Had absolutely no idea PLA had SM properties. Thanks for demo'ing.

I always think of musculature applications whenever I see/hear stuff on this topic.
Think of it this way, you have wire inside wire. You have a heating wire (simple carbon filament) and a memory shape alloy wire.
Instead of using actuators, or motors, or other high current devices, these wires could be grouped together in the same way as muscles and tendons to create a bio-mimmicking limb.

easier to just run electricity through the nitinol itself to heat it for this purpose.

Great video, as always 😎👍 makes me think of those plastic "mood" fish you used to get in Christmas crackers

The Ridgeway Banks video, an ABC news report In the 1970’s, also showed a bicycle wheel-type nitinol device. The wheel engine once immersed into a bath of hot water then falling into a cold bath spun immediately and with quite a force. The video later reports the nitinol was acting with more force as it continued and increasing speed.
When I saw this, as it was broadcast during the Arab Oil Embargo, I was struck by the terror this would cause energy producers. This very simple device, configured with magnets or a mechanical connection to a generator, could easily supply plenty of today’s needs (cell phone, LED lighting) whilst scavenging either exhaust vent heat, wood stove, etc.
The power estimates were not discussed.

This sounds perfect for making a displacer for a fluidyne engine.

The combination of 3D Printing and Shape-Memory Materials is both interesting and powerful. I am very excited to see what kinds of shape-changing products people develop.

There would be an advantage here for transporting flat sheets that have previously been formed into complex shapes . This would reduce the bulk during transport. Simply unpack the flat sheets, heat and hey presto ! you have your complex shaped panel or component

Huge potential in it's physical properties!

Very interesting probably one of the best solutions thank you for sharing. It's hard to believe efficiency was the only cause for this not to be developed, and the sun with vortex cooling would probably move such an engine

I can see applications for automatic self-cleaning. Good for solar panels...just have the process drag a wiper over it once a day

I've never heard it pronounced this way before. Maybe it's a geographic thing. In the US it's called nye-tin-all.

Thats a good point, I havent thought about U.S.'s pronunciation of ni(nickel)tin(titanium)ol(No clue)
But it really does not make sense does it?

Solar concentrator on one end, water on the other --> near the inlet of a black hose water heater? 🤷 Just spit-balling. I do realize that the concentration of solar can be used to heat the water, but I'm thinking in terms of scavenging, where the machine is a sum of many approaches instead of one mechanism. 🤔

Again a thermo battery ie sand would maybe keep the water warm so the spring generator would be viable?

Slightly off topic, other uses for pla etc, what about 3d printing separator sheet for supercapacitors, ion-exchange membrane for making naoh or pem fuel cells?

How about a mat that when you flow warm water through it rises upwards and lifts a weight and then when cool water runs through it the weight pushes it back down.

yep, economics long term, may put kybosh on the wider adoption of all sorts of marvelous technologies... No less marvelous and high tech - just not necessarily "viable" in a free and fair marketplace.
