wow you blew the other reviewers of the new bionicle sets out of the water. the way you described a lot of things made it feel you didn't miss a single detail. i'll be looking forward to your next reviews. ps. you can also make takua out of 2 protectors ;)
Wait wha-- oh, a sex joke. Actually, now that you mention, how the fuck do matoran reproduce?! What, does the mother have to give birth to the organic part WITH the metal bits too?!
GammaWALLE If I recall correctly, Matoran didn't reproduce at all. They were constructed by the Great Beings to live for thousands of years, which is one reason that there wouldn't be much of a need for them to reproduce. However, Agori (and Glatorians, probably, I'm not sure) were all basely organic and reproduced like humans. I do believe Matoran ate by absorbing food through their hands, as well... Anyway, not all of my info may be one hundred percent accurate, but one could always take a peek at the Wiki if they were that bent on knowing.
I only just realised how the protector’s masks kinda look like Jaller Mahri’s mask. Not sure if this was intentional but with Jaller being captain of the guard in G1, they might’ve taken inspiration from his mask to make the masks for these leader characters.
My favorite has to be the Protector of Stone. The way his leg armor is placed makes it look like baggy shorts or some sort of clothing cut off by silver shin plating that they'd be tucked into. There's just something great about him that the other protectors don't quite tap into at the same level that he does.
What I love about the new shooters is that the ammo is, by it's nature, modifiable. It's not just a coloured ball anymore. you can fire anything that has studs on it. Make little missiles or energy blasts, or fire bricks. Also I think that the way that the legs are made makes them look sortof like satyrs. Dunno why.
That would be cool to see them firing actual missiles or the like, especially the Earth protector. I think it’s the feet; they kind of look like hooves.
Even though I wish they had different masks, I like these characters. Even if some of their builds are the same, each of them have enough variety to stand out, and they make great use of the new stud shooters. I don’t know why, but for some reason, I kind of think of the air protector (I know it’s jungle, but I can’t help but call it air) as the leader of the protectors, kind of like how the swamp roborider was the face of the line. I think it’s his height. He’s the tallest of the protectors, or at least he appears taller, so he has a bit of a commanding presence. Since he and the protector of Stone have the same build, I could see them as allies or even rivals.
Gotta admit, seeing Narmoto in the animation go from hobbling around like a turaga to _whipping out a gatling gun and fire tonfas_ was… Well, it was a shock, to say the least. Good subversion.
Excellent review. I got PoF as my first Protector, and have yet to get the others, mainly because he feels like a spiritual successor to Jaller (Small Cordak-looking gun, mask looks like an Arthron, etc), but yes, he did need some heavy mods.Looking forward to your review of the Toa.
The only thing I do have to complain about in the protectors are the six shooters where the studs can get lost. Spare parts fill those gaps, but it's still unsettling to lose some small LEGO part.
I think the protector masks are the best of G2. They look awesome and united and make me want ro build a village of them... I think its like the old minifig face but in bionicle
Is it weird that I don't like modifying the official sets? Even if they are a bit poop, like the Protector of Fire, I don't like modifying him, I like to keep it official. I don't mind when other people do it, but when I do, it feels, weird...
With what you said about the masks being the same, Bionicle already did what Jang claimed all the same faces did, while still not making their faces all look the same. Each Toa Mata and Turaga all had different masks, but the masks they did have weren't just theirs. A pakari was just as much Takua's or Kapura's mask as was Onua's for example
Kieran Fowler I'd say yes, it is just a bit strange, if only because lego, on some level, always encourages messing around with the pieces you have. Their way isn't always best. Maybe your way is better?
While I love all the Protectors, I do have a couple of issues with them. For one, in terms of sets, I do view them having the same mask to be a con, but in terms of story, I do like that every Protector and Matoran have the same mask, as it makes the island feel more unified, or at least that's what I think. I'm also not a huge fan of how the Protectors of Fire and Ice have really tiny limbs, as it makes them feel less complete to me. I do really like the blasters, because not only are they better versions of the Toa Mahri's Cordak Blasters, but I also love how different each blaster has its own distinct look, with the Protector of Earth being my favorite for that reason. I also like their colors and the fact that they look good even without their blasters is an impressive feat if you ask me. The Protectors are pretty awesome if you ask me, and I can't wait to gush about the Toa in the next part. :)
Truthfully, the Protectors remind me of the best parts of Bionicle back in the olden days. I missed having those smaller sets that you could get in your stocking, and these are a lot better than what we had been getting for a while!
Blatantly Heroic Are you talking about the Matoran sets from 2008 and onward? Yeah, comparing those Matoran to the 2007, 2006, and even 2004 Matoran, they were very disappointing, but they did make some nice teams with their respective Toa and Makuta sets.
protectors have names now, Narmoto (fire), Vizula(jungle), Kivoda(water), Korgot(earth), Nilkuu (stone), and Izotor (ice), Protector of earth is actually the only female on this team
Middlefingerstudios1 that can't be right lego messed up because in the original bionicle everyone from the village of Gacorro are girls look it up so the water protector must be a girl
Mr. Furious So... because that's the way it was in G1, they aren't allowed to change it for G2? Why even make a reboot if you can't change anything? It's stupid that everyone from one village was a girl and pretty much everyone else was a boy. It's nice that they're breaking down those outdated gender divides and basically letting there be both boys and girls in every village. It's just unnecessary for the blue people to all be girls. Lego didn't "mess up" because this isn't a mistake. It's a welcome change that improves the series.
I just got Kopaka and The Protector or Earth today. I have no qualms with them, other than the masks not being attached super well and the bullets for the turret things being easy to lose. But their better than giant ball launchers. Although I replaced Kopaka's shield hand with one of the older ones. I just don't like how the new fist pieces work with shield-like things. I love how they brought back the gear system, and the Skull Spiders look awesome.
How I personally would handle the mask issue is, well the same way LEGO did it in G1, recolor the Toa’s masks. They didn’t have to give Narmoto Tahu’s Hau though, switching up which protector for which mask with appropriate colors would have been very cool, for example, Kivoda could have gotten a blue Pakari from Pohautu, and since the skull villains have blended versions of the Toa’s masks, the Protectors could have the same.
I love the new Protectors. Just wish that each had his/her own individual mask. Hopefully Lego might decide to release Mask packs in the near future if Bionicle sells well. Although I highly doubt it as everything has already been established in the Webisodes, who knows? With the coming of the 2016 wave and Ekimu's return, perhaps...just maybe he might decide to make different kinds of masks for each villager. One can hope.
I really like the protectors. I think of them as little Toa, though they are the villagers. G1ers may say that all of them are too similar, but if you showed to me Korgot's silhouette, I'd say, yeah, that's Korgot.
Looking back, it's really sad. When Bionicle G2 came out, I was still in high school. By the time I got my first job and had my own debit card to get these sets, the line was cancelled. The cheapest Uniter Tahu I could find was over $100 on Amazon and Ikir was about $70. I kinda wish I got more of these sets and paid my dad back, I'd even pay back interest knowing that it's pretty much impossible to get them now
Looking at the protector of fire, I think his weapons could just be flaming bonrai. A type of short scythe. They are often wielded like punching daggers due to how the blade sets in relation to the hand, but unlike punch daggers, bonrai aren't cumbersome to slash with, as they don't have the blade fixed to a band around the knuckles. In lame-mans terms, they are basically chain scythes without the chain. And yes, I am aware that I probably misspelled bonrai.
The fact that they all have the same mask and no names screws up the world building I expected and that is really sad but these are small sets done right! PS: the banana man joke gets me everytime lol
Kinda sucks I only got Narmoto and Korgot. I wanted to get the rest of the protectors 5 years ago (when they weren't overpriced on ebay and amazon) as well as Onua. While, they weren't perfect sets they were good sets and I respect what Lego was trying to do and experiment with.
Well hey, glad to hear such good news about these ultimate villaigers, The Protectors Yes, the build qulity's evident even through the vid the masks, oh well agree the rest of the induvuduality make's up fort it
Damnit Nick at first I was only going to pick up the protector of ice but after seeing them all lined like that I have to get all six. My poor poor wallet.
NickonAquaMagna So now when I *already* think you were dead I am now having hope, looking at the comment every day so I think you work on it "today". Get it? Eh? no. okay Imma leave.
Just gonna say this upfront: The Protector of EARTH is actually the chick, out of all of 'em, Korgot. Kivoda, or whatever the Protector of Water is called, is one of the dudes. Great Review Nick. I ordered all of the sets and can't wait to put them together. Oh and by the way, I'm 90% that the villagers wears the same mask purely for artistic license. Like every X-Metru Matoran had the same mask as its respective Great disk Matoran in the comics. Do we have some confirmation that the Protector of Water is female ?
NickonAquaMagna I totally understand what you meant in either this video or another one about when you talked about the male-female ratio in BIONICLE. I think female characters are awesome especially when they are just as tough as the men. I really hope if they create a new cast of Toa that they can make the ratio more even and have more personalities besides the wisest of the group. I'd really be happy if they made the "leader" of the group female.
Shields Actually Gali's personality is that of water. Smooth and easy going unless enraged, in which she becomes a terrible storm that destroys all in her path. Onua is the wise one of the group, which is so awesome to me! People always make the bulky guy stupid, but Onua is wise AND strong!
You said you dont want to see this Protector mask again, I want to see it again once - well maybe 6 times not doblemolded on Villagers, i would like to see LEGO making smaller sets than protectors (without weapons), even if they will be clone sets. Theese protectors are basically turaga so i want to have all - Matoran(villager) , Toa and turaga(protector) Theese six sets (maybe 7 with the little fire child from the animation) would be great for use of this mask mould and than nothing else...
Well, yeah, they don't have any distinctive masks to give them personalities, and I think they don't have their own names for the same reason. The protector of fire is not Vakama or Jalla, he's protector of fire, duh. That's the only downside I can see, though.
It's funny seeing how people still comment about the gender of the water and earth protectors 9 years later hahah . Also , please , someone name the music used , i havent played metroid prime in years
This video was uploaded well before that information came out. You don't think I'm only just learning about this just now, do you? Please look at the upload date of a video before commenting on it. It's something I've learned to do that saves SO much trouble.

I only just realised how the protector’s masks kinda look like Jaller Mahri’s mask. Not sure if this was intentional but with Jaller being captain of the guard in G1, they might’ve taken inspiration from his mask to make the masks for these leader characters.
i'm not going to lie. metroid prime music works really well with bionicle. must be the mysteriousness that they both have in common
Yeah. I've always thought music for a new Bionicle game should have this feel.
NickonAquaMagna agreed. maybe not so much when the story progresses (depending on how they handle it) but definitely in the beginning

RobotFilmProductions™ fun fact, Kogot, the protector's real name, is female
Middlefingerstudios1 yes finally !different genders for more then element!
RobotFilmProductions™ yeah, all the villages have male and and female villagers
Middlefingerstudios1 this is the one thing that the original bionicle failed at
Its a girl
Apparently Protector of Water is a dude and Earth is a girl. Shit's weird.
I think it's a nice twist!
Both water and earth are female.
@@justynakowalska3087 no... the protector of water is surprisingly male.
@@SyrupyShana ok

Hub Hikari That pretty much sums up my thoughts.
Wow, the Protector of Stone is the tallest protector but the Pohatu (the Toa of Stone) is the shortest Toa.
Awesome review! I can't help but notice the Tallon Overworld theme in background. Great choice of music!
The blasters are cool the way they fire in a flurry, but their small size makes them very easy to lose. I lost 2 of them on my first firing. :/
I'd suggest getting some more studs and extending it out by about 4-5 studs. This creates longer studs that fire out which might help finding them :3
but what if they shatter about?? Oo
Ah... hmm... maybe fire these instead with some of the yellow pieces attached;

cool, Metroid Prime music.
the protector of Earth is Female not male
