Kenny Johnson was such a breath of fresh air too. World unlike anything in the main line series. Focus on politics over characters. Nice update to the sphere grid. Tried an actually new battle system. I blame the reaction to 12 for what we got in 13
Kenneth Fegley I only played the first three way back when they were released on the GBA and DS but the setting and story seemed interesting to me. I never had a Playstation console so I never got to play it. Now I can on the Switch along with all the other FF games.
I'm on my way to beat this game for the 5th time, this is the best final fantasy game I've played and will never change my opinion until they make the same mechanic system it's just absolutely addicting and makes me want to grind non stop with no regrets lol
Final Fantasy XII was and still is one of my favorite game. I remember buy the huge game guide and treat it like a bible. Having the possibility to play the zodiac age version on the switch will be a completely new experience.
Tatsu Hell yeah. I’ve sadly grown a bit impatient these days with RPGs that have a separate battle screen. Don’t get me wrong - FFVI, FFV, FFX, FFIX and FFVII will always be some of my favorites ever. But I just love the ease of the gambit system, seeing the enemies in the world, and not having to worry about choosing commands every turn. And experimenting with the order of each command, Also, the 2X/4X speedup option in Zodiac Age is one of my favorite features ever for traversing the huge world when on foot

(gambits seem annoying at first but they are AMAZING once you get used to them.) (beside that it was kind of something inspired from FFXI ~)
I feel like I'm biased when it comes to this game. It's so addicting to me and I'll always return to it. I put 400+ hours into this with my first full clear
The story fell flat after the draklor laboratories. that was clearly when the directorship changed. Before that point, the writing, scenarios and setup was all there. We were robbed the payoff. Outside of that, it has the best extra content of any game in the series, and that includes the massive FFXV.
Gambits were and are amazing. I always hate the AI in these games, but in 12 you get to tweak the AI. I had a massive AFK Job Points set-up that I could leave running for days while I was busy doing other things. Sit down, spend your points, resume playing. Spoiler alert: don't do this. It will break your game and ruin any sense of difficulty. But you can, and I think that's awesome.
I love this game. It's tied with FFIX for my favorite game. The fact that I can now play it on the go is a dream come true, Nintendo/Square are getting my 50 bucks for sure.

We all have different playstyle and views.. but ill say no its not that hard.👌 if you know what to do you could get it around 50+ hours if not you can go over 100+ easy. With 2x speed and 4x. I remember my longest save in ps2 was like 400 hours with another at 300. But now it cuts down soo much thanks to the speed up🤣
Just seen this go on sale on the eshop. I trust Jordan's takes on JRPGs, and as this is one of very few FF games that I haven't played yet, definitely going to be adding this to my collection
12 will always be my favorite final fantasy game, even though when I first played it I stopped playing exactly where you did. Played through it all the way with the ps4 port, and I try shoving it down all my friends throats at this point. Lol it definitely does feel though that you have a bit of ff10 bias though, like everyone who grew up playing it. I never played it, but I'm playing it as I'm typing this on the switch. It's hard to compare the 2 games because of how dramatically different the combat is, but 12 is definitely the far better game imo. The color pallette is better in 10, sure, but character visuals, mannerisms, and basically everything else is just terrible in comparison. The gambit system is absolutely legendary once you get enough gambits and figure it out.
I don't know why people are saying it's a bias. I like one more than another. That isn't being biased, that's just having an opinion. I'm open to liking both, I have no agenda against 12 whatsoever. I like 12 a lot and only scored it 0.5 lower than FF10.
Its far to say that an opinion wrapped up in nostalgia, lacking a far amount of subjectivity, can easily be referred to as bias. I'm not saying it's a terrible thing, Ive just noticed it massively with people who played 10, didn't really play a lot of other ones, and then said it was king. Did you happen to play all of 12? It's understandable if you didn't because it's long as sin himself. Lol 8.5 is definitely a far rating though, I just can't agree with it being lower than ff10 from a subjective standpoint. Obviously still giving a like and subscribe because this is quality content regardless.
It's absurd to call Ivalice bland, it is far more colourful than X. And the cities are tens times bigger and expertly crafted than any cities in X. Awfully biased review, especially for someone who obviously didn't get past the first 15 hours of the game considering the video footage.
Cities are big, but they are just corridors to shops. I'm not sure what the bias is to be honest? I play both games I like one more than the other. Is that a bias? And, I only have so much hard drive space buddy. Do you know how much space recording takes up? After recording about 10 hours I felt little need to have any more. People always complain about spoilers and stuff too.
The reason you figure them as bland... is because they are written in a more realistic manner. Squall, Cloud, Tidus... all horrible writing and convoluted story. Vaan is clueless bc that's exactly how he would act. One exception is Penelo. I love her but she really is just along for the ride. Baltheir ofc... 10/10. If anyone ever deserved a spinoff its him.
That was my reaction as well. First Final Fantasy game I couldn't be bothered to finish. It did feel more realistic, which is not what I wanted in a video game. That said, it was worth a try by Square-Enix, but it's less memorable because of it.

I love the Ivalice Saga... Being an avid Tactics fan, I was really happy seeing for the first time Buhjerba, one of those floating islands mentioned in one of the treasure hunting quests in FFT. FF12 depicts a golden age of technology and magic that have been long lost, and in Vagrant Story we see its remnants: shadows of their former selves. I liked 12 for it's depiction of everyday commoners, Vaan and Penelo: they don't need to be stoic like Auron or moody like Cloud and Squall, they're just street kids in an adventure bigger than them, they just tag along for the ride towards liberation. Nice review, I bought it for switch soon after.
Good review, I'm gonna give this a go on the switch. FFXII is so rich, amazing. FFX takes my heart though, regardless of platform. That game was a masterpiece, semi-open world/3d environment, with Nobuo and Masashi Hamauzu on music, Junya Nakano as a third composer!
Final Fantasy XII may not be the best Final Fantasy game in terms of memorable characters or lore, but it certainly was ahead of its time. It’s receiving the praise it is now because of how popular politically-driven fantasy franchises like Game of Thrones and The Witcher have gotten. Had the entry had been given true freedom by the original director’s vision of the project rather than Square Enix’s insistence to have a young main protagonist replace the intended Basch (thus forcing a painstaking rewrite of the finished script that forced writer Yasmumi Matsuno to quit due to stress), 12 would’ve certainly been received far more fondly now the way FF Tactics is looked fondly on today.
Its a good game on its own merits - just don't expect it to be a representation of Final Fantasy series as a whole. After all, it wouldn't be a Final Fantasy game without over-the-top melodrama, Squaresoft's insistence to overexplain plot details, and ackward voice acting and/or translations, and teenage angst - things that are absent in this game
This is a must buy for me but not because it's a final fantasy game. It's more because this is as close as we'll get to an ogre battle sequel. And eventhough I like ff, to me ob>ff.
Great review and I'll probably pick it up once it gets a price drop. As for Final Fantasy X / X-2, the Japanese and Asian version has both X and X-2 on the same cartridge. I picked up the Asian version from play-asia for $50 plus $8 shipping. Given it would have cost me $50 here in the U.S. plus tax, I gladly paid extra $4 for the physical copies of both games, even if it's on the same cartridge.
I wasnt too immature to accept different, I just didnt like that style of different at the time. But I admit that I am much older now and I am liking xenoblade 2, which I think is a similar playstyle so maybe I will play FF12 now. It just depends on the time I have compared to other games as I dont play games as much anymore either. I love them, I just spend time on other things too.
Xenoblade's battle system definitely seems heavily inspired by FFXII, though I think XII's system is a bit simpler. Of course the gambits add a different layer of depth.
Looking for a switch FFXII remastered review... Found a (mostly) general FFXII instead... Really need the comparison between the original, the remastered PC/PS4 version and Switch version... As I already played the other 2 versions (Original and PC/PS4), also the real original - non Zodiac Age - version. really one of my favorites, especially the gambit system. What I need to know is, what's new in this switch version? is it worth to get it?

Was hoping you'd go into specifics regarding the differences between the PS4 and the switch version so I can decide if the cheaper version is a good idea. Is the Japanese dub on both? Are the visuals noticeably better on the switch or about the same compared to the PS4?
A good game like this is worth $100 in my opinion... so when ppl complain about $50... You only live on this blue planet for so many years so don't wait for a great game for year. My 2 cents. :/

Fair review. I've got it for the nostalgia and I gave up with it far in to the story on the original PS2 release. Maybe the speeding up and the portability of it this time might just get me to go on and finish it this time

FF12 was my first FF game, and I loved it. I’ve played it on PS2, PS4, and soon on Switch. I’ve played nearly all the other FF games since my first time with 12, and wouldn’t call it the best, but still my first FF love. 😀
I never beat the game either, I got all the way to the final boss and stopped for some reason.. think I never went back because I forgot how to efficiently play the game?
I managed to snag ff12 from target during spring sale for buy one get one half off for 25 bucks they included them even tho they were pre orders also got the deluxe rage 2 edition. So 12 was worth the 25 to me. At least I didnt have to order as import version for the physical unlock ff10,10-2
FFXII was so different from previous titles - it caught me off guard. I assumed Vaan would be the main character where the story was very invested around him (like it was in VII, VIII, IX and X). But it wasn't. Instead I remember thinking, I'm just watching the "real" main character (Ashe) through Vaan's eyes. No romance developed with Ashe either and although I admit that I kinda enjoyed Ashe's P.s. I love you storyline combined nicely with an awesome political back story. I remember struggling to feel like Vaan was a part of it. I'm just watching it unfold from a distance. I loved the gameplay, the feel of the world, the political back story - I just couldn't connect.
Even tho i already got all ff 7 to ff12 from ps extra... i am tempted to get switch physical version for this one and ffx/x-2 combo... Just because i am afraid i would not be able to have patience to platinum ffx-2 along with this one...i also kinda afraid if i might not like the combat. since back then i kinda quit ff 9 10 and 12 at like 10 percent of the game on ps1 and ps2 era... until this year when i actually restarted everything from 0. while trying to finish every singleplayer ff game.. i might get this physically since its cheaper than digital.
I feel the problem with the characters is how painfully obvious it was that Balthier/Ashe were meant to be the main characters, not Vaan. So he and Penello just feel shoehorned in.
They very likely were. I vaguely remember reading that at the time Japanese audiences were more receptive to teenage aged main characters. But so much work was already put into Balthier and the cast. Which is probably why vaan and Penello have the personality traits of twigs. I still love XII and hold it in high regards but I can never get over how much better the story feels when you forget Vaan exists.
Actually, the director wanted Basch as the main character. But Square felt the audience would connect more with a younger character more like the main characters of all the last FF games. The director also left the project part way through. As in, the one who created Tactics and Vagrant Story, and is known for his mature story-telling.
SwitchWatch Agreed. FF12 does feel like a downgrade. But the worlds are far more open and wide, so that’s the trade off. And the art style is still strong and beautiful. Just not quite as good.

On Nintendo Switch version you can change the job of a character if you ask nicely to Montblanc but yeah, I have to agree with you. Though the possibility to have different sets of gambit for a character is a great ad.
I felt that way initially, too, but after playing with the jobs for a while I grew to find them more interesting than the original license board. And now that you have the option to switch jobs, it has even more potential.
How is it that FF 12 with visual fidelity upgrade, quality of life improvements, deep mechanics, politically engrossing story received an 8.5 (good nonetheless), while FF7 just because it’s your favorite game received a 9. I’ve been a fan of the channel but this one’s a letdown.
I think some of your criticisms are fair and some of them are really just personal opinion (which is fine!). In the end, I'm a massive fan of this game and my only disappointment is that there is no 60fps option. True, the game doesn't *need* it, but I played some of the PC version at 60fps and it was glorious (after a few minutes of playing when I got used to it, anyway). Either way, this is the first portable version of the game and I can't wait to get my copy!
At the end of the day, reviews are personal opinions. If there's something I said that I don't like that appeals to you then it's fine. At least people can take that on board and I've informed them on what they're in for. 😊
2007? Im sure I had memories of sitting in my room at my mums playing this as a kid, but I guess not as I was 21 then, with a proper job, living in my own house with my girlfriend etc... probably explains why I didnt give it much time then though. Hated it in fact. I was going to give it another try now on Switch, but not for £45.
I got the ps4 version... Also played it on the ps2 back in the day😎 Great game.. Awesome battle system... I just get annoyed when the story ends because there is no more dialogue from the characters.. The judges are cool bad guys and baltheir is the dude!
UNPOPLUAR OPINION AHEAD!....FF7 is still overhyped all these years later due to nostalgia meanwhile FF12 is finally getting the recognition it deserved in the first place. It got amazing initial reviews on its release but no one cared...
Ambassador Tokarev my feelings exactly mate. I loved 7 upon release and it was the title that really got me into the series. Having recently bought 10/10-2 remaster on Switch, the game is showing its flaws. I bought 12 on release too and criminally only gave it less than a dozen hours, this was partly due to the fact that I got a PS3 on launch and moved on from my PS2 - probably the single biggest fact that many done which resulted in FF12 not gaining the momentum it rightly deserves. I’m really looking forward to revisiting this on Switch and giving it the attention it deserves.
I don't remember how many times a beat this game... even moded the japanese IZJS to english... never played Zodiac Age though.. Never really fell inlove with ffvii & ffx.. i was just done with them after i beat them once.. ffiv, vi, ix, & xii r still my faves... maybe ffv a little

5 second ads of which there is about 1 or 2 per vid which helps us create these vids in the first place. Without the ads we can't invest in future games like these. So while I get why you use it, it doesn't hurt the big ad companies, or UA-cam but small creators like ourselves who need all the revenue they can get which doesn't even cover the cost of making this one video. Only other way we could do it is strip the ads all together but then we would need to rely on Patreon or something which we didn't really want to do. Imagine everyone used ad blocker UA-cam would die along with your favourite creators.

I played this back in the day and loved it. I'm not too keen on the $50 price tag though for such an old game. I'll finish up FF X/X-2 first and then see how I feel. Probably will wait till some sale, like Black Friday.

I REALLY wish the Gambit system was used in more games, it's so good to be able to tune the A.I this much.
You've always been able to control party members turn by turn without any of the gambits even in the original. :/

If you have a mage make sure you have the charge gambit makes an amazing difference

Personally I think Final Fantasy XII has one of the better stories in the series (not the best) I do agree about the characters though.

It's absurd to call Ivalice bland, it is far more colourful than X. And the cities are tens times bigger and expertly crafted than any cities in X. Awfully biased review, especially for someone who obviously didn't get past the first 15 hours of the game considering the video footage.
Cities are big, but they are just corridors to shops. I'm not sure what the bias is to be honest? I play both games I like one more than the other. Is that a bias? And, I only have so much hard drive space buddy. Do you know how much space recording takes up? After recording about 10 hours I felt little need to have any more. People always complain about spoilers and stuff too.
What currency does Play Asia use? On mine it shows Rs, Google says Indian Rupee. Is this correct?

The reason you figure them as bland... is because they are written in a more realistic manner. Squall, Cloud, Tidus... all horrible writing and convoluted story. Vaan is clueless bc that's exactly how he would act.
One exception is Penelo. I love her but she really is just along for the ride.

That was my reaction as well. First Final Fantasy game I couldn't be bothered to finish. It did feel more realistic, which is not what I wanted in a video game. That said, it was worth a try by Square-Enix, but it's less memorable because of it.

Saw my kid brother play this back in the day, never finished it though, but I always liked the aesthetics and characters.
The art designer for these games is great, I just wish there was more vibrancy and colour.

I love the Ivalice Saga... Being an avid Tactics fan, I was really happy seeing for the first time Buhjerba, one of those floating islands mentioned in one of the treasure hunting quests in FFT. FF12 depicts a golden age of technology and magic that have been long lost, and in Vagrant Story we see its remnants: shadows of their former selves. I liked 12 for it's depiction of everyday commoners, Vaan and Penelo: they don't need to be stoic like Auron or moody like Cloud and Squall, they're just street kids in an adventure bigger than them, they just tag along for the ride towards liberation. Nice review, I bought it for switch soon after.
Good review, I'm gonna give this a go on the switch. FFXII is so rich, amazing. FFX takes my heart though, regardless of platform. That game was a masterpiece, semi-open world/3d environment, with Nobuo and Masashi Hamauzu on music, Junya Nakano as a third composer!

Final Fantasy XII may not be the best Final Fantasy game in terms of memorable characters or lore, but it certainly was ahead of its time. It’s receiving the praise it is now because of how popular politically-driven fantasy franchises like Game of Thrones and The Witcher have gotten. Had the entry had been given true freedom by the original director’s vision of the project rather than Square Enix’s insistence to have a young main protagonist replace the intended Basch (thus forcing a painstaking rewrite of the finished script that forced writer Yasmumi Matsuno to quit due to stress), 12 would’ve certainly been received far more fondly now the way FF Tactics is looked fondly on today.
I kinda feel like Basch and Lady Ashe are still the main story. Vaan is just shoehorned in there because of his brother.

Its a good game on its own merits - just don't expect it to be a representation of Final Fantasy series as a whole. After all, it wouldn't be a Final Fantasy game without over-the-top melodrama, Squaresoft's insistence to overexplain plot details, and ackward voice acting and/or translations, and teenage angst - things that are absent in this game
This is a must buy for me but not because it's a final fantasy game. It's more because this is as close as we'll get to an ogre battle sequel. And eventhough I like ff, to me ob>ff.
The problem with the price of X/X2 was the fact that I had zero desire to play X2. Just separate them and let me buy the one I want.
I also played it for about 10 hours but at that time I also had other interest and other games.
Dragon Quest 8 was so much better at that time,for me
Great review and I'll probably pick it up once it gets a price drop. As for Final Fantasy X / X-2, the Japanese and Asian version has both X and X-2 on the same cartridge. I picked up the Asian version from play-asia for $50 plus $8 shipping. Given it would have cost me $50 here in the U.S. plus tax, I gladly paid extra $4 for the physical copies of both games, even if it's on the same cartridge.

I wasnt too immature to accept different, I just didnt like that style of different at the time. But I admit that I am much older now and I am liking xenoblade 2, which I think is a similar playstyle so maybe I will play FF12 now. It just depends on the time I have compared to other games as I dont play games as much anymore either. I love them, I just spend time on other things too.
It seems Xenoblade took a few lessons from this game, but improved upon them. I think Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and 2 are better games than this
Xenoblade's battle system definitely seems heavily inspired by FFXII, though I think XII's system is a bit simpler. Of course the gambits add a different layer of depth.
Looking for a switch FFXII remastered review... Found a (mostly) general FFXII instead... Really need the comparison between the original, the remastered PC/PS4 version and Switch version... As I already played the other 2 versions (Original and PC/PS4), also the real original - non Zodiac Age - version. really one of my favorites, especially the gambit system.
What I need to know is, what's new in this switch version? is it worth to get it?

Loved this game on my PS2. The Gambit system once you get the hang of it makes grinding a breeze.

Fair review. I've got it for the nostalgia and I gave up with it far in to the story on the original PS2 release. Maybe the speeding up and the portability of it this time might just get me to go on and finish it this time

FF12 was my first FF game, and I loved it. I’ve played it on PS2, PS4, and soon on Switch. I’ve played nearly all the other FF games since my first time with 12, and wouldn’t call it the best, but still my first FF love. 😀

I managed to snag ff12 from target during spring sale for buy one get one half off for 25 bucks they included them even tho they were pre orders also got the deluxe rage 2 edition. So 12 was worth the 25 to me. At least I didnt have to order as import version for the physical unlock ff10,10-2
FFXII was so different from previous titles - it caught me off guard. I assumed Vaan would be the main character where the story was very invested around him (like it was in VII, VIII, IX and X). But it wasn't. Instead I remember thinking, I'm just watching the "real" main character (Ashe) through Vaan's eyes. No romance developed with Ashe either and although I admit that I kinda enjoyed Ashe's P.s. I love you storyline combined nicely with an awesome political back story. I remember struggling to feel like Vaan was a part of it. I'm just watching it unfold from a distance. I loved the gameplay, the feel of the world, the political back story - I just couldn't connect.
The artstyle is similar to that of ff tactics and Vagrant story, its meant to be more grittier compared to something like ff10.
I love the art style in FF Tactics and it suits a darker style for sure, but it just didn't work for me in a full blown mainline game.

Even tho i already got all ff 7 to ff12 from ps extra... i am tempted to get switch physical version for this one and ffx/x-2 combo... Just because i am afraid i would not be able to have patience to platinum ffx-2 along with this one...i also kinda afraid if i might not like the combat. since back then i kinda quit ff 9 10 and 12 at like 10 percent of the game on ps1 and ps2 era... until this year when i actually restarted everything from 0. while trying to finish every singleplayer ff game.. i might get this physically since its cheaper than digital.

I feel the problem with the characters is how painfully obvious it was that Balthier/Ashe were meant to be the main characters, not Vaan. So he and Penello just feel shoehorned in.

They very likely were. I vaguely remember reading that at the time Japanese audiences were more receptive to teenage aged main characters. But so much work was already put into Balthier and the cast. Which is probably why vaan and Penello have the personality traits of twigs.
I still love XII and hold it in high regards but I can never get over how much better the story feels when you forget Vaan exists.
Actually, the director wanted Basch as the main character. But Square felt the audience would connect more with a younger character more like the main characters of all the last FF games. The director also left the project part way through. As in, the one who created Tactics and Vagrant Story, and is known for his mature story-telling.

SwitchWatch Agreed. FF12 does feel like a downgrade. But the worlds are far more open and wide, so that’s the trade off. And the art style is still strong and beautiful. Just not quite as good.
As I said before. I was gonna get this first but sorry Dragon Dogma got to me first but FF 12 is what I wanted to play on the go while in high school when it came out like 12 years ago.

The original job board was WAAAY better then the sphere grid. It allowed you to fully customize your character.
On Nintendo Switch version you can change the job of a character if you ask nicely to Montblanc but yeah, I have to agree with you. Though the possibility to have different sets of gambit for a character is a great ad.
I felt that way initially, too, but after playing with the jobs for a while I grew to find them more interesting than the original license board. And now that you have the option to switch jobs, it has even more potential.

How is it that FF 12 with visual fidelity upgrade, quality of life improvements, deep mechanics, politically engrossing story received an 8.5 (good nonetheless), while FF7 just because it’s your favorite game received a 9. I’ve been a fan of the channel but this one’s a letdown.
I think some of your criticisms are fair and some of them are really just personal opinion (which is fine!). In the end, I'm a massive fan of this game and my only disappointment is that there is no 60fps option. True, the game doesn't *need* it, but I played some of the PC version at 60fps and it was glorious (after a few minutes of playing when I got used to it, anyway). Either way, this is the first portable version of the game and I can't wait to get my copy!
At the end of the day, reviews are personal opinions. If there's something I said that I don't like that appeals to you then it's fine. At least people can take that on board and I've informed them on what they're in for. 😊

2007? Im sure I had memories of sitting in my room at my mums playing this as a kid, but I guess not as I was 21 then, with a proper job, living in my own house with my girlfriend etc... probably explains why I didnt give it much time then though. Hated it in fact.

Ambassador Tokarev my feelings exactly mate. I loved 7 upon release and it was the title that really got me into the series. Having recently bought 10/10-2 remaster on Switch, the game is showing its flaws.
I bought 12 on release too and criminally only gave it less than a dozen hours, this was partly due to the fact that I got a PS3 on launch and moved on from my PS2 - probably the single biggest fact that many done which resulted in FF12 not gaining the momentum it rightly deserves.
I’m really looking forward to revisiting this on Switch and giving it the attention it deserves.

5 second ads of which there is about 1 or 2 per vid which helps us create these vids in the first place. Without the ads we can't invest in future games like these. So while I get why you use it, it doesn't hurt the big ad companies, or UA-cam but small creators like ourselves who need all the revenue they can get which doesn't even cover the cost of making this one video. Only other way we could do it is strip the ads all together but then we would need to rely on Patreon or something which we didn't really want to do. Imagine everyone used ad blocker UA-cam would die along with your favourite creators.

I played this back in the day and loved it. I'm not too keen on the $50 price tag though for such an old game. I'll finish up FF X/X-2 first and then see how I feel. Probably will wait till some sale, like Black Friday.

@@escanor7938 Personally FF13 was the worst overall experience for me. Yes, the graphics were top notch, but it was the most forgettable FF for me so far. My personal favourites are still FF7 n 8. 9 was also good, but I just couldn't click with Zidane 🤣
