Full breakdown of the Nets Switching Defense: halfcourthoops.substack.com/p/brooklyn-nets-switching-defense
That breakdown from cp3 is the most concise and articulate explanation for why switching defenses work so well at the highest level that I've seen. Great video as always!
@Deez Shut up
jacque vaughn gotta be in coach of the year conversations the way he was able to get this team to reach their potential when it seemed like they wouldn’t at the start of the season is impressive
And I don't think they reached their full potential yet.
Facts!
@@dreb5776 i dont think so either, Ben Simmons is slow cooking & he works for this team because they dont expect the unexpected from him. They know what he is capable of & thats what they want from him.
@@7truelife Exactly.. Seth is not 100% Joe is not 100% and I Think they still trying to Figure how to use player like Cam, Morris and possible Sharpe who I Feels is their best Defensive rebounder and can Shoot base on that Pacers match and a few min he got in other match, I feel that's the big body that nets have not been using.
Jacque Vaughn has really transformed the team from the hell hole that nash had them in, when u watch games with nash at the helm, there were really no principals, just a bunch of different things from drop coverage to switching just very confusing, but now Jacque has them playing a system. wish he could’ve been the coach since training camp, they would have a good chance of being number one in the league
Joe tsai wanted a basketball reason to get rid of Nash rather than seeming like he listens to KD. When they wen to 2-6, that was all Joe needed as he feared the pushback of “caving to Durant’s wishes” per se. He is an atrocious owner
@@talkinnets247 I think the basketball reason should’ve been the loss streak when Kd got hurt last season
Still have a good chance nets are number 2 seed
@@sleepingmedicine.x exactly they were last seed and kd had to come back and carry them back to the play in
@@sleepingmedicine.x they probably thought that was too late in the season to make a coaching change
This breakdown is something serious bro salute to you.
fr
Damn bro You outdid yourself. Very articulate and concise. Keep them coming.
Like Jack Vaughn said keep it simple... for a team like the Nets, this is a perfect defensive scheme for them.
That Jarrett Allen 3 had me dying 😂😂😂
Facts😭
At least he tries even if he sucks 🤷♂️
Yeah hope Ben could do that sometimes. At least try a bit.
Whats makes them able to switch is their length and agility. Ben, KD, and Clax are all long defenders.
Royce as well
@@jalynjones9136 and TJ and Watanabe
Good freaking breakdown I love it man 💯
This is a really great breakdown. Would love to see them try and grab an above average POA defender like an Alex Caruso or Delon Wright. At times they get burned by smaller quicker guards (Darius Garland for example in their game versus Cleveland) and that easy penetration into the paint can lead to kickouts to the perimeter to open shooters or touch fouls by the defense since everyone collapses into the paint. What I like about Wright and Caruso specifically is that they’re both bigger guards enabling them to guard bigger wing players, making them perfect in the Nets’ switching scheme.
Bruce brown ..but they didn't resign
They have that in Sumner albeit not as elite as those two, he just doesn't get that much mins
They just chose to limit Mitchell instead of Garland. If they had put Simmons on him it would've been a little different. Also Garland is too fast and shifty for anyone really to stay in front of him for 48mins.
@@shanthamoibrown9029 yeah Bruce Brown would have been perfect off the bench. I’m not sure why they didn’t offer him a contract.
@@MonsterPill Who cares about Bruce Brown that's old news. Embrace what we have now.
Awesome breakdown. I did notice it in all their games. It's the trust though that makes this team great right now. Everyone is held accountable.
Reason why Golden State added KD because in previous years that switching defense only Curry was able to cook 1 on 1…With KD they had mismatches all over and killed all switching defense including that 7 game series with Houston.
Underrated comment. When Livingston retired only Steph could reliably generate a bucket out of nothing. Sure they ran through the regular season no problem, but unfortunately, Steph is the Warrior most likely to get injured. Back then he was also the most likely to throw the ball away. KD gave then another reliable scorer off the bounce, ( and much more.)
@@chiggsytube facts…So it made teams have to decide to get killed 1 on 1 by KD or get killed by all the ball movement.
I’ve been a fan of the Nets for 10 years (ever since the move to Brooklyn) and this is the most fun I’ve had watching them play
And it’s hugely due to their defense this season
Thank you for spreading knowledge on this beautiful game
Great video. Dwight Howard length would certainly help them in the offensive respond department. You can mix up defensive styles depending on match ups.
Amazing video Coach, great to see the Nets establishing a solid defensive identity.
What a beautiful game. 5:24 has been a weakness. Nash is an awesome player but too many times Kyrie (given his size) would be guarding much larger players.
This time around we have more size as well. Last season Kyrie and patty would constantly get switched into JT and JB.
drummond too. drummond is a mismatch on those wings because he can't stay in front of them.
This time, let Ben Simmons lock either one of the *Celtics* stars like he stopped Giannis and Donovan Mitchell from scoring many points...
Well broken down bro. We fans always be talking trash about teams when they lost but not having any knowledge about the game and the strategies that goes on in the game.
Interesting to see how teams start to make adjustments on offense to combat this defensive philosophy.
Can’t wtf u gonna do ? They basically running Kyrie away from your primary players 😂 that’s the only person on the court they worrrid about getting picked on this shit is genius
Vaughn is coach of the year and it’s not close.
Nik is the centerpiece, a total disrupter on d and who has fantastic hands. He rarely fumbles passes, gets rid of the ball quickly and runs like a deer. His style and skills remind me, a little faintly, of the surreal Bill Russell. Remember Russell was 22 when he entered, Nik is still 23.
What’s amazing is how simple this is. It’s weird that most coaches can’t teach this. Plus most of defense is about being a little smart and communicating. It’s bugs me at time how bad some of these teams are at communicating on the floor.
Best clinic on defense I've ever seen on UA-cam. Thanks for your impeccable homework and analysis. Hope my Denver Nuggets watch this vid. If they can implement something similar to what Brooklyn's D is doing, Denver might have a chance at a Chip.
They have been using the switch defense since KD started playing in '21, they're probably better because they have better defensive players.
This isn’t new they’ve been doing switch defense in the KD/Kyrie era, the difference this season compared to last year they’re not starting 3 guard lineup where teams would just shoot over their small guards.
They used to switch everything even off ball screens and the communication wasn't great. But yeah having Simmons and Royce out there instead of Mills and Harris definitely helps a lot.
Jacque Vaughn is able to make the team focus on the defense he set up.
Yeah I’ve been saying that too. It lowky worked the first year because they had guys like Jeff green, blake, and landry shamet but they still weren’t the best because that roster wasn’t the tallest. This year they have length. That’s why it works.
This is that Mike Dantoni vibe, like you said. Which is ironic because 1. Nash was a long time collaborator with MDA but didn't use his methods. 2. MDA was an assistant for Nash's first season
this was an amazing analysis
Great breakdown, i get to appreciate the fast paced game of basketball more😌
Now I see why teams like Golden State Boston and now Nets are successful.
If you play switch defense on a team with great 3pt shooters they will make you pay
Think it's the other way around. You switch on those teams to negate their screens so they can't get a clean look at the rim.
That’s awesome man!! Great to see this breakdown showing how good they are recently!!
Jac has really sparked team. Happy for kyrie and team. I just want to see Simmons to be a force and prove everyone wrong
This is championship defense at its finest I love ❤️ it we finally look like a championship team if we can add another big-man or another wing defender it’s litt!
JV is a smart coach, simplfying the defence and getting everyone to buy in is not easy, especially in the middle of a season!
Steve Nash really was the worst coach
Man its sad that if they had an experience coach instead of nash the last 2 years, they wouldve won a championship.
He didn't even know how to Describe the Nets Culture.
Marks had to Bail him out on Media Day
😂😂😂😂 the worst part is the media lied and said KD and Kyrie picked him
@@zoan23456 they are 2021 champs if Vaugh is HC instead of Nash SMH hes a war criminal
I just discover this GREAT channel, wonderful job you got a new subscriber! Thank a lot for this quality job :)
Netsworld we are backkk
Brother I love your breakdown of the defensive set they run
Best breakdown I’ve seen on d nets defense. 👍🏾
Don't know much about basketball but this is interesting never heard of switching defense...kinda complicated.
Nice breakdowns about not only the play buy why and because of the strengthen or weakness of another player- so the Nets also have to know who they are playing against.
Best breakdown I've seen.
Great Analysis 👍👍👍
Great vid bro 💯
Great analysis
sheesh this needed to be broken down great video
great breakdown!
Great video, bro
Those are some pretty good graphics🥂🥂
love THIS CONTENT. SUBSCRIBED.
Cool analysis!
Nice video
Coach of the year
Great content.
The way that the Nets switch off on set screens up top and back picks has gotten them these wins...And also weak side help has been on point...Nic Claxton and Ben Simmons are playing great at their position and the way KD is guarding one on one is looking like that trio might cause a lot of problems in the East... Rebounding has been better and the way they are boxing out more is being the big difference on why the rebounding margin isn't as bad as it was early on...Great breakdown on the Nets defense...I know a lot of Nets haters are hoping for a drop off on this team
when i see systems like this implemented early-mid season, i always wonder how that couch will counter the eventual counter. Because teams are gonna adjust by playoffs. So then how does a coach account for that?
Great job bro I wish we had Vaughn as coach for the knicks
JV for COTY
Some sort of dibble hand off offensive may be able beat defensive switching but I won’t say anything else because I’m a New Yorker and I root for my home teams by default lol.... Let’s Go Knicks and Nets. 🏀
This video is incredible
Its call coaching, give Coach Vaughn the respect he's due
It's perfect because Ky gives up on defense a lot mostly because he's small, a little prone to injury and early on offense but, all there bigs can guard 1-5
and other nets fans want to add a big man. lol! that will mess up the system.
Very good vid
How do you get the full game footage to download? Thanks
all that IQ on the floor translating into good defensive recognition finally
Great stuff
every team knows how fast their team is . and most teams are faster than the Nets
If they added another big that's not as fast on his feet like Clax, Ben or KD... It would mess up the hole switching defense cause he would be late to respond and the other team would drive to the rim and shoot a pull up jumper closer to the basket, Or even drive right through the defense and dish it out to the open man on the 3point line...
how do you find these clips to download? thanks.
If the team is committed to the 3pt, then the weakest link has to take it. A simple response to the current obsession with analytics.
Yuta working his way to 15 a year 😂
Gotta attack that perimeter or low post mismatch quick when you have it. And catch Kyrie sleeping in that weakest link switch by back/down/flare screening him or player movement. And gotta make it hard on Kyrie and kd when they play with claxton and Simmons on the court at the same time. Try your hardest to make kd and Kyrie feel like they're playing 2 on 5.
Good share
The iq of the players doing this switch defensive scheme is impressive
in that jalen johnson clip it annoys me how guys don’t use that window to sneak cut behind the defense. the short roll would the. touch pass or lob it in with kyrie scrambling as a much smaller defender.
draymond and iggy used to destroy teams with that rather then just sit in the corner.
This should be the content we were getting in espn but instead we were getting dramas and nonsense.
I wonder how Steve Nash feels when he sees the Nets now 😂
Nash should have seen this Video!! LOL
Can we get a sixers vid?
They dropped the trash, in this case, Nash.
Had Marks been Fired too, Bk would be #1 in the association.
Marks got good role players. Nash never played them in the playoffs . Ran 8 guys , wore them out & wondered " Why are they Getting Hurt ?
@@itschance1 KD called for his job for a reason. He's scum who's received privilege due to his complexion. He was pure trash in the association.
u have to switch if Kyrie on the floor his defense is torid bad
they wouldve have won a championship already if nash wasnt the coach for the last 2 years.
T R U E
They had more talent in prior years and STILL BLEW it!! They were up 3-1 on Milwaukee, Got Swept by Boston . And the Celts were thew underdogs in that series
So the point is split the gap, gotta do that kyrie split between two defenders shit.
Wow, theyre finally learning something little kids learn playing on the playground in 4th grade
toronto raptor should play d like that with there team
having ben simmons , kd , claxton , and royce o neal on the defensive end is good because they all got good d
Finally nets ,they already have a defense.
5:16 so basically that copying the warriors defense
The Nets are Fools' Gold. At any point and definitely in the playoffs Hack-a-Claxton or Hack-a-Ben will become a thing. This will frustrate KD/Kyrie who will stand there helpless on offense while watching Ben/Clax brick FTs (Ben Simmons hasn't made a FT in over a month). Claxton/Ben will be forced to the bench which will compromise their D. For some reason, unbeknownst to me, Nate McMillan and JB Bickerstaff recently just let Simmons/Claxton play without fouling them. Letting highly efficient offensive players like Kyrie/KD cook, or Watanabe, Curry, Harris, Mills, Warren shoot is mind-numbingly dumb. Those two close losses are on the Head Coaches in my opinion. The Nets will continue to WIN, if they are allowed to play Claxton/Simmons sizeable minutes without them shooting FTs when on the floor
Nash isn't a coach, that was the problem. All it took was a little structure and leadership
TRUE
That's 2020 Lakers defense when they go small ball
Switch everything and go for no steals or anything keep them in front of you
i have been saying this for years...CENTERS getting caught in pick and rolls is just a bad way to defend...the other players have to switch..this is common in EUROPE since the early 00s.
Thunder were 1st ones to do it. 2016 vs curry.
00:08 thats a foul...
if that's a foul then you're soft. If you show the ball that much as you're driving in, then the defender has a right to grab the ball. Hit the weight room
@@dadnonlyd3 bro he grabs his hand lmao
@@Bungus_bill that is a jump ball stupid. Claxton made no contact and tried to take the ball away.
@@aneeshanand9621 watch it again he grabbed his wrist and then the ball with his other hand
The league has to make up for all the fouls they don't call for the Nets I guess.
Now i know why Nets continue to win..its not all about offense it all about teamwork..offense and deffence..its good to them plays like this..g
Good job for the new coach og nets.
Very new way to run switching defenses basically shows all the positives of the switch and minimizes the weaknesses of switching
The next coming of thinking basketball
Wait until the playoffs when teams figure you out!!! Idk why teams just double team kyrie and KD and make somebody else beat u
RIP
All of this is because nobody cares about posting up.
Some teams try, nets just have good 1v1 defenders against the post
Its not efficient. The highest number of turnovers comes when u try to give the ball to the post.. then if u help and recover its very difficult to find the right read from there.
@@ballaboveall905 it is of you have a pg guarding a PF/C. Or sometimes when a big is on a guard.
It's a lost art.
@@mattmann06 I explained to u why..its because since the pick and roll was invented they realized it is much more efficient. Look at the numbers.
