I think that it's cool that although ragtime music is mostly forgotten by the general public (most people wouldn't even be able to identify the genre) ragtime is very much alive among people who play the piano. Before picking up the piano very late in life I wondered why anyone would bother to learn such a difficult musical form. Now that I play I can answer that question: because it's fun!
Actually in some rags, (the entertainer is an example) The tempo increases a bit during the last half of the phrase only to slow back to the original tempo for the first half of the next phrase.
This is urgent ;-; Please can someone give me a definition on how to identify ragtime music? I need to find out although I can't seem to find anything that gives me a decent definition
Hi angelthman, it's a tough one to explain in words! A melody in march is very 'straight' and on beat e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4. Think of a melody in ragtime as being 'ragged'. The melody will often be played in between beats and certainly not on beat like a march would be played. I hope this helps.
@@PianistMagazine Thanks for the response, and it helps a little. It would be awesome if you did a video illustrating what you explained. Maybe also converting a march to ragtime to demonstrate the concept, and perhaps show staff to explain how notes are played. It would be the only video of its kind on UA-cam. No one seems to go into syncopation in depth.
I normally don't bash other artists, but the fact that this video is in the related videos to my original composition, and the fact that it's in the same key, has a very, very similar bassline and the first note is also the first note of the refrain in my song- I just have to say that snooty piano guilds and schools exclude real artists and kill composing as an artform.
did you use any inspiration for your song or did you just come up with the whole thing without using any other source? have you ever learned a ragtime song by another artist?
So great! My 8 year old is giddy watching this. Thank you for inspiring him!
And... shes 15 now...

Interesting as I heard motifs in this comming from the pineapple rag and the entertainer.

Good rhythm and nice ragtime style. And so what, it seems to be from intermediate to advanced pianists. How high!!

No one seems to have a good explanation of syncopation. Can't quite understand the difference between a melody in a march and a melody in ragtime.

How is this intended for a beginner?? I barely understood a word he said! Publish a lesson intended for a REAL beginner!
Well it's meant for people who have some knowledge about music, not someone who wants to jump ahead of everybody in impatience
+uncleelroy2 I agree its definitely not for a beginner. the title is very misleading. Plus his teaching style is quite boring
+AG FilmWriter it's for people with some musical experience; that's easy for them.

This song was written in 1968
Where do you get your ideas from?
What an annoying metallic sound.
Mmm... this lesson is like super useless... xD He just plays some famous songs, and then some famous small melodies!
I learned a lot
Not true
Very nice presentation.
