With all of the mail floating around out there, they had to come up with a way to organize all of those letters and packages, making sure they got where they needed to go in time. The post office and its successor the United States Postal Service implemented several innovations to help sort and distribute the mail.

20 years ago, even if you put NO ZIP......it would STILL get to the address......even if it took an extra week.
TODAY, even if you have the address AND ZIP and etc FLAWLESS.......all kinds of mail is returned saying "we couldn't FIND it!"
(EX: the entire USPS said they had no clue where the offices of ROLLING STONE on 6th Ave in Manhattan were....despite mountains of mail going to that EXACT office for 50 years!!! My letters even had the exact FLOOR NUMBER (!!), besides all other info correct. No matter what me and my local post office tried, my mail would illegally be returned. The experts all said "this MAKES NO SENSE!" and it was never resolved.)
(again, EVERY time I had EXACT addresses.....my mail would falsely be returned!! And i spent $$$$ re-sending etc!)
ALSO, here in NH, it was taking 3 WEEKS for my letters to go 30 miles!!
EVERY TIME!
Yet my friends could mail me stuff from NYC in 4 days!!
ANY THEORIES??
Every postal worker I asked was just as baffled!

What happens if someone’s handwriting is too messy for the machine to read?
There is a specific office in the USPS system that a picture of the address is sent to and then it is translated and processed by an expert remotely. The letter is then resubmitted into the system and sent to the correct address.
My check has been over 9 days late for my last two pay periods. And all I get for answers from my local post office is it's some how my fault my check is missing. And they give me ridiculous excuses like maybe your mailbox isn't active maybe the address is wrong. Or maybe your employer didn't mail the check in the first place. But it is never their fault. Even though the mailbox is active the address is correct it was mailed. And it keeps happening over and over with my check out of 300 checks. After two years of no problems all of a sudden my check is taking 10 plus days to arrive. Or never arrives at all then check is resent to only get lost yet again.
Why wouldn’t you just get direct deposit
