher capacity for learning does not make people have morals or more ethical or even have the social skills to be a successful and benefit to the world. Not surprisingly, most of those that I listed were already above average intelligence and yet were complete psychopaths.
The real question in my mind is: Are the risks worth the benefits?

why do geniuses always have to be MATH geniuses?? Everyone always goes to math, immediately. Why not any other subject? Can a person be considered a genius at poetry, songwriting, music, history, and subjects like these? I am so tired of math being the total measuring device for intelligence. This is making the left side of my head hurt.
well for the artsy parts like poetry the "geniusousness" alot of people would consider a matter of opinion.. and history... is really knowing/remebering-what-youve- learned alot of history?? Any one can remeber alot of things that doesnt make them a geninus.. but if you were to make corilations between history, but you'd have to PROVE it.. because otherwise you can really say ANYTHING to corrilate them.. Numbers dont lie. Math is in everything.. literally look at anything! Math makes you out ur brain to WORK. Im not saying that other arts and history and such don't make you work because even poetry in some cases have rythms and such in them that can take work (which and still be math in some way or anyother im sure..)
takkkkeee-- okay, take martial arts for example, you really need to put the mind and body to work... but you strive for percision, which in retro spect is math: reacting in the time, ensuring the correct angles and deciplcines. Think about it like this,.. Math is like a universal language for anything but art.. to understanding the world; how and why it works. (which we obviously havent figured it all out yet) so finding something new in this new "language" that hardly anyone knows about [in depth, of course].. is pretty genius.

Examples of two "super geniuses" that were not socially awkward were Richard Feynman and Mozart. Very charming with the Ladies, and were two of the smartest men that lived. Also John Von Neumann...loved the ladies, and driving fast, arguably one of the greatest mathematicians do the 20th century.
