This looks great. I use the first version of the small rig matte box and the issue I have with that is its a bit bulky even though it’s lightweight and you couldn’t use circular filters. This one looks less bulky and will be easier to travel with.
Oh, Super news, been looking to buy a matte box, but due to various obstacles using my filters with it I have not. This is exactly what I need. Thanks for the video, will have to order one asap. Super excited.
Can you stack circular filters, how would you go about doing this. My lens has a 72mm filter thread, I have to step up from 72mm-95mm to attach the box, I think that’s correct. Would I then have to step down to screw on my 82mm thread filters on the front?
Thanks for the video. I love SmallRig. The underside of the Top Flag looks a little reflective - would this present an issue of reflected light entering into the lens?
Thank you for a great review! There are two things I wonder about: How wide can you get before the matte box is visible, did you try on anything wider than 24mm, how about 16-35mm? Also am I right assuming this is not attachable to a lens that you can’t screw a filter to, for example the 12-24mm?
Can you help me out? Got 2 67 thread tamron lenses with a 72 step up ring for all my filters. Does this work and how would I install this im insanely confused
@@DavidOastler So you'd need step up rings from the smaller lens to the 72mm attachment of the matte box, then the circular ND would go into the 72mm attachment? Thanks for the review! You saved me from buying the old version.
Hi David, excellent video answering many questions. I shoot landscapes vertically then stitch into panoramas, wondering if the lid can be moved from one side to the other or can the matte box be easily turned around with the lid on the suns side. Cheers, Craig
My most lenses are 49mm thread & my filters are 52mm I usually use my filters adding a bronze 49-52 step up ring , my question is can put this 52mm adapter on my step-up ring and add mattebox on it ?
I'm so glad I pre-ordered this instead of going with smallrig's current gianormous cenema matte box. Especially since MFT is my platform (two G9s). I feel that a HUGE plus with this matte box system is that the filter mount allows you to add those circular filters where as the equivilent product from Tilta does not allow you to do that. You are instead forced to buy those astronomically expensive 4x6.65 filters. I just priced them and they are between AU$400 and AU$600 each!!!! Holy shit I can NOT afford that right now. They must be made from diamond slabs forged millions of years ago by alien civilizations. Nice review.
Hey David! 👋 hope you're well. hmm. interesting product ! How much weight can a filter thread of (mostly) plastic sony lenses hold though ? 🤷♂️ before you answer (lol) here's what happened to me: I had my 28mm f2 sitting on the TV table (not very high at all...u know the low and long ones ?) I had a step up ring and a filter on there. and one of the cats knocked it on to the carpet . broke the front plastic clean off !! I had to superglue the front disc of plastic back on. so now I'm very very weary of putting too much on the filter..I mean.. I know it was dropped... but... geez... wasn't far!!
Great review David. Just waiting for my mini mate box to arrive (5 week waiting list - gulp!!). Mini defo better size than the smallrig matte box which is simply too big for my BMPCC 6K Pro.
I just bought a Smallrig Mini Matte box but I can't put my variable ND filter in it... There is no thread into the mattebox. Although I read here that others can screw the ND filter on it. How is that possible?
Hello mate! Do you think that's possible to use my K&F Concept ND+CPL 82mm filter on it? I'm asking because this filter has two kind of knobs for change ND/CPL intensity, and I'm worried if the knobs would be stucked somewhere.. it's similar to the TIlta but the Tilta had an issue with 82mm ND and didn't fit. It would great if you could test out a 82mm variable ND! thanks again mate!
First time l seen a photography product made from carbon fiber and about time as camera equipment needs to be lightweight. Is it because of the expense? Possibly but l think it more they just slow to get into modern product.

Yes it is great to use.
Very helpful and thorough!

Best mattebox video ive seen. 👌🏻

I should have waited. Just got their regular smallRIG matte box
Same I’m finna return mine😂
Hello! At 06:35 I can't tell which latch you pulled to remove the filter tray. Is it the latch on your left or right hand?
Finally!! Thanks for this video.
Thanks
That's why smallrig lightweight went on sale good thing I didn't pull the trigger last week. Ordering this right now
You will love it.
Thanks for the video. I love SmallRig.
The underside of the Top Flag looks a little reflective - would this present an issue of reflected light entering into the lens?
I’ve not had a problem
damn....i already ordered the tilta mini matte box. this smallrig is perfect for me.
same here, but I ordered this mini just now and I want to sell my stupid Tilta...
Tilta’s Mini Matte Box has been out for a little bit… this looks exactly the same as the Tilta product.
I use 46mm circle filters, how can i get matte box to work with it?
Thank you for a great review! There are two things I wonder about: How wide can you get before the matte box is visible, did you try on anything wider than 24mm, how about 16-35mm? Also am I right assuming this is not attachable to a lens that you can’t screw a filter to, for example the 12-24mm?
Yes it needs a screw on filter thread.
@@DavidOastler Thank you! 👍🏻
Just loved the fact that we can use rounded filters, with the Tilta one this is not possible. Thank you for this video!
Thanks
Even though I have upgraded to a different matte box, I’m almost positive that the Tilta Matte Box has a provision to use circular filters…

it should work using a step ring?

From memory it can be turned.

Thanks yes it is a great product
Same question as @BK brooklyn : can you use 82mm VND's with it? Tilta was too small for it.
Yes it works fine just tested it with the 135mm gm and variable nd
@@DavidOastler Thanks
Tilta's matte box is too small for 82 mm filters really ?
@@laurenthenry Yes, 100% confirmed. At least for Variable ND's that generally have an outer diameter higher than 82mm

@@DavidOastler worth snapping the front of the lens off for a portrait ? 😲😬
I’ll just be careful lol
Can I use this on 35 and 50mm lenses and on 35 and 50mm cine lenses and 18-55mm lenses ?
I’m not sure as I don’t have them
How hard was it to get the filter holder to slide out?
Once I worked it out it was easy

looks great , a rival for the neewer one the came out last year
8:10 How does using this matte box compare with using a lens hood?
The matte box is much better due to the large hood and you can also control the nds as well

But why is it perfect for mirrorless cameras?
