I remember thinking after it was over that the John Wayne "True Grit" was what you told your kids as a bedtime story. The Jeff Bridges "True Grit" was how it actually happened. I like them both, but that's how it seemed to me.
This movie is more faithful to ENDING of the original novel, where as the Wayne movie is faithful to the middle of the novel. In the Wayne movie & the novel Rooster spends several days a trading post run by an Indian. Most of the Indian characters in this movie are slighted by the Coen brothers. In the Coen movie the family of Presbyterian Indians @ the trading post are reduced to two bratty sadistic boys. What is powerful about the Coen brother's movie is how Mattie's life is ruined tragically by her pursuit of vengeance. A powerful classical tragic statement about the nature of vengeance. I think, on balance, the Coen brother's movie is the more powerful.
The film is probably one of the best remakes made as the film has gripping acting, strong visuals, great characters & A sense of direction. (94%) (4.5/5 stars) (positive)
I liked the wild characters in this film, the whole danger wilderness aspect of it, but I thought the story could be better. good acting by matt though! :)
Listening to an English guy add his two pence to an iconic western movie is excruciating. Jeff Bridges was never difficult for me (a western boy) to understand.

"If Hailee Steinfeild is the supporting actress, Matt Damon is the Leading Actress" Best Quote ever
+Axel Djärv That's what Kimmel would also say.
kimmel gtf
i feel like Hitchcock is judging me for watching so much UA-cam
Yep, this movie made me realize how great Matt Damon is.
Had to put the subtitles on after a while cause I couldnt understand what Jeff Bridges was saying. Top film though
You can tell when the good Doctor likes something by the percentage of sentences he doesn't finish. Must be a good one this time.
StinkySQL Sixpence I
Jeff Bridges gives his best performance in this since The Big Lebowski and Iron Man 1
Tremendous movie.
One of the rare times a remake was more enjoyable than the original.

Jeff Bridges played Rooster a hundred times better than John Wayne.
Total nonsense
Mark does a proper Socrates in the last few seconds.
i read this book in school in the late sixties. the dialogue was terrific. this one is better than the wayne movie.

Really good film. The only thing I'd change is recasting Matt Damon. Agree too Jeff Bridges went a bit far.
I'm suspicious of people who have favourite films but this is probably my favourite film.
The word is "contractions", not "abbreviations".
Hailee Steinfeld steals the show again two iconic veterans
Absolutely...hands down.
Mark - you're great, but FFS - finish your lines of thought/ sentences mate!
There's a good 'billy.
Man I love westerns!!!

Looks like Hitchcock approves.
Want to see this film, it looks good and will hopefully go tomorrow
Never heard someone talk this much without saying anything
@tomroxelf yeah, the actress that can defeat you hand to hand with improvised weapons made out of the yellow pages.
@tomroxelf oh, you were quoting Kermode, sorry
Mayo is such a helmet, how can anyone not have seen True Grit
WSMDSA I have both versions but my dad who is massive film bluff hasn't seen either.
Lewis Cranston that is not possible.
@Jcolinsol Haha yeah! That's Hitchcock's equivalent of a beaming smile
@tomroxelf
I see what you did there.
Jeff Bridges was better, was he standing on JW shoulders.....well that's a debate.
She was dreadful and annoying. Wow she talked fast, great acting
i thought ut was boring, faaar too much dialogue. Unforgiven was much better.
Go watch Transformers you dimwit
The original is 1000000 times better
nope
