Calm and deadly at the same time
How can this pair actually defend like that! It is absolutely astonishing. In my opinion they would be the best pair in the world if they can perform consistently in all tournaments. Yuta/Endo were really the GOAT in that department, not only strong individually but also able to cover each other when they sensed the partner in need of support.

When they are defending, they stood at the middle court, unlike Lee&Yoo who is other great defender who practice deep defending tactic. This shallow defending tactics allows them to access better coverage area especially front court and it takes superb reflexes & courage to withstand crazy attacks by their opponents. I wonder how they practice that in their training with Watanabe plays 2 diciplines (MD & XD)?
I think if Watanabe only plays in one discipline (MD), they can be rank no. 1. because he plays in two discipline (MD & XD), he must share his focus and also his energy
Also they're confident in low returns with a guy camped menacingly at the net. The pressure on the front guy to finish the point is immense and worse everytime it comes back.

I think this pair is a perfected form of Malaysian kkk/tbh that is known as a diamond pair, tough to crack and beautiful attacking. Although they r great to watch but they tend to be playful while defending, provoking opponents too much, while yuta/endo more objective oriented type of defending, they r waiting to kill instantly and didn't waste their effort just to being playful
According to Gill, the ones which done defense training and defensive skills are Koreans, she always said "Defend like a Korean" and so as they are trained by a Korean Legend that's why I think their defense become that good

They are Cai Yun/Fu Haifeng, Lee Young Dae/Jung Jae Sung, Hendra Setiawan/Markis Kido, Koo Kien Kiet/Tan Bong Hoeng. Those are the legendary defense all of time. Even when they're dominating for the top 5, Endo/Hayakawa hasn't chance against them bro. We don't even said Boe/Mogensen, Ko Sung Hyun/Shin Baek Chol, Kim Gi Jung/Kim Sa Rang. They're really dominating at that time. In the past top 10 rank always really tight and competitive. Every pair possibly can beat each other. Tbh now's competition isn't as competitive as in the past.

Imagine, even when Hiroyuki Endo in his productive age with his past partner Kenichi Hayakawa, they even hasn't chance againt the list top 5 that i list above. The old badminton era was tougher than you see and think now dude. Competition in the past era more evenly distributed. In this era, badminton only dominated by rank no 1 and 2 or player who start to dominate like Endo/Watanabe. You just see them in the small period, they just even hasn't reach rank no 1 Then you don't know about Lee Yong Dae who consistently has one of the greatest defense of all time for most of his career till now i guess.
