It’s not so much about the Generic brands that he’s shocked about, Shane literally group up around generic brands! It’s the fact that these rich companies are putting the exact same expensive product in different styled box’s that are priced for less. It’s quite literally manipulation everytime u walk into a grocery store, he’s trying to talk about the fact that mostly everything in big named brand stores is a lie!
@@lolakozlowski9811oh but this isn’t a secret. Generic brands are just factories dealing with surplus. What’s wrong with paying more for the same product? This happens all the time lol People have PAID MORE FOR RECOGNIZABLE BRANDS since capitalism is a thing. The whole fashion industry is built on this. Do you really think that Supreme and Off-White clothing are sold at those prices because it’s high quality fabric? Even if it was high quality fabric, it wouldn’t be enough to justify the cost. So basically, this is a non-issue. Edit: Also, I forgot to say that not every generic brand has the same level of product of the name brand. Some are cheaper because only the packaging is changed but some are indeed lower quality products.
For the record, my dad buys the Milville and Great Value brand all the time, just as good as the name brands. He's smart and saves money, especially during this recession. LEAVE MY GIRL ALDI ALONE. they seriously do not understand that for students living abroad, aldi is the cheapest and best option to not spend 100 euros every week. they have ZERO grasp on reality. aldi is not a dollar store, it's a normal supermarket with cheaper options for people who can't afford luxury cashews.
Anyone who shops for themselves knows about this "theory conspiracy" it's called smart bargain shopping. To pay more is just supporting the brand but really, who has money to support a brand just because? It used to be back in the 50's-80's where people would support companies/remain loyal as companies USED to concider the buyers such as lowering the prices during a recession. Companies don't support the buyers anymore (like raising prices during Covid) so why would we be loyal to them? I buy that products that help me save.
Great comment!! It reminds me of Crisco Shorting and how so many Nanas swear by it and always used that brand even though I'm sure there were probably cheaper alternatives. People most definitely supported brands before and I totally agree with you, brands don't care about the customers like they used to.

To summarize Shane’s video: Shane realizes generic brands exist, his brain explodes because he can’t comprehend that poor people have to eat.. and we don’t eat Name Brand ™️ products ETA: I’m half way through now and am genuinely upset. My family and I have survived off of EBT for years now because of poverty, and even with that aid, we can’t afford name brand foods. To call it a scam is so ridiculous, and the fact that Shane claims so hard that was a super poor child and shit.. it just is infuriating. The people paying double for packaging, are the same people who don’t have to compare the prices of every option to find the cheapest food so that they can still pay rent and eat every month
Name brand isn't even better than store brand. It's just like fashion brands but on a smaller scale, you're paying for Kraft Mac and Cheese, not Mac and Cheese.
okay so, shane definitely knew generic brands EXIST. like obviously. but he didn’t know that most of them are THE SAME product completely. which does go to show his level of privilege, because he can afford to buy the more expensive product and not think about it. and also, companies don’t “offer a cheaper version so people can afford it” they offer a more expensive version and profit off the classism that capitalism is built off of. the cheaper version is *worse* the more expensive version is *better* that’s what they want you to believe. that’s what classist programming teaches us. it’s unconscious until we notice it, which shane never had to, because by the time he had to buy his own things, he was rich from youtube and never had to think about any of this. THATS why he’s shocked!! also, he’s not that shocked. he’s matching the reaction of his child audience finding this out. 👍🏻
I agree and I think some of us are forgetting that plenty of poor people (me, I’ve done this lol) do buy the name brand option of (insert fav snack) because they have been convinced that it tastes “better”. I think that aspect is what makes it so much worse, that there are plenty of people who can’t spend a lot on groceries but will up their grocery bill because they’ve been fed a lie to justify a product being more expensive. And idk sometimes it bothers me when people say “everyone who’s poor knows this” or that you “have to experience this sort of thing to understand it”. Which I agree with that to a degree. But there are plenty of people who live paycheck to paycheck who buy into this sort of scheme. My dad, for example, would buy great value products (primarily), but would never buy generic Oreos, cola, or chips. So even when you live paycheck to paycheck, you can go through life not knowing these things. But we definitely don’t need Shane Dawson to be the one to educate it in his milk toast way lol

the REAL reason you shouldn't buy groceries at the dollar store is because you can often find the same product for 85¢ at walmart or another cheap store in your area!! lol give some real advice shane.

As a 30 year old woman, I cant imagine being Shane's age and going through the process of filming and editing that whole video and thinking "yeah this will be great content." Its giving 10 year old who just discovered youtube vibes. Shane should just stay off the platform and live his life. The conspiracy theory is.. we are all tired of overhyped and overpriced brands so we get the exact same thing at a reasonable price point? Oh no, the common folk understanding what reasonable pricing is and spending their money wisely 😱
Haven’t we been hearing about how name brand medications (advil and Tylenol and stuff) are the same as like the store brand ones? What makes them think other products wouldn’t be the same?
Shane was this close 👌🏻to having a decent video idea, how "organic" is a scam but man he just went off the deep end on this one. I love how his point is "why are companies making cheaper alternatives for lower income people" and not "why are companies charging outrageous prices for things"
I agree I actually learned about how organic is a scam and they still use pesticide. It would have been cool if he had covered Netflix organic documentary and did research instead of this shi. Glad I unsubscribed and stop watching long ago
I kind of understand the shock because I didn’t realize it was the exact same products, I thought that each company had their own manufacturers. So while I’ve spent my whole life going with the cheaper things because we’ve grown up poor, I also grew up insanely sheltered and uneducated about the real world, so until now I thought that they were entirely different products not just labeling differences. Definitely not conspiracy theory, just misunderstanding of how things function, and I don’t understand the attitude he has towards it. This makes me happier: knowing there really isn’t a difference so I don’t have to feel that shame/guilt that those of us who grew up poor tend to feel about buying cheaper things. Win for us for sure.
Shane Dawson isn’t good for much, but after I told my mom about this video and showed her pieces of how laughably terrible the entire thing was, she laughed for like 15 min straight 🤪

He knows Chris likes bigger guys and he’s trying to get his attention. It’s like harassment at work and Chris seems uneasy with it. Ryland should be maaad at him and calling him out. It’s horrible how he blatantly flirts with Chris and puts down Ryland
Them being so bothered by the fact that cheap food doesn’t taste like total dog shit is so dystopian. I mean it's not much of a conspiracy theory but as somebody that does work at a grocery store. I have literally had arguments with customers telling me they could not possibly buy the store brand frozen vegetables. They only buy birds eye and guess. Who packages giants store brand vegetable. that's right bird's eye.
@@tarajones13 How do you expect people to find this out? Its not taught in schools and america is very very heavily pro-consumerism and brand names. It’s labeled as a different product, and advertising is put out to convince people that name brands are special and different. Truly, how many times have you heard a commercial say something along the lines of “our product outshines the leading ordinary brand”. Especially as a kid, I heard that shit all the time. My dad, living paycheck to paycheck, fell for that shit too. Because people forget that people who are hella hella low income are not typically educated on the tools used to take advantage of them! A lot of other poor people I’ve met do not know this, and a lot of poor people do pay the extra buck or two for the name brand… because advertising is an extremely divisive tool.
Some *actual information* that would have been easily available to Shane: Trader Joe's sources private label products with whomever they find has the best version of that product. They will have a contract with that provider if, and only if, that vendor can produce according to their standards.(i.e. - No high fructose corn syrup or meeting State of California standards for organic labeling, etc.) They use local and regional providers whenever possible. Guess what happens? Tj's often gets fired by the vendor if a product becomes popular and they demand too much of that vendor's capacity. Why? Because if a mango juice producer allows TJ's to take 80% of their product and TJ's ends up not renewing the contract: That company is likely to go out of business. Signed, My Spouse Has Worked for TJs since 2006
I don’t think that’s the case? Like, for instance Aldi brand Rice Krispies differ slightly from name brand (they’re gluten-free while name brand aren’t, which is why I know this). There’s not a legally required way to formulate most foods to my knowledge. Some things do have legal definitions (which is why you’ll sometimes see “chocolatey” instead of “chocolate” or “frozen dessert” instead of “ice cream”), but most ready-made foods…the recipe and ingredients are up to the brand, I think. I mean, as long as it’s legally food, I don’t think the government cares. I don’t even know how they’d enforce such a thing.
As someone who works for Doordash, yes, many places are named different things but come from literally the same food truck. And they're priced differently too. Its BIZZNIZZ yall. I did a whole research paper on white labeling a bit before shane released his video and it was EMBARASSING the way he acted about it... White labeling started with just finding a usage for leftover products and as well they sell it to the stores to make profit so the stores can give it their own branding. It's why you never see ads for great value products... its just the store brand of it 😭 Quality does differ though occasionally but for the msot part its the same and its just that it has different marketing. The entire point of it is advertising!! And him saying its a conspiracy is so annoying when he could've just framed it as a commentary on how capitalism and marketing works but NO he wont do that cuz the only reason why he even has a career is bc he uses the same tactic w/ his shitty makeup and other merch.. its just his branding slapped onto a product not made by him
What shanes video could have/ should have been is "You can still enjoy your favorite foods in this economy, off brand items are just as good as name brands, but they are cheaper because you aren't paying for the name on the package as well as the product." Could have been a down to earth reminder. But instead it was a poor shaming video. Gross.
As a person not well off, I’ve always had to try and find the cheapest things, the reason they do this is because otherwise we wouldn’t be able to afford it, I’m sure this is entitlement because I could tell the vibe from a mile off
His point was that he used to think that the actual product was made by a completely different company, so the generic brand is made with cheaper ingredients, he didn’t realize that the brand was the only thing he was paying for, he thought it was a different product completely

that’s such a break from who he was as a child. in his early days (childhood) he talked about how he was raised by his single mom, and how they were dirt poor. he used to say he’d never be changed by the money, and he would stay humble. it’s a shame. oh well.
- an ex shane fan (i had zero internet restrictions or monitoring at a very young age. i was his fan from 6-11, please don’t hate me. i didn’t know better back then)
It’s not so much about the Generic brands that he’s shocked about, Shane literally group up around generic brands!
This happens all the time lol
People have PAID MORE FOR RECOGNIZABLE BRANDS since capitalism is a thing.
@@Lucaz99Thank you
For the record, my dad buys the Milville and Great Value brand all the time, just as good as the name brands. He's smart and saves money, especially during this recession. For rich people to make fun of that, that's so tone-deaf. I can see why no one's watching this video. Not a conspiracy, but a fact, a fact me and a lot of us already knew. Epic fail for Shane
Hear me out….. I don’t think he’s making fun of people who buy the generic brands…he’s pointing how stupid it is to buy the name brand lol like I thought that was kinda obvious
@@anthany4719 i think he's actual point is exposing private labels which isn't a secret nor a conspiracy theory at all
they all buy from the same distributor, all of the delivery trucks pull out of the same place, just carrying different labels to the store. it's all the same & that's why we have billionaires, because there's a group of ppl who run it all
You can hate Shane all you want but it sounds like you didn't really watch it, but I learned a lot from that video and it is very useful information even if you don't like him. Even a broken clock is right twice a day
@@anthany4719exactly, I don't think they watched it , they just wanna complain about Shane. Which is fine, he sucks, but like at least admit you didn't watch it lmao
the chris randomly laughing like rent was due was the most entertaining thing about this video

all shane's video did for me was leave me bored and hungry
fr I'm half asleep like damn. i could go for some animal crackers rn
I'm sitting here thinking I just watched a 20 year old brit be hangry for 2h straight.
I'm not mad at it, but I _would_ be if I for some reason watched Shane's video alone.
Yeah, I don't get how a flood warning could be boring, but he did it.
Ryland acting excited in the beginning already killed the vibe. He was always the sassy cynical one and now that Shane doesn’t have his friends to add hype in the video Ryland has to and it’s not hitting as genuine at all 😂
I hate that he doesn't credit the small creators he takes clips from also.
that was a big thing with one of his ghost hunting videos a while ago, like 80% of it was clips of other peoples vids uncredited
I think it’s credited in the about section
He linked the videos in the description box
I need someone to tell me how much of Shane’s video is other people’s content extending the run time for him. It’s beyond ridiculous how much he just uses other creators videos because he can’t explain things himself
I’ve thought this for so long
He is literally ripping them off and not even a shout out during the video or an interview I hope they copyright claim him lmao
Finally someone with a valid critique of his stuff. People are going on and on about how they already knew everything in his video, which is a lie because it's not common knowledge and name brands wouldn't exist anymore if everyone knew. The real problem is his clip stealing and supplementing, I wish people would focus on that part more instead of refusing to admit they might have learned something from the conman.
@@asatanicmechanic I agree. Like I’ve always bought the generic store brands simply because I can’t afford it otherwise, but I genuinely thought the generic brand was manufactured to be its own separate thing. Maybe I’m just dumb
@@asatanicmechanicSorry but some people actually do research on the stuff they’re buying its not uncommon
the part where they called aldi dollar store horror triggered my fight or flight. LEAVE MY GIRL ALDI ALONE. they seriously do not understand that for students living abroad, aldi is the cheapest and best option to not spend 100 euros every week. they have ZERO grasp on reality. aldi is not a dollar store, it's a normal supermarket with cheaper options for people who can't afford luxury cashews.
why couldn’t shane just share a link to his video on his story, why did he have to humble himself so bad
Same with Amazon it’s cheeper to buy on there rather then in supermarkets I do what saves money
@@cinnamonbun1354Fr like don’t get me wrong, I hate billionaires like Bezos, but Amazon really can help you save on stuff, plus with prime you don’t pay shipping which is even better for my broke self 🥲
To summarize Shane’s video: Shane realizes generic brands exist, his brain explodes because he can’t comprehend that poor people have to eat.. and we don’t eat Name Brand ™️ products
ETA: I’m half way through now and am genuinely upset.
I'm so incredibly mortified that I grew up genuinely enjoying this man's content 😳😬..I'm embarrassed!
Me too.
Same I was in middle school watching this man make the grossest jokes, I wish I could go back and tell younger me to save themselves 💀
Like Adam said, “The conspiracy is that Shane was lying about being poor”
Also loving the new hair Adam!! 🥰💚
Like hes 40 years old and this is mind blowing to him?
Lol, he’s 34 I think. But yeah not exactly mind blowing content.
This man voted. Let that sink in
okay so, shane definitely knew generic brands EXIST. like obviously. but he didn’t know that most of them are THE SAME product completely. which does go to show his level of privilege, because he can afford to buy the more expensive product and not think about it. and also, companies don’t “offer a cheaper version so people can afford it” they offer a more expensive version and profit off the classism that capitalism is built off of. the cheaper version is *worse* the more expensive version is *better* that’s what they want you to believe. that’s what classist programming teaches us. it’s unconscious until we notice it, which shane never had to, because by the time he had to buy his own things, he was rich from youtube and never had to think about any of this.
You call him privileged but he was poor before this whole UA-cam thing.
@Girl What oh honey, you don’t get two mansions with youtube as your only source of income.

He’s changed the thumbnail and title like 4x already and even edited it a second time to make it shorter!! It’s now less than half an hour long
If Shane knew anything about marketing tactics, he’d use the part of Ryland feeding him while he was blindfolded as a thumbnail.
He has so many connections,he could actually learn about marketing/videos editing and how to make videos interesting. He just doesn't want to.

You mentioning they spent their whole day doing this just made me think of how Shane could spend that time taking a course in marketing, or editing, or writing, or...anything else
Exactly!
the REAL reason you shouldn't buy groceries at the dollar store is because you can often find the same product for 85¢ at walmart or another cheap store in your area!! lol give some real advice shane.
Lol Shane thinks he’s gunna find a new fan base if we share his videos?!

Also there’s so much fun stuff you can buy there and decor!
As a 30 year old woman, I cant imagine being Shane's age and going through the process of filming and editing that whole video and thinking "yeah this will be great content." Its giving 10 year old who just discovered youtube vibes. Shane should just stay off the platform and live his life. The desperation to try and stay relevant while playing up the whole "im vulnerable, love me" bit is literally his biggest downfall and that says a lot considering his past. Just... no, Shane. Go home. Lol
yes, it's pretty pathetic
The fact that Shane could have made a 1 minute tiktok and that would have had more impact

“No one will care about this except me.” -Shane Dawson, the man who made a video and got upset when no one cared
OMG I'm dying laughing! When Ryland asked "IS THE VIDEO CANCELLED? THAT SUCKED!" in the car, my world was turned upside down for a sec - because for a moment I thought Ryland had become self-aware enough to realize how tone-deaf this video is. And then, I started laughing even harder because, turns out, he just can't stand being wet in a parking lot. The carnival music intensifies!!

Bro why did Shane choose that unflattering thumbnail oh my god
To be fair, did he have a choice? No part of him is flattering. 😂
It’s taken me 3 days to watch this entire video cause I just can’t bare an hour of Shane being so insufferable in one go 😅 Adam, you must be exhausted 😂
I tried to watch his video simply because I like to see what he’s up to, but I literally couldn’t finish it. I was bored within the first 10 minutes
Honestly, I found Shane’s video boring and stoped almost half way
Shane Dawson isn’t good for much, but after I told my mom about this video and showed her pieces of how laughably terrible the entire thing was, she laughed for like 15 min straight 🤪
23:52 YOU CRACKED IT!!!! i watched jake doolittle's reaction stream and he said the same thing too. how does shane (who claims to be soooo poor) not know that named brands charge more for the same products?? literally everybody knows that lmfao
I legitimately don't understand how there are people who never knew this was a thing... You have to be COMPLETELY out of touch not to know this stuff.
Based on the "camera work" I'm surprised Chris wasn't already blindfolded at the 75% mark of the video 🙄
You spilled
Chris is there to be Shane’s lap dog. Shane is DYING for Chris to give compliments. Have you noticed he’s gained even more weight since hiring Chris? He knows Chris likes bigger guys and he’s trying to get his attention. It’s like harassment at work and Chris seems uneasy with it. Ryland should be maaad at him and calling him out. It’s horrible how he blatantly flirts with Chris and puts down Ryland
Them being so bothered by the fact that cheap food doesn’t taste like total dog shit is so dystopian.
Also, Shane saying milleville stole the Frosted Flakes name as if he wasn’t just talking about the fact that they’re from the same company. Like, my brother in Christ, how does a company steal a product name from its self?

I mean it's not much of a conspiracy theory but as somebody that does work at a grocery store. It baffles me that there are people who don’t know or believe this.
A lot of other poor people I’ve met do not know this, and a lot of poor people do pay the extra buck or two for the name brand… because advertising is an extremely divisive tool.
this would have done better as a dupe video than a conspiracy theory video
Some *actual information* that would have been easily available to Shane: Trader Joe's sources private label products with whomever they find has the best version of that product. They will have a contract with that provider if, and only if, that vendor can produce according to their standards.(i.e. - No high fructose corn syrup or meeting State of California standards for organic labeling, etc.)
They use local and regional providers whenever possible. Guess what happens? Tj's often gets fired by the vendor if a product becomes popular and they demand too much of that vendor's capacity. Why? Because if a mango juice producer allows TJ's to take 80% of their product and TJ's ends up not renewing the contract: That company is likely to go out of business.

I’ve always been under the impression that if a store has an “off brand” they’re legally required to have the same ingredients..from food to face wash
