The lip-smacking that he does almost the whole time is his pleading. When he does it with the chattery teeth added, he is begging for something. The lip-smacking is a fearful response ("Please be nice to me;" Please don't hurt me"; "Please don't hit me"; "Please feed me"; "Please give the bottle back to me"...)
At about 2:04, he does the distress call of a baby monkey (In nature, they do it when they get separated from their mothers. "Mom, where are you?!")
At 5:00 he briefly panic-cries and displays a fear-grimace.
Monkeys do not smile; they grimace to show fear.
At 6:07 he is clenching his feet and covering his genitals. (A protective move, showing stress.)
Afterwards, he just sits looking away from his 'caretaker'.
At 7:53 he begins the combination fear grimace + lip-smacking, which is him begging/pleading. "Caretaker" taps his mouth in response, and he closes his mouth and looks away.
At 8:18, he fear-grimaces and pushes her arm away, then looks away again.
This is a distressed, fearful infant monkey. He tries to keep himself safe by using the typical monkey's submission behavior.

He is so thin. I am sure he has a lot of pain in that leg. He doesn't look healthy. They way he clinches his good foot shows he is nervous and in pain. This poor little guy has a long row to hoe.

You realize these animals are stolen from their mothers by poachers right? The mothers are often murdered in the process. These animals have the intelligence of three year old humans. They're also endangered.
If this monkey doesn't die whilst captive, it will be abandoned in the wild when it reaches adulthood and is no longer tame and cute enough to make money via views. Most will die soon after abandonment, as they don't know how to live in the wild with their own kind.
I know you mean well. But you are part of the problem. By watching these videos you help support the illegal poaching and imprisonment of innocent, endangered, highly intelligent primates.

This is one of the few video shows where I believe the owners really love the baby. Obviously with his amputation he can’t be returned to the forest, so I wish him well.

They won't take care of him throughout his life. He will be euthanized or tortured to death...or abandoned in the wild to die when he reached adulthood and becomes difficult to handle and ceases to bring these people an income.

You might also see monkeys lip-smacking to one another after having a disagreement as a way of apologizing and making sure all is forgiven. It can also be a sign of affection or contentment. Not my words but from a primatologist research paper.

That's not a smile, it's a grimace. And the lip smacking is him trying to show he's not a threat, he's pretty much terrified of whoever he's with and showing it through his facial expressions. Poor baby.

When a money looks like it's grinning because he's expressing approval of something or someone. Showing their teeth is a show of possible aggression or challenging. In other words...they're not thrilled with being teased or antagonized as Koko is in this video. Koko is probably hungry and not interested in having to 'perform' for her tormenters.
He's telling mom that he doesn't feel good. You can see it in his eyes.
♦He is a nervous wreck !!! He doesn’t know where he is & most likely, he doesn’t even know who he is. He’s scared!!!. If he was still with his real vmommy, she would be carrying him. In the wild she would be nursing him & carrying him up to one to two years old.

He doesn't try to sit in this woman's lap or want to be held. That to me is a red flag. I think this woman has fooled a lot of viewers. What happens when filming is over? I don't think she is as loving as she would like you to believe. All that lip smacking could mean many things. But he seems to watch someone off camera with a lot of interest. That is a fear grimace. That's absolutely right, and it's so important. I've been scrolling along here looking for someone who gets it, and it seems that practically no one does.
That monkey should be DESPERATE to CLING to what he identifies as his mom. That instinct is actually more fundamental than any other, including rating unless he's starving. Think about this: in the wild, meaning, the environment that his every instinct has prepared him for, his ability to cling to his mother is the most vital to his entire survival. And that remains the case for many months. For the first couple of months he's CLINGING TO MOM for literally some 23 and a half hours a day.
The fact that he is not even trying to cling to her means that he has given up. That doesn't mean he's not confused as fuck. It means he's been punished so consistently for trying to do what his most basic instinct has been telling him to do that he had just given up. Look up the psych literature on learned helplessness. It's not a good sign.
And yes, that is absolutely a fear grimace!

She did an amazing job taking care of Koko. One can actually see the trauma he endured on his little face by losing his leg. All the hours we watched her wrapping and bandaging over and over. She was very gentle it e and tender with him .Never an infection, that amputation was beautifully taken care of. Never abandoning him, he is fully grown and an adult now. He never looked better, so healthy, happy and thriving. 💕👍🏻🤗

I watch and review Koko's videos because I love him passionately, and I love seeing how well he is treated, because that's how it has to be. Videos of people mistreating animals, I don't even see them.

The way you treat this baby monkey makes me feel you will make an excellent mother one day.
This animal was torn from its mother illegally by poachers and sold to this woman so she can make money from filming it. When the monkey bares his teeth it's called a "fear-grimace" - monkeys don't smile like humans. The lip-smacking is also a sign of distress, it's a submissive gesture it's using to appease his captor in an attempt to prevent more abuse.
When these macaques reach sexual maturity and stop generating revenue via UA-cam views they are abandoned in the wild where they almost inevitably perish from starvation or via murder at the hands of wild macaques, as they never got the chance to be taught how to behave in a troop hierarchy.
This person is an abuser of animals and a criminal. Not my idea of mother material.

Please submit this monkey to a sanctuary for monkeys so that he can live a normal life. He would live with other monkeys and have troop mates that he could play with and climb trees with instead, he’s just sitting there waiting for you to give him a bottle. I would like to know what he does in his life every day, all day long. Do you put him in a cage? Do you take him outside so that he can climb in trees? What does he do? Does he have interaction with other monkeys? You know raising monkeys with humans, without their own kind, causes them to have irreparable psychological damage don’t you? He needs other monkeys.
