Do THIS before learning strum patterns on guitar is the topic of today's guitar lesson for beginners. Hey guys, Brad Litton from SimpleGuitar.com here with another beginner guitar lesson for you. Getting natural, smooth sounding strumming hinges on being able to be used to moving your hand up and down constantly no matter if you hit the strings or not. The easiest way to get used to that motion is to first learn THIS strum pattern that most guitar players overlook. Spend more time getting used to this strum pattern and it will help make every other strum pattern easier.

Thank you so much, Brad, as usual, very interesting lesson.
My pleasure!
Great lesson, Brad. This looked too simple (trivial) at first sight, but it wasn't so in truth. Actually, this lesson unravels the much needed 'sense of timing' in strumming -- no matter how basic it might be. In particular, it helps fine-tune the 'time interval' between successive up-and-down strokes in strum patterns. Thanks so much!!
That's exactly right! It's really easy to dismiss this as "oh, that's too easy" until you try doing it. It really is the key to keeping your rhythm nice and steady and in-time. Glad it helped you out!
Hopefully this isn't a dumb question. How do you know which chords are a 5 string, 6 string, ect? Thank you for your help.
That definitely is not a dumb question. When it comes to your open chords, you're playing 4, 5, or 6 string chords. You'll know by looking at the chord diagram and seeing if there are any x's above a string. That means that you don't play that string. If you see an X above you're 6th string, the you're playing a 5 string chord. If you're seeing an X above your 5th and 6th strings, you're playing a 4 string chord. Otherwise, it's a 6 string chord. That's just to get you started. As you advance you'll see chords that mute strings within the chord or only 3 strings (like your 2nd, 3rd, and 4th strings for example). Hope that helps!
@@SimpleGuitarDotCom Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions. Very helpful information!
Brad, do you ever skip a bottom string or two, rather than top strings, on the upstroke? Is that something that is done?
Do you mean like just playing the lowest sounding 4 strings and skipping the 1st and 2nd strings? Yes. Absolutely. Now I’ll have to make another video on that
@@SimpleGuitarDotCom yes, that is what I was thinking. I tried alternating between hitting the high E, then skipping it and maybe the B as well, and I thought it sounded kind of good. But I need to be more consistent about it, I think, and not just sound random.
Your hair's getting long there Brad! Lettin' it all out, eh?
Good video!
I was inspired by this Canadian metal guitarist I know to let my hair grow out. I will never match the grimace face, though, 😂
@@SimpleGuitarDotCom Sounds like he needs to "get a haircut, and get a real job" if you know what I mean! 😉
