    I have to admit Tom, when i first heard you say your project goal was "a completed car" for $10k (damaged chassis included) was foolishly optimistic. But then, i didn't know the "hands on" skills you brought with you, nor your determination.
    I admire your style of of solving a given problem, then having the confidence in yourself to say "I Can Do That!" A lesser Man would Job it out...
    Try not to forget this is supposed to be FUN! Don't let the Bias of the words late and over budget ruin for You the satisfaction of a job well done and the skills you acquired along the way
    Bravo, I Salute You!

      Thank James. I'm having loads of fun with this car. This project is a real challenge and I want to spread the message that car restoration doesn't have to expensive or require instant satisfaction. Enjoy the journey I say. Thank you again for your support!

    You are a brave man sir. I use my oven for the heads, more uniform temp and if your wife is gone, the dishwasher works well to clean them up.

      Ha ha, I did flip the head like a steak. Dishwasher is a no no for me or I'd be replacing the whole kitchen after that!

      Garage Time - Restomod A participant on 912BBS got his case out of the dishwasher just before his wife came home. But his wife noticed that the rack was out and immediately- and accurately - accused him of washing his engine case. Book him, Danno!

    Tom, this is a great series on the all you are doing, very thorough on your process and explaining the procedures. Well done, this channel should be 100x more subs than you currently have. Keep up the great work, I watch all vids and learn new things.

      Thank you so much for watching Michael. The channel is focused on budget DIY skills and quality. Unfortunately channels that throw stuff together and then blow it up do very well. Go figure!

    Man, you have some strange 4th of July traditions. BBQ Porsche heads and valve guides on ice. Well, to each his own I guess. LOL. Nice work sir!

    Nice video. Your explanations were great. Your workarounds are great as well. Where there is a will, a carefully thought out way can be arrived at. Love the drill press motor mod. Very clever!

    Working in a machine shop that has to put a lot of EXPENSIVE bearings in gearboxes, I’ve determined that if I have to replace anything in my 914 or 912 heads I’m going to put the replacement part in dry ice overnight and heat up the head to over 200 degrees and that should get several .001s. If the boss would let me use liquid nitrogen, I could increase that to .005.

      I love using temperature to make things fit or break stuff apart. It works!

      Got another question: what kind of valve spring compressor is needed for these heads?

    Hello, Other than the belt driven slow drill, can you please list the specific tools used in this video? Thanks for all you do.

      Are you asking about the cutters? Everything else was homemade. I think the video description has links to the cutters

    Newey cutters come in many sizes. One or two sizes bigger, and You would be OK.

      Turns out I had the right size, but the center section is moveable for clearance. Works like a charm

    Tom why the two different valve angels 45 degrees on the valve and 46 degrees on the seat?

    • @GarageTimeAutoResto
      @GarageTimeAutoResto  4 роки тому

      You don't have to do this, but many recommend it as it promotes better wear in. This happens very quickly. In fact for me this angle change went away when I lapped the valves with a very fine paste.

      I think 30 deg, but if you need I can go find it and measure

    What do you suppose is the rationale behind the 356 exhaust port design?
    Probably the single most important thing on an air cooled engine is heat management. The rectangular port design is interesting because it’s a larger surface area per volume, so it transfers more heat to the head for the same given amount of exhaust flow. Because it’s relatively thin, the hydraulic diameter is relatively small, which limits flow.
    The semi-Hemi combustion chamber is really smart, but I don’t exactly understand the exhaust design.

    • @GarageTimeAutoResto
      @GarageTimeAutoResto  4 роки тому

      My guess is they tried to orient the exhaust port with that of the airflow from the cooling shroud. There's more open area for airflow to cool the head.
      Less exhaust flow reduces horsepower which also reduces heat generated.
      These engine typically don't have heat issues if treated right.
      The 911 design is better all around and it uses round exhaust ports, so I think it might have been a stepping stone design.
