I still don't know how to take an easy run. Sometimes I tell myself to take an easy jog at 7:45 pace but instead go at 6:45 pace instead because I felt like it
Stop running if you feel pain. I've had many instances that I could have saved myself from ankle (or knee) injury if I had stopped running when I first felt pain. I still have difficulty distinguishing the pain that will go away when I keep on running from the one that I need to stop running right away. But I wish I had known more about pain and injury when I started running.
Go slow! Average people starting to exercise will go way too hard. Make your pace slow enough that you can talk in nearly full sentences. More pleasant, allows you to go for longer, makes you more likely to not be dead the next day.
Habitual runner here. People always ask me how to start and run. And more often, how to get fast. My simple response, just run. Don’t care about mileage, time or speed. After consistently running, the mileage will increase and the speed gets faster, over months or even years of consistently
I’m 58 and started running May this year. I did C-2-5K but didn’t actually get to the 5K. I stumbled on your videos on UA-cam and subscribed for the hints and tips and general encouragement and found them invaluable. I also bought a Wahoo Rival watch on your recommendation and absolutely love it. (best £99 I ever spent). I did my first 5K late July in about 50mins and thought I was going to die. But I kept on and set myself a goal of 5K in 30mins (Thinking it “would be actually impossible, but I’ll have a go”). I started a proper training schedule and just kept going following your hints and tips. Over the months my times started coming down. I ran a 5K race at end of September and set a PB 37:38. Two weeks ago I did a local 5K Parkrun in 32:56!! I was ecstatic! The 30min 5K is now definitely a reality!!….what’s next 1 hour 10K??. 🤔😁 So thank you so much guys for the help, tips and general encouraging merriment. Blessings to you all for 2025. 🙏🏻😎👍🏻
Yes definitely, shoes are very important. God has blessed in that ,I just happened to buy two pairs of very comfortable running shoes, when I actually didn’t know what to buy. 😁🙏🏻😎👍🏻
Great tips!! As a relatively new runner, I would add that one must not forget to enjoy the experience. Early morning runs are the best for me. Very little or no traffic, listening to the birds chirping, alone with one's thoughts. Nothing can beat that!!!
The warm up tip is the best. I am an older Triathlete and takes about ten minutes to get this body working. Even on the run I need about 1.5 Km's to start to crank up the speed. After that no worries for the 10 or 15 K.
Best advice stated here: get the right shoes for you. Started running during COVID and went to a running store to get a proper fitting for shoes. I found out I was wearing the wrong size and shoe type. Once I went up a size and got the right shoes for an over pronator, I haven’t had any real pain in my knees or feet.
8 month ago i adopted a 5 year old labrador. He was wery understimulated and dominating.... I tried a few things, but figured out, that long walks in the woods helped. Who knew?? :-D I tried the garmin Coach, and now i am a runner in the woods with my big yellow dog
I've got a book called "Science of Running" and it helped me a lot, both with understanding of running from the biological point of view, but also with example running programs, importance of rest and correct pacing. Would recommend to everyone
Huge miss on the list: learn the proper technique. I got so many injuries when I (re)started (20 years after high school). I hurt myself in various ways and I wish I’d learned the proper technique and corrected mistakes early on
If you don't have it: Get yourself a bike and start running later. On a bike, you will be able to do WAY longer sessions burning more calories in total and it can be integrated into your daily routine (traveling to work, groceries etc.) and you will be very quickly doing mulitple hour long sessions. While on running you will need months of training to do that. And bike is a lot more fun (for most people, see recent GTN poll). I am not trying to throw a shade on running at all. Just if you're trying to lose weight (as a new years goal for example) get into cycling (and swimming, but more cycling) and then start running later after you got a better fitness. My story: I weighed 120 kg at 1,78 m (264 lbs, 5'10") and tried running. Totally sucked, couldn't enjoy it and didn't stick to it. Then I discovered cycling and lost 30 kg (66 lbs) in a span of a year (and more later, got into fitness) Not because it is better from a calorie/hours point of view, but because it is WAY easier to stick to it. And it brought me to the point that I enjoy pushing myself hard, something I couldn't have imagined before.
Still I always ask how it comes,- that so many runners run so fast in the 1980 , with cotton t-shirts, nylon shorts, no smart watch and shoes that was not so good as them we got today? To beat the local 5 k record in my hometown both on the men and women group, we have to bring the fastest runners in the country. Maybe they will succeed. Actually I believe the woman who will try will fail, even carbon shoes. We know so much now, but it is just a few people who are faster.
Do you have any advice you wish you’d known when you started running? 🏃🏼♂️
Run by heart rate. Find your max hr and run 60 bpm below that, 4 out of 5 runs like that with a speed session or tempo run gently being built in
Use Body Glide in all those places where chafing can happen!

Excellent similar to my journey. Parkrun saved me and just run as you say. Biggest thing for me were the right running shoes…

you just have to love a labrador 🐾
“Eat so you can run.” I love this! 😊

Thank you for this
Thank you guys for the informative content on keeping fit and keep it up throughout 2025...HNY!!
Happy new year!
Run 5 minutes walk 1 wow 👍💯
Me too i will start
Good luck!
Get a Garmin watch asap is my tip
Patient, your heart and lungs will be stronger much faster than your legs. Strength training, cross training to avoid injuries.
This is such a South African reference.... But he sounds like he should be a Top Billing Presenter... 😂😂❤
I run every morning
1: The 10% rule when adding mileage.
2: The 80% 20% principle when including speed work.
3: Have running trainers & not casual trainers.
Huge miss on the list: learn the proper technique. I got so many injuries when I (re)started (20 years after high school). I hurt myself in various ways and I wish I’d learned the proper technique and corrected mistakes early on
This could be all 10 tips. Most other things don’t matter if you have very bad form.
ok, but how to start swimming?
Wrong. I run so I can eat 😅
I wish I could, but im 225lbs
You can.
I was 222 when I started, 3 years ago. I could only jog 45 seconds every 10 minutes. Once you get started you can go a long way!
So you're just slightly heavier than me. I can run despite my weight.
I believe you can 👍

I “ran” 3 marathons & ran dozens of shorter races. Completed all of them. Didn’t “run” in any of them. Walked them the whole time. I’m a runner 🙄

The only thing you need is discipline.
🤣😂 It does not feel good running. It feels like crap.
