Jamaican Reggae Artist Shaggy | Coming To America, Military Service, How One Song Changed His Life

- Jamaican reggae fusion artist Orville Richard Burrell, better known by his stage name Shaggy, was born on October 22, 1968 in Kingston, Jamaica. At the age of 18, Shaggy moved to New York City with his mother, settling in Brooklyn. Since the crack era was in full swing at the time there, he ended up running with a bunch of street hustlers. But things soon started catching up to them. When a couple of his friends got locked up, Shaggy woke up and decided to take his life in a more positive direction. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. It was during his service where he perfected his ‘toasting’, the singing cadence that he’d become known for. Years later, Shaggy would reveal that the style was inspired by the way his drill instructors shouted commands. After his military days were over, he decided to pursue music full-time. His first hit, "Oh Carolina", dropped in January 1993.

I met him as a teen. He was so nice and funny. And I always remembered he smelled so good. Like flowers and spices. 😂😂😂
Shaggy is a LEGEND. Boombastic. It Wasn't Me. That Girl. Angel. Sexy, funky and funny. Been into his work since the 90s. ❤
Loved loved loved Angel... Ppl didn't appreciate that song enough❤❤❤
My dad was in the Marines with Shaggy. He told me he was very quiet and would drive a gold cart around different parts of the base. So he was shocked when he became a singer cause he was so quiet lol. 😂😂😂
A reserved artist. I can respect that.
Shaggy 🫡
He was focused
@dezerismith7529 yes in a way, I don't blame him for being quiet. It's better that way tbh.
@brebre23461 which is a good thing ?
Dang he was so beautiful
Let’s give Shaggy his flowers 💐
I didn't know he served in the military but in any case he is definitely a talented brother
Shaggy is a reggae legend who is an international worldwide sensation. He has released a lot of albums and hits during his career. It Wasn’t Me is still his biggest hit songs today and people everywhere are still playing that song til this day. That Girl with fellow reggae artist Maxi Priest is still on my playlist now.
I like Shaggy. Him and Sean Paul were the soundtrack of my life in the 90s and 00s.
"Oh Carolina" was an ANTHEM during my freshman year of high school.
Why ?
@@lexkanyima2195 Because it's a good song??? What's not to understand?
@ashextraordinaire just a good song
Boombastic was my jam
I love it too plus Oh Carolina.
Hot Shot is a masterpiece that I still play!
Mr. Boombastic was my jam as well as It wasn’t me and Angel.
Shaggy is one of my favorite Dancehall Reggae artists from the 90s along with Shabba Ranks and Supercat. I remember the Sting remix of Mr. Bombastic was getting more airplay than the original version. I like that he's now venturing into Soca after doing the Mood song with Kes the band because we need more collaborations between Jamaican and Trini artist. I think he's the only Jamaican artist to receive a diamond plaque.
Before Sean Paul, there's Shaggy
@4:48 shaggy has said he hated that song "love me love me".the reason being he never met janet. there was zero collaboration and he had to work around her schedule when doing the tracks. she wasnt even in the music video.
@11:00 this is why he didnt work with rihanna. he would have ended up doing the same thing.
Oh wow. Didn't know that. Thx 4 da info.
@@vu4uboo582 i think that is one of the many reasons why his career stalled. he had a bad experience working with a big time superstar. look at music, it is all about duets and being featured guest on songs.
Shaggy 💐
I always liked shaggy as a kid. He kinda reminds me of ginuwine. They both still sexy. I am obsessed the remix of bombastic, the remix always be fire classic hit.🔥 💛
Orville?!!! 😅
1968?!!!
He has such a Sexy Smile
Shaggy also appeared on two episodes of Baywatch singing In the Summertime with Rayvon and That Girl with Maxi Priest
Wow! This was a real eye opener for me. An amazing story. He was down and out more than three times..
When "It Wasn't Me" dropped, that song was really popular. BET played that song nonstop lol
Pure Pleasure, Bombastic and Hot Shot are Shaggy's best albums
Legend 💯 ❤️🔥 🇯🇲 🇺🇸
Camp Lejeune (La zhoon).
Awesome 🤩
It Wasn't Me was also Michael Jackson's favorite song.
😂😂😂😂😂 why this comment make me laugh IDK 😶, but rest in love M.J.🕊️🙏🏽

That girl with Maxi Priest is my top favorite from Shaggy
