You are actually VERY close to the very best bbq ribs I've ever had. The Sugar Shack at Ocean Isle Beach in North Carolina. They also have the best Coconut Shrimp I've ever had!!! They specialize in Jamaican (jerk) chicken and fish, but i always get the ribs and shrimp. More expensive than it was pre-covid. I would still part with the cash, though. 😉 (Just a heads up, it can be very busy, and wasn't a very big place last i was there.) I'd be interested to know if it beats the Flintstone, lol.
In the American tradition, there are four prominent BBQ regions: Kansas City, Carolina, Memphis, and Texas. These four barbeque styles represent the most recognized regional renditions of smoked meat. You’ll find each style's techniques, rubs, and sauces copied across the U.S. From their cuts of choice to their sides. Look up the 4 regions of BBQ and what makes them so different.
Diana & Phil , That Chocolate Pie is a '' Chocolate Meringue Pie ''. Meringue is topping used on a lot of different kinds of Pies in America. It's a stiff egg whites and sugar mixture that is whipped until stiff peaks are formed, then applied to pies as the final topping.
@@O2life my grandmother made a Lemon Meringue and a Chocolate Meringue pie every holiday. I had nightmares about Meringue when I was a toddler. I like it a lot more now.
I've had coconut and butterscotch too. Pretty much any custardy pudding pie you can imagine can have meringue. There's a fantastic cake icing that is fluffy and tastes similar (like marshmallows). My family calls it "7minute frosting" if you want to try it on your favorite cake or as a dip for strawberries.
"Flat" shrimp is typically referred to as butterfly shrimp. It is completely normal shrimp that has a cut made down the middle to allow the meat to be spread which results in a larger surface area (and a larger appearance on the plate). Some restaurants do it to make you think you are getting more. Some do it so there is more breading per shrimp. Some do it because it cooks faster which can change the eating experience.
I was eating butterflied fried shrimp in the 1960s and seafood restaurants at the New Jersey Shore. They taste better that way and it's very traditional.
@Tiffany Yes, Texas beef BBQ is a step up… or maybe two. It’s all good but a semi-intelligent monkey can cook pork. 🙃 The fact that North Carolina style BB’s claim to fame is how much vinegar or mustard they put on the finished meat is all you need to know. 😃 It tastes great but King??
Yes but they're different styles. I live in TX but love Carolina BBQ - particularly a pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw. If you ordered that in Texas it wouldn't be as good. But in Texas I think the meat tastes better which is why you don't use sauce.
@@BethC817I think you mean the beef tastes better in Texas. That's true about the sauce, like a good steak you don't need any when it's cooked right. They often don't even make pork butts. You may live in Texas but I have a feeling you are not A TEXAN...yet.
That cheerwine drink is from NC alright. And I think the pie has whipped meringue, similar that is used in lemon meringue or key lime pie. Made with whipped egg whites and sugar

Hey guys, I love you two! I've been watching your travels for a while. I'm from Lexington and appreciate your trying our regional fare. I worked my way through high school and college working at Jimmies bbq, which closed a few years back. We called the red slaw, bbq slaw, and the vinegar sauce is called dip, not sure who came with that name. But it looks like you two enjoyed your meal! Keep posting! I love your take on life!!
I used to travel to Texas for work a lot and I love brisket. So I have to disagree with Lexington being the BBQ capital of the US, let alone the world. The topping on the chocolate pudding pie looks like meringue, which is made from egg whites and sugar which are whipped with a mixer and then put into the oven to get the brulee look and taste. A lot of pudding pies in the US, chocloate, lemon, and banana use it as a topping instead of whipped cream and I much prefer it over whipped cream, especially if it is that thick.
LOL, sure sounds like Peach Toddlers and Cheese Turds. If that is what you actually said, then it is really Peach Cobbler (like the shoe maker) and Curds. Oh, and the topping on the pie is Meringue which is made with egg whites and sugar. I am not a fan and prefer whipped cream, but we all have our own way. I am a slaw on the sandwich type of guy.
It’s very cold for May here in Virginia also. Weird weather everywhere. I love the North Carolina bbq with the vinegar based sauce and I like the cole slaw on the sandwich. 😂
I have a trip planned to NC this fall and your video made me so excited about having bbq while we're there! I live in TX and went to high school in VA, so I'm always torn between the two bbqs! I love both TX and NC style but never knew there were 2 kinds in NC. I've only had the eastern! Looking forward to trying the western.
In truth there are 3 types of Carolina barbecue which is Lexington style (Western North Carolina), Eastern style (Eastern North Carolina), Southern style (southern North Carolina and all of South Carolina) Edit: the differences are: Lexington Style: Tomato based vinegar Eastern Style: Vinegar based Southern Style: Mustard based vinegar
Deana, first of all, I love you guys and really enjoyed watching Phil experience varieties of southern cuisine so don't take this wrong, but are you sure you're from the south? First of all, that was not "skin" you were eating when y'all ate pork shoulder, that was the bark. The bark is the crust that builds up on the outside of a piece of meat when it's smoked low and slow. Pork shoulders don't have a skin. Secondly, have you never seen meringue? Any girl from the south with any kind of southern raising knows the difference between meringue and VA whipped cream topping " I think you said when y'all tried that chocolate pie. That being said, please refer to my intro. I do love your videos and look forward to many more from you. Auf Wiedersehen und vielen Dank.
In Alabama it’s more a north south sauce divide. The spicy tomato BBQ sauce is what you’d find in the north, the mustard vinegar BBQ sauce is found in southern Alabama. Like North Carolina, it’s pork based (or chicken). I much prefer my BBQ sliced or those big pulled chunks yum! over pulled pork which is a bit too mushy for my taste. I’m surprised that Deana was unfamiliar with the chocolate pie. In my part of the South that is an old favourite. But if yours was like the ones we have that’s not a whipped cream nor a marshmallow topping. It’s a meringue, which of course we would also put on top of a Lemon Meringue pie. You basically make a custard filling that you flavour with cocoa powder. Then beat the egg whites for the meringue on top. Chocolate heaven😋 Thanks for the background on hush puppies. I heard they got their name from the dollops of cornmeal batter and onion that the cooks had at the cookout. They would toss blobs into the deep fat friers along with the fish and then toss them to the hunting hounds to keep them quiet and stop begging calling ‘hush puppies’ as they tossed them the treats.
I try to vacation in North Carolina. It's not a tough drive from NW Ohio. I love both styles of NC BBQ. I prefer SC mustard sauce, but any type of tomato based sauce will do. Phil, that dipping sauce for the shrimp is only ketchup and grated horseradish. Also, that chocolate pie was from scratch. That pudding was from scratch and so was the crust. Not too sure about the meringue topping. It could have been made with meringue powder. But the other two were from scratch. Pudding from a mix doesn't set up like that did. Enjoy!
I have two favorites, Kansas City BBQ and Carolina BBQ...both so different from each other. If you want something different yet, try Kentucky's Mutton BBQ, you'll be hooked. You must be pretty young yet....that topping on the chocolate pie is meringue. It's whipped egg white and sugar and is always baked to brown the top. Oh, and for future reference...BBQ is when the food is cooked on over the coals but in close proximity for a longer, slower trip to doneness. Grilling is over direct heat and that's only good for burgers, etc.
I love how Phil and Deana are so fair about rating a specific food. That aren’t immediately binary in decision in the first three bites like 80% of the FoodTubers out there. Honest, methodical and truthful food reviews are the best
I grew up in a part of NC that had the vinegar and spices sauce. Then moved to the western part of the state. Every time I go home, I bring back multiple bottles of just the sauce. The meat tastes similar, but the sauces are so different.
When I was a kid I worked at a Jewish Deli in west Los Angeles (frequented by the likes of Barbra Streisand and Rod Serling) where I learned to make a sandwich with pastrami, (New York Style) chopped liver, and cole slaw on Jewish rye. Slaw is always on sandwiches unless you tell them to leave it off. At least for eastern Carolina. Interesting I'm 30 minutes away and I really haven't had BBQ in 3 years. I had hush puppy covered shrimp once. Wish I'd run in to that vendor again. I love hush puppies. That's the only type of ice for drinks especially sweet tea, love crushed ice

Baked beans were invented in the Americas by the American Indians many hundreds of years ago. Baked beans are not British, and Heinz which makes baked beans then sells them in England is an American company. They also make Heinz Ketchup.
Yes, this is a good looking BarbeQue, and their Pork based style is probably very good, but BarbeQue from Texas is more Beef Based. Texans had to find a way to cook free-range Longhorn Cattle that werte as lean and tough as saddle leather. The Brisket is cut from the Chest and is a slab of lean muscle. Texas BarbeQue has more Mesquite and Pecan Smoke. It is influenced by more Mexican and Cajun Spices and the sides are more Western. Try Austin, Dallas or Houston for real Texas BarbeQue. I do not want to disparrage anyone else's offering, but please do not stop with North Carolina. Try Fried Okra, Banana Pudding, German Potato Salad and Beef Ribs. They will dwarf a Pork Rib and we also do Turkey and a Sausage with Jaapeno and cheeze in it.
Chocolate pie used to be my favorite until a movie came out featuring Ms Hilly's SPECIAL pie, or, the Terrible Awful. "What do you put in this that makes it taste so good??" "Eat My S." "What?" I recommend this movie to everyone if you need a good cry or education about life in the south in the 50s. The Help.
The chocolate pie is made with a chocolate custard, not a pudding. The difference between custard and pudding is the thickening agent used. Custard is made with eggs and gets much thicker than pudding which is typically made with flour or corn starch. Custard will hold up in a pie, pudding would just fall all over the place the moment you cut into it.
When you get home to Germany make and bake a pie crust after that make your best version of Chocalte PUDDING ONCE pie crust as cooled add pudding make meringue add to top and brûlée. Chocolate Creame Pie
Are you certain that was skin on the pork or was it the bark, aka crust, from the long slow cooking process that captures all the smoke flavor? Looks like the col-slaw is more of a chow-chow relish which is usually a bit vinegary and spicy.
Thank you for not doing that reverse eating shot. You've never had meringue before? It's my favorite part of a pie. As for the hush puppies; those were originally made to be fed to the dogs so let the dogs have them.

"What do you put in this that makes it taste so good??"
"Eat My S."
"What?"
I recommend this movie to everyone if you need a good cry or education about life in the south in the 50s. The Help.
The fried shrimp look good and of course you got to eat them with cocktail sauce, also squirt on some fresh lemon.
Phil, Next time you go Tex-Mex or Mexican Food, try their Charro Beans ! They are so much better than Baked Beans !
When you get home to Germany make and bake a pie crust after that make your best version of Chocalte PUDDING ONCE pie crust as cooled add pudding make meringue add to top and brûlée. Chocolate Creame Pie
Wonderful News.

I'm sorry but the undeniable world capital of BBQ is Lockhart Texas and the surrounding Hill Country area..... Prove me wrong!!!!!
Have you ever had North Carolina barbecue?
Are you certain that was skin on the pork or was it the bark, aka crust, from the long slow cooking process that captures all the smoke flavor? Looks like the col-slaw is more of a chow-chow relish which is usually a bit vinegary and spicy.
Slaw in NC can take many forms. What they all have in common is cabbage.
Phil, if you enjoyed Peach Toddler & Wisconsin Cheese Turds, just wait until you try Cherries Jollibee
Cheese turds🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I think you mean curds. Boy I had a great laugh with this one.😂
Thank you for not doing that reverse eating shot. You've never had meringue before? It's my favorite part of a pie. As for the hush puppies; those were originally made to be fed to the dogs so let the dogs have them.
The other say I had a Ranch dressing that had a bit of blue cheese in it which was the best Ranch dressing I've ever tasted.
