  • Hi,
I'm Andrew and I live in Omaha, NE. The places that I recommend buying leather from are: Springfield Leather Company, Maker's Leather Supply, and the Wickett and Craig Tannery.
    Have a nice day :)

Very informative. I've always dealt with Tandy because I have one locally. Always good to know several sources. That full side is huge but worth the money. Thanks!

I really like your show. You have an awesome personality and you give a good description of the quality of leather. I was thrilled to see a black side of leather, wow that was a big surprise, I'm pleasantly surprised....Can't wait to see some of the things you make

Thanks for the helpful advice! I live in NE as well and I’m just starting my leather crafting journey. I’ve been looking for where to get my leather from and as you may well know there aren’t a lot of local options and I’ve been hesitant on buying online. I’ll definitely be name dropping you for the suggestion of Springfield leather company. They sound like the perfect place for what I’m looking for. 😊

I used to buy leather online because I didn't have any retail leather stores near me. Well I moved and now I seldom ever buy leather online because there is a Tandy store an hour away. I get the Oak Leaf veg-tan sides and I never get a bad one, that's what being able to pick out your leather will do. Just educate yourself to know what to look for. I've actually have received poor Herman Oak twice and stopped using that company. One time I went into Tandy and they had import whole calf leather that was just beautiful for wallets and clutches being 2-3 oz wallets were slim, but it tooled beautifully. The Oak Leaf tools great too, every bit as good as H.O. By the way Tandy no longer has the tiered prices anymore, same prices across the board.
I make belts mostly and having no defects from side to side is important. One of the H.O. sides I ordered had butcher cuts right in the center. Butcher cuts are made when the butcher is skinning the steer and slips and cuts into the hide. Half the side was useless for belts without lining them. They told me to send it back and I asked if they would send me a shipping label and they said no, they'll reimburse me when they send the new side. Bunch of trouble and I just told them nevermind I will keep it, but cancel my order sitting in my cart since they are so nonchalant about sending out an expensive side with a major defect. Didn't offer me a discount neither. Other bad Hermann Oak side I got had a freaking hole in the center and was utility grade leather over 75% of it, that time they did send me a shipping label.
Now? I only buy leather I can see, but that's fine the Oak Leaf is as good as Hermann Oak. I've used Zack White Leather for horse hides, makes great belts, but you have to order for belts. You can order horse butts and try to make your own Shell Cordovan. For exotic leather I've found Pan Am Leathers to be great for crocodile or alligator leather. They sell crocodilian belt strips too from $75 and up. They sell just about any kind of leather there is and most at decent prices. I've used their sting ray and it was fine, wears out your blade you use to cut it so I recommend a utility knife.

SLC is the bomb! I like their leather MUCH better than Tandy. Its better quality at a lower cost and even with shipping added in I get a better deal from then than my local Tandy. And the customer service is out of this world. And the fact that they will cut what you need is just frosting on the cake. If you ever get a chance to visit the store in Springfield do it. My wife and I and even my dog got a personal tour of the operation from the owner Kevin

You were SO close to showing the perfect video for me since I'm shopping around for the best buy on great looking leather. I wish you had unrolled everything so we could truly see what we'd expect to get from each of those suppliers. I can only assume you're pushing SLC since you weren't about to use their leather either but DID unroll theirs.

@skyline leather... hi I’m a new subscriber as of today’s date , great information on the video , I’m just starting freshly on using leather, my question is what type of leather can I use to make a wallet and what place can I order from .... please and thanks ..

For wallets you can use vegetable tanned leather or oil tanned leather. I would recommend going to the precut section on Springfield Leather's website. That way you can just buy small pieces that are already split down to the thickness you need. The outside of a wallet I use 4-5 oz and for the inside liner and pockets I use 2-3 oz.

I've been lucky with Tandy, I go there and am able to inspect the leather. I've ordered from Springfield and Weaver and have been disappointed, not terrible, but not good either. At least with Tandy I can inspect my purchase on both sides. Don't get fooled by a perfect top grain with a loose flesh side, it sux.

@@skylineleathercompany Exactly. Problems come from inexperience when it comes to choosing a hide. I mostly use shoulders for the consistency all the way across.

Tandy is not a fancy leather company and the tools and accessories are very high, although they are Taiwanese and Chinese. I was a member for long time(now membership doesn't matter , means, no discount price).

Hi there i'm still enjoying your helpful videos, but for starting out as I am, i'm needing to learn what is it I should be using on leather that is semi lightweight, I bought a pack of remnants as a good starter, I never got any heavy leather & I want to make maybe a keychain, coin purse, wallets or cigarette lighter holder, etc, I think the leather I got may be to light weight, so can any of this be successfully used, can it be thickened by being treated with a finish of some sort, i'd appreciate any helpful pointers that you can give me on this issue thanks.

    • @skylineleathercompany

For small projects like a keychains and wallets, I would start with 4-5 oz. For the pockets on the wallet definitely use 2-3 oz. Springfield leather has a really useful precut section where you can get small pieces cut at the thickness you need without having to spend a lot of money. Good Luck. At 5:00 you show a piece of leather that is very dark and I’m wondering why it’s that colour. Is it stained or dyed that colour or is it naturally dark? I’d really like to know because if it’s naturally that colour I can use it for a project I’m about to start. Thank you

Hi Andrew, What do they charge foe a 4 SQ FT chunk of leather. I'd guess about $8-9 a foot by the time they add on the shipping. Tandy leather is always a guessing game, one time you get good leather that works very well and other times they'll send something you cant pull through the splitter.Out of the several companies I have delt with for leather the one that has been the most consistent has been "American Leather Direct" out of KY and the HideHouse out of Napa CA.
I do enjoy your videos, keep them coming!

For bags and wallets I recommend using leather that is no thicker than 4-5 oz. If you go thicker than that you will end up with a very heavy bag or a wallet that is too bulky to fit in a pocket. Springfield Leather has a ton of wallet and bag kits. They are a good place to start and will teach you the construction of these projects and what kind of materials you will need. Good luck.
