I’ve been meaning to make this mix for a really long time and whilst I know it won’t be to everybody’s taste, I wanted to showcase some of my favourites tracks from when I first began DJ’ing way back in 2002! I wanted to be able to show people where my love for music started and where for me, it all began.
You may or may not know that when I first started buying vinyl’s and learning to DJ I fell in love with Speed Garage, Bassline House, Funky House and UK Garage - a music genre/scene that dominated Birmingham (my hometown) at the time.
I started out with some not-so-tight Numark belt drive decks and slowly began teaching myself the art of DJ’ing. When I say slowly, I mean slowly... For a short time I wasn’t even aware that I had to adjust tempo’s to mix a track and it’s safe to say my first couple of weeks practising didn’t sound too great! Fast forward twelve or so years, I’m now living my dream as a DJ!
I had SO much fun making this mix. It was both an amazing trip down memory lane and a pleasant surprise to realise that I sometimes drop a few tracks in my set now that I played allllllll those years ago!
I have absolutely no idea if this type of music was being played in your city/scene, wherever that may be around the world, however it’d be interesting to know... What I do know is that these Speed Garage / Bassline vibes were massive in the likes of Birmingham (UK) and Sheffield (UK) in the early 2000’s - if you were a part of the scene back in the day, you need no introduction!
This two-hour mix consists of 31 tracks that range in release year from 1996 to 2005. These 120 minutes are my ROOTS...

When Kudos and DV8 were going it was the best time to be out on the clubbing scene. With ministry of sound, sundissential, kudos, The Gale and DV8 it was the best place to be for clubbing at the time. And it's never been beaten since in the UK. The whole vibe, fashion, dancing style and atmosphere was unmatched anywhere. I really miss those days.

Brings back amazing memories Hannah! Our group friends spent every moment we could in the canal club Wolverhampton, Barney played the loft there and just took us all to another place it was just amazing. I used to drive from mid Wales sometimes two or three times a week, on top of working six days.. Nearly reversed into the milkman one night as I was leaving my friends house to drive the rest of the way home on my way to grab a couple of hours sleep.. Such good times. We also went to the light bar and another bar I can't remember the name of, doormen had to ask us to get down off the tables we were dancing on!

Wolves used to be the most amazing nites out. Nothing gets close to it. Canal, light bar, Picasso, atlantis, beach, kips, and so many more.

Brilliant mix I'm 39 so I used to go all the big clubs in Birmingham back in the 90s Bakers, miss money penny's, tin tins, wobble etc and this is a brilliant mix. Well done👍

Shit was so raw...it had this fresh & blooming pull on the hearts of all of us.
I am so Lucky finding the fabulous nectar of the dancefloor...such an accidental relationship with the dancefloor..but I feel like more & more the population on earth isn't having such formative experiences like we all did who had that opportunity....to grow & find ourselves from the plephora of opportunities that the late 90's - early 2000's bloomed out

I used to DJ in Stoodi's (9bar) during 2004/05, still got all these old bangers on vinyl! Great great times, really miss it.

After he got to know us, I used to drive him around, record shopping, taking him places, carrying flight cases.

D4 Damage I'm from the US, i lived in Tallahassee Florida, when i started listening to this. Once i moved to Orlando, there was a bigger deep house scene but Orlando breaks ruled and garage was still yet to be embraced. I think it's actually being embraced more now than ever. So that's fun to see. I live in San Diego now and don't really go out much so I just listen to music that makes me happy :)
