Adding A Water Spigot To A Blue Drum

- I have a few projects coming up where I need to have a source of water. However where I will be there is no water available so I need to have a portable source. I found this kit on amazon to add a spigot to a plastic 55 gallon drum and I think it is just what we need. It is made pretty poorly but I think it will do the job.
-Enjoy!

I imagine you can find these drums on Craigslist or Facebook market place 🤷🏽♀
Or nuclear waste drums may be substituted if the blue drums are not available.
I'm adding a barrel like this for my showers, one gal at a time. I'm also adding a camp shower and a compost toilet. Not all in the same location... 🙂
Used Coca Cola drums.
my dad used to work at Cargill and they would get rid of these blue barrels and we had tons of them in the 80s and 90s lol
I love that sixty one thousand.of us watched you drill a hole and screw in a tap. Just hangin out in the shop.
Translation from install manual, “thread assembly loose maybe, use much tape for most happy sealing”.
Exactly lol

This statement also applies to ALL furniture in a box. If you've ever tried putting that crap together, you know what I'm talking about.
@@Mr.Z1776 I bought some cheap cabinets at Ikea which went together and held up suprisingly well :)
@Paul1958R Me too. The directions are terrible though. As long as you find, fix and reinforce it as you're putting it together, they'll hold up decent.

Just wanted to thank you for the trick of getting the bulkhead fitting into position using steel wire and a magnet. It's one of those really clever things that seem obvious once you see somebody do it, but I never would have thought of it a million years. Beats the heck out of what I had been doing. I'm adding another couple of water barrels to my yard this week, and I'm going to copy what you did.
About 10 years ago, I use to primitive camp during hunting season, far, far, FAR back in the woods at a campground. You had to bring in water, a sewage dump tank, and a generator to recharge your batteries. I'd put 4 of those 55 gallon drums in the bed of my truck on their side with that bung and a faucet screwed directly into it, and I'd use a 12 rv water pump to pull out the water when the rv needed refilled. I stayed a month at a time, only leaving for food and clothes washing. (26ft KZ Sportsman 258TB). Those fine thread bungs usually are pipe thread and a simple faucet would crew right in that center hole. At least, mine did. Old drums I got were former food coloring from a local plant, so washing them well for potable water was good. But, just to be sure, I had a reverse osmosis filter system in the rv already, so I could fill from a local creek. Ah, the days I had using those old blue drums. They ARE thick walled. Never busted one, even on those bumpy roads that never got scraped after logging made them a mess. My 04 Z71 loved those 4 drums filled and the rv tongue weight...lol. 8 miles of dirt and mud and rocks protruding up with all that weight and 900 pounds of tongue weight on my weight distribution hitch. Fun trip with 4 full drums and that tongue. Probably far more than the truck was rated for. But, it was, as Eric says, "Chevy THUNDER", except it was GMC, and they're, Professional Grade. LOL. ANYWAY, saw your drum and it brought back those memories. Memories is all we got when you're old...LOL. Take care, Mrs O and don't let Eric get away with anything.
I'm sorry did you say you went *hunting* for a month but had to leave for washing and clothes and *food?* Was the hunting not very productive?
@@josephking6515Yeah, it wasn't so successful. But, it was alone time with myself and God in nature. And the wife got her time to clean the house and shop and all the other things I don't like doing...lol. I had to make sure I didn't stink, though. And there's only so much food you can carry along when you're already overloaded by a few thousand pounds. 5.3L Z71 is only rated for 1500 pounds in the bed, and 7200 pounds towing. And I'm carrying 1800 plus in the bed of just water drums, plus the 900 plus pounds of tongue weight, and I have no idea how much that pallet jack battery weighed but it was 4 cells of 3 volts, and was 4 feet wide, 2 feet tall, and 16 inches deep sitting on the tongue of the rv. Plus 4-30 pound LP tanks, 2-20 pound tanks, and 1-40 pound tank in the bed, too. Not to mention the 6,000 pounds of rv, and a 5x8 utility trailer I pulled behind the travel trailer on a hitch I had installed that's filled with a 3500 watt generator, and as much firewood as I could fit on it (est. 3,000 pounds there). I had to use an infrared heater for heat in the rv since the main built in units burn LP gas at only about 40% efficiency, and they pull 12v power off the batteries. I came prepared. I usually had a couple youth boys who'd come join me on hunts so I could teach them how. And they'd stay a night or two, so feeding a teenager, much less 2 bottomless pits...need I say more? LOL (btw...they measured me from front bumper to rear ramp on the utility trailer at just over 65 feet and a few inches long. I'm WAY overloaded. Cost me 2 transmissions but, hey, I had fun, and would put as much as 1,500 miles on that truck without touching a paved road during those times.)
When I was training for my Concretesolderingwelder license, there was a whole module on the proper use of Teflon tape...so I approve of this application!!!
Besides the direction of the wrap, so it doesn't unwrap when tightening, what other rules are there to make it a "proper" application? 🤔
@dans_Learning_Curve its a sarcastic reply trolling the triggered folks. 🙄
Also don’t go beyond the end of the threads so that some might block or shred off into the flow. Seems obvious but isn’t.
Good evening from Wyoming County! have 6 of these rain barrels at our house. Wife plants 150 Dahlia bulbs each year ( yup retired mechanic, go figure). I thread a regular 1/2 0r 3/4 ball valve spigot in the plastic. They a re thick enough to tighten and seal with a little sealant on the threads. Been using them for a least 5 years. Use an electric transfer pump on a hose to water plants. The barrels are filled by the house and garage gutters.
Remember Eric O, like Watch Wes Work says every sub par equipment installation is only temporary unless it works, at which point it’s fully OEM grade of course.
It is awfully nice of them to include a water ballon filler attachment 😂
I'm glad you clarified about the Astroglide substitution; that's stuff expensive.
I love my rain barrels..running water most of the year. I put my spigot up a little higher so big debris settles to the bottom.
That was pretty slick using the wire to get the other side in there. I was wondering how the heck you were gonna pull that off!😂 Wow, that was an extremely Chinese spigot. There are varying degrees of Chinesium, and that one was extreme! 🤣 As long as it works, it’s GOOOOD! 😁

Definitely the ending "If I can do it, you can too!" would fit this video!!
I think the very inner part of the bung can be drilled out so you can put a tyre (tire) valve stem in there so you can pressurise (pressurize) the drum. Helps to push out the highly viscous liquids like diff oil or as in my experience 52 years ago working in a garage after school a detergent we sold. It was especially thick during the winter months and needed quite a few psi to help it to vacate the drum.
Great idea. Did something similar to rig up a portable tank for water to supply a pressure washer at motocross races when my son was racing. Had a deep cycle 12 V battery and a cheap RV water supply pump to keep the pressure washer primed. In retrospect I would have preferred the barrel to the square plastic tank I got from Tractor Supply. Oh, and I also used Teflon tape. Lots and lots and lots of it.
Bought larger plastic tank fittings from Zoro. Very high quality, US made. You get what you pay for. Frequent Zoro customer.
When I made rain barrels I just drilled and tapped them with pipe threads. The plastic is thick enough to tap it. Never had any issues. No fishing the nut in.
Drilled a smaller hole, heated the barrel and screwed the faucet right in. Plastic melted back in around the threads. We used them for powerwashing motorcycles.
I used a 1/2" boiler drain valve from a big box store and used a 1/2" pipe tap to thread the side of the barrel. My barrel was thickest {about 1/4"} at the seam for maximum threadage. Didn't even need the teflon tape. Mine like yours is off the bottom. Now I have to connect it to my downspout..... FYI. Northern Tool has a level gauge that screws into one of those bungs. Nice job!
In Eastern Europe we were happy to find these ”american barrels” on local market sites and used to store wine in them... Similar technique with the ball valve. And what was interesting - these used barells were more expensive that brand new local ones ))
I put my barrel on top of a stand so the hose can connect at the bottom. It also works just sitting on a couple 2-by’s on the back of the truck to water plants, but mostly I use a pump for irrigating from the truck bed and get the job done faster.
In days gone by before teflon tap it was hemp string and red oxide paint or red sealent a messy job but in most cases done the trick. Greetings from Scotland to both of you.
Mate…I think the mode of teflon tape application was the least of your potential problems with that job😁. Well done making it work at all.
Those Amazon Starters and Alternators are definitely much better quality!
We have 3 barrels here at the house, and just got a couple spigots from home depot, with some threaded pvc unions. lucky my arms are long enough to thread those on 3 inches from the bottom. 1 good rain storm and we have 165 gallons of water for the gardens.
As Steve Lav would say, nothing but quality here!
it aint easy bein cheesy!
It’s quality….poor quality…but it works✔️
Steve Lav, the legend, and Ms Molly
Good enough for this neighborhood!
I know about the teflon tape trigger people go nuts when i use it on natural op lp gas lines.
You can get plastic bulkhead fittings from tractor supply that have pipe threads on the inside. The threads that tighten on the tank are left thread so that as you tighten the spigot it won't loosen on the tank. They do require a larger hole than what that device required though.
That's pretty genius. I woudn't have thought of doing that.
Hey if putting a hole in the side of the barrel makes me next level..... I'll take it 😂
@@dav1dsm1th ha - I mean using the wire to fish the fitting down to the bottom of the barrel when you can't get your arm in!
Another great video!!
Did you just go Beavis & Butthead on us Eric? 😂 TP for my bunghole!!
I am Cornholio!
I bought the PVC parts at my local big box store for my water collection barrel.
I did my rain barrel drain with a wire the same way, but I did not use a filter because I just water plants with it.
I used the same drum as yours.
You should be able to get bulkhead fittings and hose bibs from your local commercial plumbing supply house, more expensive of course but won't leak.
You did it Wrong!!!! lol Great work and Great Videos as usual man, Keep them comming!!!
I made a rain barrel like this and just used a npt threaded boiler drain right into the plastic. It doesnt quite screw in as tight as youd want and has a slight weep but not enough to drain the barrel. It lives outside so its a non issue. much easier install than fishing the inside parts in the barrel
I have a similar barrell and just used an old spigot and screwed it into the plastic and it never leaked. My top is open so I can dip a bucket into it. It does become a breeding ground for mosquitos but nothing is perfect.
If it is non potable water, you could put a couple drops of dish-washing liquid in it, to break the surface tension. They sink along with the eggs, I also use in standing water that I cannot get to.

Maybe try a spigot from a brewery supply(home brew). I have had good luck with 5 and 7 gallon buckets.....10-15 dollars. Can't wait to see what you are building!
Brother's a bung reamer from way back.😄
Your a brave man!
The caps on top have the threads for the cut off. If you have room lay the drum down most drums have two types of thread on the two inch cap
I really enjoyed this, thank you
While you make sure you got your warshers on the spigot you wanna make sure you got the washers on it as well!
truly entertaining watch this you are so awsome

Thanks for the video Eric.
Is that a legal drum modification in the PRNY?😂
Nothing is legal in NY lol
Think your fine as long you don't try to buy a xl pop.@@TheRealEricO
This video needs to be retitled Eric O scrapes the bottom of the barrel 😂
It's only legal in the PRNY if you use the finest chinesium Amazon has to offer.....😂
It's legal if it has an annual inspection sticker prominently displayed no more than 3 inches from the top and the PRNY gets their $50
Can you put a bit of plastic hose line on the INSIDE (friction fit it in the fitting) so it siphons from the bottom of the barrel? As long as you also have a line dropping from the spigot side the siphon should work and allow you to get most of the remaining water.
Yep I seen about 100 (20 or so ) RockAuto Magnets on those cabinet doors. I’m gonna start arranging mine by year of the vehicle on the magnet.
Where we at on the racks for the quad?
Those are cheapo but works as designed. I water our garden with one 2 years in no failure yer. Stay safe, and God bless
ATTACH a tyre valve through the top so you can pressurise the water if needed ❤❤❤😊
Not to be used in place of Astro glide,,,I just fuckin' choked on my bacon and eggs LMFAO
Does Dorman make spigots now?
I have had one in my blue drum for years. I use it to drain it after testing my outboard engine.
You could use a 90* elbows on the inside and plum it to the lower part of the the barrel to be able to get a complete draining of water
If Dorman made a hose faucet this would be it.
I bought some Chinese A/C gauges from Harbor Freight, and wanted to modify them. I went down to the old hardware store and found out that they used some thread pitch and style that doesn't exist in the western world.
Why, pray tell Eric, what is the correct use of astro glide????????
That looseness is called Triple-T... Teflon Tape Tolerance
I've never seen -20F windshield washer before . Up in the frozen hell of northern Canada where I am it's all -45F or " Summer " .
Eric, having it higher serves as an additional filter, keeping the screen from getting clogged. Prediction, you will be doing it again in months. There is good reason China doesn't have indoor plumbing in many areas of the country.
Put it in a flat spot and put a 90deg pick up on inside?
I was waiting for Eric to have to break out the JB weld.
buy cheap get cheap:) should have went to your local hardware store. for maybe a better quality parts. fun video
Yeah I know but it's so tempting when you're sitting home after work thinking about things you have to do and you can whip out your phone and just push the go button. It's a super terrible habit I know 🤷♂️
@@TheRealEricOi agree. i have gotten some cheaper amazon tools because i know i wont use them very often. it is nice to have a tool for the job at hand. i look forward to seeing your videos.
Is that the new Icon smoke machine I see on the shelf? I have seen them in the store, is it any good?
Actually it is way better than I thought it would be.
When did GM start making valves for rain barrels
How are you going to clean your filter? just asking
Blow nozzle 🤷♂️
Does the drum have to be blue?? What about one of the opaque ones that most carwash chemicals come in??
Meanwhile I lay my drums on their sides and screw in a bung hole spigot takes a few seconds and I don't ruin the barrels
Yeah, like I mentioned in the video the way I need to move these is upright so this is what I chose. But the bung method works also, especially if you need to use the drums for something else.
"Hey, it's that guy"
I feel that one. I own an auto shop. I get it 100%
The bung is pipe threads. 😊
Watering food plots?
Had the same issue with bulkhead and other plumbing fittings from the Amazon Chinese junk. They claim that they’re NPT but they are what is called NPS every time. Very common in china I presume to use NPS which is straight thread and they use a rubber washer to seal it.
😂 the 2 finger snugga dugga..😂
Put a tire inflator stem in there somewhere and put ten or fifteen psi of air and have good water pressure anywhere.

Just found the after hours channel, had no idea you and Mrs. O had a house, figured you all just slept in the shop.😊One question, have you ever driven by somebody’s house, saw them outside, and beeped your horn knowing full well that he is muttering “Hey!! There’s that guy! as you drive away?
How in the world would you get the filter on the inside off the barrel to change it when it gets clogged with debris unless you backflush it.
I would have put the filter on the OUTSIDE of the barrel.
Just my opinion.
Opinions may vary😊
You wouldn’t be able to put the valve on the outside if you put the filter on the outside.
Since the bung isn’t on the bottom if you’ve got enough debris in the tank to plug up the filter then it’s time to just replace the barrel since it’s got a bunch of debris in the bottom.
Ok, how did you get a Boeing part, Eric? Those are specifically for Boeing Only special order from their CEO Killer Calhoun.

I never would have thought of that! 😀
Your tape application was perfect. But, the barrel is blue so you should have used blue teflon tape! Now the teflon tape experts can have a debate. Haha Remember, if you can keep making videos, we can keep watching them.
now imagine the comments if he used yellow tape...
@@0oJoe I believe the yellow teflon tape is only for urinals! 🤣
That spigot looks like something off Temu 😂😂
$0.99 for 26 of them
I found that if you put kerosene in a barrel and try using the rubber washers to seal the connection even a premade one the rubber expands from the kerosene and pops the washers out which makes a bit of a leak LOL
I feel like if you could figure out a way to shrink heat shrink butt connectors with the welder you would do it just to trigger people and I think it’s great.
Plumbers tape and the clearance makes sense.
My 40 gallon water tank I bought the other day has a 3/4 female threaded so I put a spigot there and another in the 1/2 in id female one
Amazon plumbing parts are as sketchy as Amazon auto parts.

Awesome! You forgot to say "and remember viewers, if i can do it, you can do it."
smart way of getting the fitting down inside the barrel. To bad those fittings are made so poorly even for that price point.
Dude..just use a 3/4 npt pipe tap and a boiler drain with some sealant... done. You wont be happy with that filter always getting clogged either. 🎩🌄🇺🇸
Eric O works on a 1bbl. I was hoping for a 2bbl or 4bbl video but no.
