Dark Star - June 14th-1991 RFK Stadium D.C.
The Dead are playing their second set inside the stadium and Mom and I are walking around the parking lot selling my necklaces and friendship bracelets. We can hear the band clearly and suddenly the energy of the crowd walking around shifts excitedly as “Estimated Prophet” fades and Jerry’s electric guitar starts a dreamy rendition of “Dark Star,” his notes high as if we are all taking off on a spaceship together. The audience inside irrupts with catcalls. I grab Mom’s arm and yell at her "Mom! Do you hear it? They're playing Dark Star!"

If you look close somewhere around 3:20 you can see the sweat from Phil's hands reflecting the light from the fingerboard where he's been playing. I love stuff like that.

Anyone commenting on Phil- well deserved. Phils roots- mingus and Jamerson. Everyone in this band was deeply influenced by jazz. Even prior to Miles opening for them. Beautiful DS boys. Glad we cut our teeth on this growing up. Miss the emin chord on the bridge from the 68- 72 years. Still beautiful.

    "Glass hand dissolving
    to ice petal flowers
    revolving"
What a great lyric from the great Robert Hunter.....

    Give the drummer some! Yeah!
This was so well done. Love seeing more of Bill and Mickey with Phil's neck on the side!
    Awesome. Magic. Thanks.

How many people could do such free form work as the grateful dead? There are enough versions of this signature song to keep people busy for ever!

This Dark Star rivals Winterland '74 for me personally. Though I love so many Dark Stars but all for various reasons.
Each one takes you to a different galaxy you've never been before. This one takes me beyond galaxies.

My second show. Holy shit it rained like hell! I remember there was a mudslide pit on the field. A fairly feral show as I recall, and this song was a highlight of highlights. (one of Brent's last, too)

People rarely mention Mydland s interplay with Jerry. Really interconnects in this Dark Star.
Always felt that Mydland was at his finest in '90. Little did we know he would be leaving us a few weeks after this show. RIP Mydland.

This track develops a strange mix of moods. Initially slow but quite jaunty .... then the lyrics introduce an aura of doom ......

That's Jerry's guitar synth rig you're hearing. I believe he used a Roland GR-50 that he had MIDIed up to a couple other synth modules.

i'm also enjoying Dark Star like never before! so, it must be real good to stand out against all the other times I've heard it done. but, it's not the best Dead song in my opinion...that would be Scarlet Begonias/Fire on the Mountain

Can people really, really understand The Grateful Dead if they have never taken LSD. I don't think one can truly appreciate The Dead without LSD.
Grateful Dead music is the soundtrack for the Psychedelic Experience.

By summer 1990, they would have been playing this live for at least 20 yrs, might explain the nonchalance on his part (best guess I've got anyway). Nice observation Lord Toru; like your comment

Don't hate but can't see the point of using two drummers, not with this type of music anyway, in my view it doesn't add (much) to the melody.

    • @buddyparrot1
      @buddyparrot1 5 років тому

Maybe not, but you have to admit, they work well together. Any drummer who's ever tried to work with another drummer can tell you , it aint easy! I was in a Dead cover band, a good one, and one drummer was enough.
