my bassist accidentally wrote a riff in 9/8. i had him repeat it a dozen times to make sure it wasn’t a fluke. that he could get it right every time. then i explained to him and the guitarist that they have to count to 9 to get the tonight right. i was so scared that they wouldn’t be able to play the song anymore after they understood it. but they managed. i tried to have them play something in 6/8, but they couldn’t hang. it has to be 4/4, unless they write it.
@@yesnickcartereven tho its 11 months later, I completely understand them, i play drums and guitar, time signatures always get me confused, but then i just feel it out and it works out, if i over think it i cant play it, i can play this song start to finish on drums playing with a backing track, but the second i start to count the bars in my head i get lost it’s entirely feel
You know you have that "home" or "tonic" note in a scale that you always comeback - or in other words - resolve to? That's exactly what they doing with time signatures. They take you to odd, dissonant places and then take you back home to those 4/4, 6/8 measures. It's genius.
It really says a lot about the quality of their compositions, that you don't notice the weirdness of the counts when you just listen. There's very literal jarring or weird. It all flows well, but then you try to count and you're surprised at your confusion.
Man, this video was posted 2 days after the day I was born, and today I'm here. I really admire dream theater, and without a doubt they are one of my favorite bands, I really like the complexity of their music.
this along with the clip of Herman Lee demonstrating his crazy videogame sound effects have a touch of the Spinal Tap about them but i love both clips so much
Portnoy himself wrote that with the band. He himself says it wasn't easy to record that. He himself needed a special chart only for the time signature changes to memorize everything. Who are other normal human beings to say this is an easy song :D ?
Whats up with the beef between Tool and DT fans? I just watched a drumeo vid where Portnoy learns Pneuma by Tool and there in the comments there are also some dipshits going A >B, B>A. I personally don't like DT and love older Tool, why bitch about it?
Hm, he's doing it in so complicated way (you can hear when he start to simplify the counting around the 5th line of time signatures). I wonder how Jordan Rudess counts the same thing.....?!?!
I find it much easier to divide the song into parts that have a challenging transition, practice and memorize them and then the whole together. This one is way to distracting to me, if you have to count every measure. Just my opinion.
Same. Listening to the music and accessing the measures from there is much more organic. While there clearly is a mathematical structure to music, the essential side is on the proper feeling.
I've been playing DoE on guitar now for a couple of years, I have no idea what the time signatures are. I practiced in parts as you said and just pieces them all together Idk how it would work with drumming

Finally! Lyrics to Dance of Eternity
my man! love this comment :D

It's love song without words - the only in the world. "love is the dance of eternity"©Metropolis pt.1
Mike Portnoy - we are counting on you, but you are counting on your own! I've bought chineese York™ garden lever drumstick and lazy wait while no sleeping ends when it becomes old York™, Robert Plant approve this decision. I also watched for new amsterdam cheese drum session of Kit Diptych of jazz. Old name of New York. First time i listened to dance of eternity i thought it is jazz-rock of some kind, but it's "regressive progressive". Thanks for videos. "Easy does it!", not Rage - says other Mike!
James should do this on stage😂
I realized that is really song about love.
Mad respect to the guy who programmed the metronome
thanks
@@cosmicparsec9463 you didn't do shit
@@cosmicparsec9463friend you are not the one who programmed this 😐
It’s not hard lol

-How many time signatures do you want?
-DT: yes
😂😂
🤣👌
After a certain point you just have to admit the whole song's done in 1/1
If Mike portnoy is saying that 'it was not easy' than it means for me this song is the final boss of a game.
i can beat the final boss of a game......i cannot play this song. have you seen(not even heard, just seen) myung's solo.....
if i had eternity i could not learn this dance
He even got lost for a moment: 1:55

is it available for frets on fire?
it's the far superior game

panick
Well then youre covered because they have a song called panic attack and its madness too lol
@@matthewgarcia3032 pretty sure that's what they're referencing.
@@matthewgarcia3032 Damn. He should have made a joke about that
I think I need more of time signature, it just never enough.
That's how the musicians hide their phone numbers in their pieces
Nice joke 😂
this sure is a nightmare to remember
Underrated comment
you beat me to it by a year. I guess that was distance over time
I get it
Amazing pun! xD
I love that they unabashedly called the last section "Rush Cadence"
When the song is so complex that Mike Portnoy has difficulty counting to 6, you know you’re witnessing ceiling-shattering difficulty!
Meanwhile, my bassist stares at me when the bridge I composed contains a single 2/4

Literally leaving Home, cause thats the track before Dance of Eternity
Great comment ! Nice analysis
I love the moments where he laughs, as if he's acknowledging how bonkers this all is.
I feel sorry for the guy who programmed that click track
They did it themselves...
Man, even the time signatures can feel like a journey from opening, conflict to resolution.
I come back to this once in a while just to hear Portnoy give up counting and go to "dududu" 😂
His brain must have locked up and reverted to “Baby Shark” lyrics.😂

Marillion do that as well now and then. Easter is a lovely ballad and... did you notice the outro section is in 5/4?
