      Heather West it might be hard with the moon out. You’ll get better results during a new moon. Still give it a try for fun

    Love your videos Dude, Really Enjoyed, I also found out a while ago; I use the canon 90d with a 12mm samyang at oso 400 and 640 and the lumix s5 with the 20 to 60mm stock lens and the colors do look much better on the trails, I use the live composite mode now to watch it ong....All the best from the u.k and have a great Xmas and 2022...God Bless

    Hey tks for the tutorial. I took a lot of star trails but certainly not that colourful. Im wondering why a long duration of 6 to 10 hrs can bring out the colour. It adds more trails and the circle become more complete but I don’t understand longer duration equals more colour. If the trick is underexpose why won’t a shorter duration bring out the colour although it may just look half circle. And don’t he give a little push on the saturation or vibrant slider in post?

      No problem! It was weird at first under exposing the night images however it helped so much to capture more color in the stars!

    Great video, thx! How many images would be needed to get these results?

    • @Milkywaymike
      @Milkywaymike  2 роки тому +1

      This was about 3 or 4 hours and roughly 400 photos. The longer you go the better your results will be. Lincoln Harrison typically does 6-12 hour long star trails.

    so it seems that that lower the ISO the better the colour ( to a point of course) if you use long exposure times, would that wash out the cooler? and how much time in between photos (interval?) do you typically use to get such colour?

    • @Milkywaymike
      @Milkywaymike  3 роки тому +2

      Question 1) No, the exposures may be longer however you still under expose by lowering the ISO and increasing the Fstop. Those values are dictated by how dark a location is.
      Question 2) The exposure time is whatever you want it to be (25, 30, 45, 60 seconds) or several minutes of you want. The shorter the exposure the more photos you will end up with which makes it harder for computer software to handle. So for example Lincoln Harrison will take 45 or 60 second exposures to reduce the number of photos to work with. The interval between photos is typically 1 or 2 seconds depending on how fast the exposure can write to your cameras memory card. You don’t want to go any longer than that since it will give you larger gaps. The last key ingredient for color is length of time. Lincoln Harrison usually shoots for at least 6 hours.... 6-12 hours is his norm and it will give you a lot of rotation...then when you under expose you can pull out more color from the stars.

    (Sorry for my English) Plase there is something I do not understand. If he is taking photosfor 6 or even 10 hours.. what about batteries? Can you stop between the shoots to change the batery?

    • @Milkywaymike
      @Milkywaymike  6 років тому +1

      He shoots with a Nikon D810 with most likely a power grip or an external power supply. My D810 with a power grip can photograph 8-12 hours so it's possible to go that long without stopping the camera to change batteries. If you need to stop and change batteries you have to be careful to not bump the camera out of its position and to do it as quickly as possible.

      Milky Way Mike thank you so much. I'm poor. Can't aford that type of camera. Hehehe. Thanxs for the info. Love your channel. I've learned a lot.

    • @Serkin76
      @Serkin76 5 років тому

      Camera is not the problem, every camera body should be connected to an external power source. Try to find an adaptor that can be fit into the battery place of your camera and buy a powerbank or connect your camera directly to the lighter of your car. On Google you will surely find some stuff at a reasoneable price. Beware of dew... water condemsation can ruin your photosession. Good light (and forgive my English).

    To get real colours of Stars, one of my friend advised me to increase the aperture 1 stop of my base aperture. Is it true ?

    • @Milkywaymike
      @Milkywaymike  5 років тому +2

      Nilotpal Dey That depends on your other settings. You definitely need to under expose to capture more colors because if you are exposing for the foreground the stars will be white (over exposed). I would say decrease your iso by 1 or 2 stops. So typically my night images are ISO 3200 F2.8 Shutter 25 seconds... for star trails make it ISO 1600 or 1000, F4 shutter 25 seconds. (In a low light pollution area). If you are in heavy light pollution make your iso even lower.
