I feel that the close ups of the flowers were definitely beautiful! I would’ve loved to see some complimentary colors as a background instead of just white but still beautiful shots! Also loved the portraits those were super crisp and well composed for how quick they were done, the black and white film was an excellent choice!
I think Mike won with the flower. He really grew that rose out of concrete by bringing to life that great shot. Who knew simplicity and beauty blended so well.
This can't be guaranteed but I think we all know truthfully who won the challenge--Mike. Not only the photograph was a great shot, but you've managed your time pretty wisely and with just the flower; I loved how you added the water and the petals weighed down, beautifully
Mike won for sure. Much more creative. As far as portraits go they were good but nothing out of the box. Mike definitely took that flower to the next level. Good stuff man 🙂
Both were good, but I feel I vibe with the flower photos Mike did. This is my first time seeing the channel. Just randomly popped up on my YT feed, but I'm happy it did. I'm excited to go back see what I've missed and I'll find you boys on IG. ✌️
I think you got this one Mike. The detail in the flower is excellent! The water was a nice touch. It was good you took your time and really strategized how you want your shots to look.
I'm a black and white guy so gotta be the portraits. Gotta say I clicked on this pretty randomly and was super shocked to see Tyler Shields; absolute legend.
Mike definitely did a great job with the flower and managed to ignore the technical issue that he faced in the challenge. It's a skill that every photographer really need.
Yeah I reckon the portrait won it just by a hair! Due to the depth I think, the flower shot feels flatter then it could have been. Controversial opinion but I really liked the flower image outside against his chest! Bit too much contrast but I loved the idea!
I think the best picture was the photo of the flower. The water gives a hint to the nature and that makes the picture extra good! :)) Keep up the good work ;)
I would say that the flower pictures were better than the portraits. It seems that the flash helps to get those close up details of the flower and the colours were amazing. Nice video:)
First off, what an awesome UA-cam recommendation! Dig the vibe. You got a new sub! Regarding the challenge, I think Jake won with the portrait. I love the simplicity of it and the fact that you weren't centered in the frame (not that there's anything wrong with that if it were) and you had a white shirt on, too, which just helped with the overall contrast of the image. PS, I appreciate the creativity with the water and the flower along with the colors, but with just the outer petals bending out, the flower just looks a bit broken. Beautiful image regardless. Keep up the vids! Excited to see what you got next.
Mike won the challenge. I would never think to take something like the flower and take a photo like those. Loved the white space and colours in the photo. Also you were chill, no rush 😎. Jake’s photo was great too of course!
As much as i liked the jake's portrait of you, I think you won the challenge because me as a photographer i would go a lil bit stuck to get shoot a flower and you delivered the pics so good! Loved the water ones! Keep making great content man! Greetings from Italy!
Mike the first round with you being the model showed confidence and strength in the photos; your friend did an amazing job. I liked the photo with you on right side of the photo with the space on the left. No doubt that you did an amazing job with the flower. I like the photo with the black background. I think you won the challenge Mike becuase you were willing to ask for some advice. Asking showed how humble you are in learning. Having confidence and the ability to ask some advice showed a different level of growth. Keep growing.
Tough call. I respect the challenge of shooting strobe at 1/30th on the P67. gutsy move :) but the flower wins it for me, the light, the colour...sweet captures
Honestly, Jake's portrait appealed to me more, but both of you took great photos! It's my first time on the channel, but for the quality of the videos, it's criminally underrated! Great content!
I'm digging your channel Mike. First of all, it's about shooting, not gear, which is nice. You do a great job telling stories and I'm learning from watching how you take your photos that I need to get waaaay more creative with my angles. Love the one on one challenges and how you've set yourself apart by drinking tea. A gutsy move. Well done.
Came across this randomly in my hunt for tips on film photography and fell in love with the channel! Both were so good, considering the time you guys had!! Jake's portraits were so clean, but I think I'd have to pick Mike's. The water with the flower just hit different, I liked that he took it as a chance to experiment and try a lot of things as well.
First of all, props to both Mike and Jake. Both set of photos came out crisp, sharp and dope. However, I give the slight edge to Mike. Making it a bit unique with the water was a nice touch and it's a picture I haven't seen before really. Jake's portrait of Mike was very well done, but I've seen those photos before. Also, I always rock with color over b&w.
I give the win to Mike. Even though both images came out great, the fact that you introduced another element(literally lol) into your photo which made it a much more powerful image, won you the challenge in my opinion. To not crap on Jake, I really like the way he framed the portrait. Great video as always Mike! Congrats on reaching 400 subs :)
I’m sorry Mike even if i like your way of doing things (more instinctiv) for me the best picture this time was the portrait. The main reason is for the black and white choice, the framing of the subject (asymetrical) and the small shadow behind you that allows you to pop from the wall. The video was cool ! See ya from Paris
Jake’s portraits are undeniably clean but I’ll go with Mike bc his shooting was more challenging and required some more skills and imagination. He shot in different light situations but still be able to kept them consistent.. also he was being creative with water pouring down and those are what I like about shooting in general- be creative with what you have.
@@MikeGrayFilm haha thanks for organizing this giveaway really. It’s okay, I have a bunch of film cameras already, let’s give it to someone else that needs it more ☺️ always enjoyed to see your videos... here’s to 1 million subs soon 😏
For real. The outcome is what matters, and the flow and feel of the flower photo(s) really spoke to me. So yea, the flower for sure. Keep up the great shooting, man.
That’s tough, both subjects were completely different and hard to compare. The portraits were SUPER clean (I’m a sucker for black and white, specifically Tri-X) and that modeling was great, but I can’t help but see the flower as more of a creative challenge. I think adding the water was a really nice touch. Plus I just got a Mamiya RB67 so I’m biased towards the Mamiya haha
You guys are my fave watch on youtube right now. I'm going with Mike - the water droplets frozen in motion create a sense of stillness and colors pop so smooth. Sidenote, I'm at a pretty similar place career wise, learning medium format film and opening a studio soon. How did you end up linking up w a pro like Tyler? And how has it been shooting in studio during the pandemic? I haven't been able to since graduating in May and miss it so much!
Thanks for your feedback Jake! LA is pretty small and it just happened haha. He’s great! & working in the studio has been solid man. Definitely learning so much every time in use strobes.
For me Jake won the battle. I like the portrait of you more than the one with the flower. The water on the flower was almost invisible and in general i think the portrait was very well done.
I think the pentax 67 won this challenge. The portraits are serious and "distant" but still much interesting. The flower was just a flower, aesthetically pleasing but not narrative compelling like the portraits. Gl everyone!
I think Jake won the challenge because the portraits were contrasty and I felt like the black and white film was a great choice. The flower shots had really great colors though it was a close one!
Imma have to go with Mike, getting to shoot an object and with a RZ which is more for portraits requires much more practice and skill imo, also I'm biased towards color lol
I would say for this challenge - it would be the portraits Jake took of Mike because I've been really liking how portraits come out on black and white film. But definitely enjoyed how minimal and simple both the portraits of Mike and the flower were.
Already told you in the DM how much I liked that video bro, but I need to leave a comment here to help you out with the algorithm haha. Tough choice to make between you two! But I'll have to go with Jake haha. His portrait of you is clean! Wish you had time to do something with fire, I would have handed you the win haha. I really liked the flower outdoor with Jake holding it which creates a very dark background.
I'm a little biased towards portraits but I think Jake won, that picture of you a bit to the right of the frame is really good. I respect that you put a bit more effort in the technical stuff with your shots tho
I’m going w Jake on this one. Portraits were fire. I will say you had some strong flower shots too. Bright side, now you have some great portraits for the gram.
Imma say Mike, theres serenity I get from the droplets on the water being so well in focus and he did it without a tripod? Idk maybe I’m too new to the game it looked difficult.

Sick one, since im a digital shooter im quite happy that you focus more at the practical taking pictures front then getting the tech right. Transporting emotions in shots get only harder if you focus to much on tech stuff. Ask tyler about the invers squer law
Mike definitely won for me! The shots of the flower especially with the water where way more creative. And well done how you shot with the Mamiya hand hold. I just discovered your account and I really like your content!
Wow working with one of the greatest? What a pleasant surprise this video was! I think the flower won. Its vibrance, detail and elegance. But tbh we all won cuz this fire ass video.
I think Mike is the winner for this one, those flower shots were great. I liked to see closer up shots since the bellow focusing system on the mamiya is nice for macro stuff, the photos taken were beautiful 😌
I still have my Pentax 6x7s. I feel guilty for not using them since I went digital. Both median format camera companies produced great cameras and lenses, though I think they both had a different vision about how their cameras would be used. Apples vs oranges...
I like the zen approach. Minimalist is good. Almost a Richard Avedon portrait with the white background leaving us to examine ourselves as much as the sitter in the portrait. The trip is content and composition. Perhaps a lower camera height and a slight upward angle was the way to go. There needed to be a little more asymmetry somehow. Good call on shooting mono. The flower was all about form and composition Portra really sang in the colour department. The shot that caught my eye was the one against the black hoodie. We could tell someone was holding it and that added another dimension to the shot. That was a different way to create a narrative in the image. I think there was scope to use a 50mm and the bellows extension to make the flower more dramatic and larger in the frame.
About the flower shoot, why are the lower ISO Portras better for detail? Is it finer grain? Should'a tried some Velvia .. but the colors are very nice on the Portra 400 and the details really stand out. That's gotta be the RZ talking.
I got to say Jake took it away. The portraits he took of you were sharp, great use of shadows and complemented your strong facial features. Both were great, however, your portraits evoked more emotion to me
1. Jake wins. 2. I would have liked Mike to photograph the flower from a top down angle to show the real beauty of the blossom. In contrast Jake’s Portraits came out perfectly, pretty fire actually.
Great video! I'm shooting with the Mamiya RZ67 and I like it, even if I'm dreaming of owning a more "flexible" Pentax... My favorite is the bw-portrait :)
I think you won for sure. I feel like hake could’ve gotten a bit more creative with the shots and the angles and you were able to figure out a more creative angle with the flower
I like both. But if have to choose one it will be Mike. There were something in the flower shot.. I mean I could look at that shot and stare for hours. By the way I like your channel's vibe.❤
Jake won this challenge. I liked the variety of shots taken with the flower. If this was about all of the photos from Mike and all of the photos taken by Jake, I'd choose the photos taken by Mike. But, just judging the top two photos I like the portrait better. I could be biased to black and white though.
The portraits were pretty good, but I really really enjoyed the photos of the rose! That was definitely the winner for me. The shots were a lot more diverse (Tyler played it too safe to me). the photo at 6:50 was actually my favorite. Dope challenge!
Everyone is saying the portraits, but I'm gonna have to say the shot of the flower with the water won for me.
Thanks a lot Joseph!!!!
Quickly becoming one of my favorite channels on YT. Good vibes, some well-shot pictures, all it takes. Who cares who won the challenge? (mike did tho)
Thanks Hendrik. I appreciate you! You're right, we just wanted to make it a little fun competition. It's all love though!

I like the picture of the flower more because it has such a simple color palette and the petals just sit so nicely together. Looks regal.

Funny thing about those cameras is they’re so different, if one had the money, having both would be awesome.

Mike won, the differentiation between each flower shot is my reason why. And the water effect was 🔥 🔥 🔥

Dawg how are you a film photographer and a awhile ass model 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
gotta be a triple threat! lol
I think the flower won the challenge for me. I love shooting portraits but it was a unique way of shooting still life.
Me personally thinks that the flower is the more harder subject to get right and more interesting to capture.
