    Have been waiting years for this story, since you did that interview about the I care recording process (with those amazing vocal stems I still thank you for). Also thanks for confirming she recorded a sixth full voice chorus, I just knew it, always felt sure about it. "Love On Top" is my favourite Beyoncé song, a timeless classic and you had the privilege to work on her best album, 4. She was really experimenting back then.

    First of all, thank you for posting this. The modulations of Love On Top speaks for themselves as far as their greatness. I think another interesting about this story is about what a person who has a great voice, and a high understanding of music theory can do. She has a wide connected vocal range and she knows how to use it and it's not just for show. There's a purpose for how and why she emphasizes dynamics wrt her harmonic arrangements and her placements make sense when we listen to her songs beyond them being "bops." As many said, 4 was an amazing album and she's been a part of many more since. I want to thank you most of all for being a part of it because y'all create wonderful things that I love listening to from the day I first heard it.

    • @djswivel
      @djswivel  3 роки тому +52

      She definitely comes up with her own harmonies and has her own style in how she layers them. A songwriter might give her some ideas to build around, but she almost always does her own unique thing. I suspect she doesn't know the name's of chords or keys she hears. At least she never displayed that understanding of music theory to me. But she absolutely does hear it! When you're a musician, you know immediately what notes are in key and what isn't, even if you don't know the names of them.

    Thanks Swivel for putting these videos out really enjoying them, I really value what you say.
    I have a production question about something I’m struggling with.
    Coming from a production standpoint how do you decide what to have centered in the mix? I’ve noticed if you have chords or a pad it can sound too consistent if they are sustained notes. Making the mix not feel as open.
    I’m thinking it might be a balance problem. Here are a couple things that come to mind that might fix it but I’d love to know your approach and opinion on this.
    -lack of stereo information/higher frequencies for balance
    -a simple EQ/level adjustment might fix it
    -adding movement to the sound or maybe a different sound would work better for the idea
    -thanks for reading

    • @djswivel
      @djswivel  3 роки тому +6

      I typically keep the main drums (kick/snare/claps/some hi hats), bass, and lead vocals in the center. Everything else should at varying degrees be placed in the stereo field. Some pads can be nice and wide. Some lead instruments might just be panned a small amount.

      I hear you, but I've never viewed it that way. Working for an artist like Bey is a privilege, and many people would kill for that gig. And when you're at that level, you don't want your staff holding you back. So artists look for people who are willing to give them everything just so they can continue with their pace. I think this video is creating some misunderstandings. There was never more key changes. You guys heard the maximum key changes she wanted. She just said she physically COULD do more. The song is exactly the version Bey wanted the world to hear though.

      Hey Ray! You're totally right that modulations are super common in gospel, guess when I was reminiscing on that story it kinda slipped my mind and I mistakenly generalized to pop and radio music!
