I was working securely that night and listening to the radio, BBC world service as the 1st reports were coming in. All we knew at this point was an earthquake and flooding. Someone from the BBC was interviewing an Indian official and asked, "what is the army doing"? To which the Indian official replied "we cannot reach our bases" and the reporter just went on to the next question on his list. Whilst I was shouting at the radio, Go back to the we cannot reach our bases bit, this needs more explanation! Just one of those things that has always stuck in my mind.
