WPVI 6 is iconic. I love that the station has retained its 6 logo like FOREVER. The numeral 6 is large and bold like Philadelphia, reminding me of KPIX, WJZ, and the old logos for KDKA and WBZ. One of the strongest ABC affiliates in the country.
Forgot to note how much WPVI's branding resembled KYW 3 old logo and branding, or vice versa. Fierce competition and odd moves for two major stations in the same market.
This opening is so iconic that is why there is very little variation even with the different graphics changes over the years. It really didn't decide to follow in line with the ABC O&O graphics packages until the current package and even then it was a full YEAR before they adapted it. Another thing is that a lot of people did feel a bit weird about the current package still keeping footage of Chopper 6 in it considering it went down a few days before Christmas 2023 and killed the pilot & photographer aboard. The station has recently mentioned some stories being covered by a "Chopper 6" so the assumption is that the station has a new Chopper 6 in play now.
Meanwhile, you probably noticed a CGI helicopter (with a CGI Peco tower at night) being used for the 11pm openings in late 1997-early 1998 since the early 90s Chopper 6 had its own issue.
They found a way to stick with the traditional opening shots yet they have added their twist on the new Owned Stations graphics package. You knew that was absolutely no way they were going to lose MCTYW as part of it.
@troykearney9516 ABC flagships allow more freedom with the music options. WABC still has the 1999 music, WLS still has their mid 90s "News Series 2000" theme, and then you have this piece, which still runs good after 50+ years. Plus, that montage stuff is something that is now basically exclusive to WPVI (and WPHL for 10 PM airings) since everyone else only has a 10-second sting as the "intro"... NOT. I'm a Lucky 2003 born kid from Salem, NJ, who was lucky enough to have this to be a part of my life.

If you mean the orchestral version of Move Closer to Your World, there is a BIG reason why it wasn't kept. The viewers HATED it so much that the station reverted to the original version 5 days after the change. The song is considered to be Philly's National Anthem and messing with that song was considered sacrilege to the viewers
@@troykearney9516 Many Action News viewers don't like the 1996 orchestral version when it was switched in September 1996, but 6abc reverted back to the old 1990-91 version three days later, and they eventually change back to late 1994 rearranged version of the theme, which is better than the 1996 theme. WPVI currently using the December 1994 version of the theme in low tone since September 2002. WPVI-TV had recently switch to a new ABC O&O graphics on March 12, 2024, and it still retains the 1994 theme intact.
@@SigmaRho2922 You might feel that way but there is a bit of an unwritten rule at the station of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" and them pulling that move with MCTYW was a prime example of why this rule exists.
I wonder why they went back and forth from using the remaster version and the original version of MCTYW in the mid 90s. You can clearly see this with the remastered being used in the last clip with the 1990 era graphics, but right after it goes back to the original version with the newer 1995 graphics.
36:07 Ah yes, the late 1994 high tone theme... I don't know why they brought it back only for a few weeks on the 10am show... Personally, that version of the theme was the best.
Gabriel "Gabe" Kunda is the new voiceover for all Action News broadcasts. They have him replacing Charlie Van Dyke due to what appears to be his voice degrading over the years due to age, despite the fact that sister flagship O&O WABC still uses Van Dyke for their Eyewitness News openings.
I was going to say that would be good to have all the O&Os for each network done, especially here in Philly for WCAU and KYW pre- and post- "Big Switch" as the 30th Anniversary of that is next year.
Coincidentally, this video was uploaded on the 54th anniversary of the launch of Action News, which happened on April 6, 1970.

I like that WPVI still kept the traditional opener even though all of the ABC Owned Stations now use a centralized graphics package

Gabe Kunda
