Not sure about the UK, but here in the US they have what's called Salary exempt and non-exempt. The difference being non-exempt salary still has to be paid overtime, while Salary exempt is `exempt` from OT. However, there are legal stipulations as to the type of job that can `be` salary exempt and more than a few employers have been busted for hiring employees salary-exempt on jobs that weren't eligible, and it cost them a lot.
In the UK if you work beyond your contract hours you either get overtime or time off in lieu.
If the contract states a times I am supposed to work then it’s the time I am supposed to work.
