Saw this in 1976 every Saturday morning when I was a lad , loved it and was a must to watch , pretended we were it afterwards as kids playing in the local woods , great memories and a time when tv was about people and worth watching
Just saw this episode, more than 45 years after I saw it for the first time on Dutch tv in the second half of the 70's. Thanks Robbo. I hope you uploaded more because now I want more. ;-)
One thing you notice on these old series is how lush the countryside still was at the time. I wonder how many of these woods and forests still survive? They were the best of times.
It still does look like that! It was filmed mainly at Woodchester Park, near Stroud, Gloucestershire, England, now looked after by the National Trust. I watched a couple of the episodes being filmed in the 1970s and one of my school mates was an extra in it. They left the sets up after they had finished filming for people to look at.

Never knew they rode those horses for real, no cgi in those days but thought they would use doubles. Great show, need more like this now, kids are fed too much junk.
@@pryncezzzshreck7550 Ha! He was my landlord in Hampstead once upon a time. I remember him moaning how when he played a James Bond villain's henchman all his dialogue ended up getting cut. His character fell to his death in the Alps. Gothard exclaimed "Even my scream was dubbed!" :0
Good to see that Oliver is still busy being an actor - he somehow survived an encounter with Joan Collins in 'The Stud' . Poor Arthur of the Britons - what would your friends have done if they'd found out that you were actually born in Switzerland
I've just added a post on filming the final scene of this episode back in 1972. Please go to my blog at SophieNeville. net The secrets of filming Arthur of the Britons. I can also report back on a later episode I appeared in.
That was my sister. they never asked if she could ride - luckily she was quite happy on the horse. I did appear as a Saxon child in the scene where Kai and Elka return to the Saxon village but had nothing to say.
The Britons which is the name of the Native ethnic group of Britain. The English and welsh have a strong amount of Briton genes still in them , the English have a mix of Germanic and other people groups also (I have a little Finnish most likely from Norse slaves somewhere in my ancestry) The Saxons , Angles , Jutes and Frisians conquered , enslaved and assimilated the britons. The saxons , angles etc tended to make up the noble classes while the peasants were mostly from briton stocked who had been germanized / saxonized over time. Wales , parts of England , Galicia , Brittany are the only places left with Brythonic culture :) Which is a celtic group like the Gaels of Ireland, scotland and the picts of scotland and the french who have Gaulish blood but were heavily influenced by another germanic group known as the franks which is where the name france comes from :D Yay history is amazingly fun and interesting

And there was less health and safety back then or you could say it was almost unheard of I think non existent.
When I was a teenager, I watched the series every Tuesday since April to September, 1976, in Spain.
In uk wasn't shown Saturday morning in76, it was shown after school about 4.30pm
OMG....internet is awesome i thought never in my life would see this again...(first time 1974..!)
Great series , absolute love my childhood in the 70s
I watched these movies in th 70's too. ( 1976/77) I still do. Love it.
One of my earliest memories of television, haven't seen this for donkey's years
The entire show is available on DVD.
Great to see this series again.RIP Michael Gotthard.
Never saw this first time round, would have been at work. Oliver Tobias was such a dish.
I fell madly in love with Oliver Tobias when he was in Arthur of the Britons.
Yes!!!
I too
Yessss....me too 😍
First time I've seen this since it was first aired. They really put soul into it.
Thank you! One of my favourite childhood series!
I watched this show when I was a teenager. Arthur is still gorgeous.
This started my life long interest in Anglo-Saxon and British medieval history
Great series, I remember it well. And at the time we all thought Tobias would have made a fine James Bond...

My childhood, they don't make programs like this any more
Mine too, John 🙂
Brian Blessed was played by Brian Blessed.
Lol.
Mark of Cornwall wasn't he ???
no one played Blessed better than Blessed
No one else could do it Lol!
Omg Brian Blessed's muscles... This is wonderful, oh the memories 🥰

this is the best thing i've seen in a year!
I always thought this was rather better version than the rest of the films
Incroyable !!! Je suis Français et quand j'etais enfant j'etais fan. Merçi
Les DVDs en VO sont commercialisés... mais la VF télé ne l'a pas été.

Thanks so much for the upload. I loved this as a kid.

Loved this series when I was a kid...top intro. music as well..
Great program Loved it
I'd forgotten how beautiful Oliver Tobias was.
And let's not forget Michael Gothard! What a shame he is gone.

I was only 5 or 6 when i first saw this but somehow i remember it and low and behold its on you tube
This takes me back. This is much more the Arthur of the later books by Bernard Cornwell.
Been reading excalibur during lock down and it made me think of this series
I watched this on acid back in the day
ps A fun trip down memory lane, but I think it was better first time round
Good to see that Oliver is still busy being an actor - he somehow survived an encounter with Joan Collins in 'The Stud' . Poor Arthur of the Britons - what would your friends have done if they'd found out that you were actually born in Switzerland
Switzerland, really? I wonder if there's any relation...
Zurich ,1947.
Hmm. Interesting indeed. Never seen it, never heard of it till now. Look forward to watching some of this
Loved it
Wow. This is pretty good
Michael Gothard is wearing the same armour he wore in The Last Valley.
I noticed that - also, I think a jacket with big sleeves makes an appearance in both shows.
RIP Michael Gothard
Hilarious, to think I rushed in from school to watch this!
Great
That Sutton Hoo helmet placed on Arthur was a bit of a fuck up eh
Saw it in Spain, around 1976 or 1977.
April-September, 1976.I was an absolute fanatic of the series.
Only if men in this world could return to being men and have the same attitude to fight against the tyrrany we now face.
British children TV will never be the same
Authenticity a bit dodgy, but bloody good entertainment !

You were the little Saxon girl with her brother that Kai saved if I remember right?
That was my sister. they never asked if she could ride - luckily she was quite happy on the horse. I did appear as a Saxon child in the scene where Kai and Elka return to the Saxon village but had nothing to say.
Ah right, thanks Sophie :-) Did you carry on acting?
Brian Blessed in the most Brian Blessed role ever. The beard still needs a little more work though...
Thanks!! But there are the 24 episodes, please?

loved this as a kid corny as piss 50 odd years on still good at the time
why did you stretch it from 4:3 to 16:9? WHY?!
So much wrong, clothing weapons, no sheild wall , hair by Axeminster. But still excellent
Kye, the late Michael Gothard.
Is it just me or did Oliver Tobias look like a young Martin Landau in this serial?
Yes, yes, indeed!!
And no less than Elmer Bernstein wrote the theme music - I thought it sounded great
Love it, it's so bad, it's good. At least it's not bloody medieval knights in plate armour. Happy Memories.
You have this series in Spanish plis
You can watch in UA-cam the 1975 movie, bases upon the series, with a spanish-mexican dubbing.Titled 'Arturo,el joven guerrero'.
Simple times
Stirrups fitted to saddles not seen in Britain until 1066. I should get out more!
Not strictly true. Though definitely not in this period and definitely not on horses as big as those.
You should. lol!
Cracking series. But stirrups? On a 5th/6th Century Romano-British cavalry horse?.. ; )
that's health and safety for you mate
At least they got the ponies right.
