    Another great episode! I do something similar with my First Day Covers. I mount them in an album with a picture of the house they are addressed to. Occasionally, I will even send the first day cover back to the address it is addressed to with a note stating, "this belongs here."

    Graham, great video as usual. Atlantic City is special to me. I grew up in Philadelphia and spent summers in AC during the 50's and honeymooned there in 1966. We went to Steel Pier then and saw the diving horse and Diana Ross and the Supremes. I collect both stamps and post cards. I have over 1000 postcards from AC and another 1000 or so from Philly. If you decide to do another one of these, try Philadelphia. Lots of old postcards of City Hall, Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Betsy Ross House, etc. Keep up your fine work; we enjoy and appreciate it.

      Oh wow! Atlantic City really is a special place for you. You must thoroughly enjoy going through those 1000 AC postcards, I'm impressed. I hadn't thought about Philly as a postcard spot, I'll have to check it out. Thanks so much for watching 😊

    My niece and her husband got married in Cody Wyoming. Basically Cody is a town that was created for the purpose of Tourism, so a lot of postcards. There's an iconic postcard shot of Main Street in Cody. This shot has been taken many times over the years so you can actually collect a series of the exact same shot showing the historic changes over time including such things as the facades of the buildings, the pavement of the street and the changes in transportation showing horses to cars of different eras. I managed to collect about eight shots from the same perspective showing over 80 years of change. I mounted them in two vertical frames and presented them as a wedding gift. They now hang on either side of their fire place in their Cody. Wyoming home. Just like postage stamps, postcards are truly primary source documents of historic study.

    • @ExploringStamps
      @ExploringStamps  2 роки тому +1

      What a wonderful wedding gift. A history of a place that is special to you, presented through postcards. 😊 That is such a great idea. And you are totally right, sometimes the only images I can find of a place in the past are postcards. Thanks so much for sharing, James.

    Wow. You killed it with this video. What a fascinating angle on Philately. Were post cards the original social media? The message is limited by the size of the card! The message was often “wish you were here” living this incredible life I live. Lol. And, and of course, a quick thinking of you message.

    • @ExploringStamps
      @ExploringStamps  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you Tyler 😊 🙏 YES I totally agree! The original Facebook or Instagram posts were definitely postcards. “Look at me, I’m in this cool place, life is fab! wish you were here.. okay bye” 😂. I do a similar thing to this with Pennsylvania amusement parks. I'll take vintage postcards and see if I can match the location and view on the postcard with the actual place and then I take a photo with them superimposed because generally the location has changed significantly. It's just fun trying to look at how much things have changed.

    • @ExploringStamps
      @ExploringStamps  2 роки тому

      Oh excellent! Its amazing how much things do change over a relatively short period of time (40-60 years for example). Vintage postcards seem to sometimes be the only documentation I can find of what a place once looked like. Thanks so much for watching 😊

Never tried salt water taffy, nor have I seen a boardwalk rolling chair, nor horse diving 😮. It’s so fun to read the messages from the passed (had to look up what she meant by ‘the boardwalk is thronged’… also “Gee oh Gee” it’s the 1800s version of “Oh Em Gee” 🤣) All of the old footage is also excellent! Super enjoyable!

    OMG, Graham! I cannot fathom why you and Laura are not producing full episode programs for television/cable. You are an excellent storytelling team! Well done. Again.
    I love old postcards and reading the messages. I think of those people long gone that wrote messages to their friends and family. These bits of paper in collections are possibly the last bits of proof that "Irene" or Helen" ever existed. And I love the silent movie references! Silent movies are one of my passions for very similar reasons. Sometimes I focus on the extras that mill about crowd scenes and wonder about their lives and why they ended up in the movie and is this the only images that survive of them?
    I know you will keep up the great and important work you are doing!

I've been collecting old post cards from Durban and Natal for a couple of years, not just to see something of it's history and how it looked in my fathers time - he was born there in 1925 - but also to see how people communiated back in those days. Provides a stark contrast between then and the instant communications we have now. I've just started getting interested in collecting stamps from the Natal colonial period. I'll be checking our a lot more of your videos I think. Very interesting indeed.

    Like or Dislike: Like. Masterpiece. The diving horse was disturbing, and I would wager #chess is a more popular boardgame than #Monopoly, but the deviation from conventional philatelic content to explore postcards is refreshing.

    Been 30 years for me since being on AC's Boardwalk (when I bumped into Cousin' Brucie), so this episode just may be my new favourite episode on your wonderful channel, Graham and Laura. Although I'm still on the hunt for that 1993 Toronto stamp! Incidentally, there's a Beatles story in AC as well. Cheers!

    I collect postcards and didn't know term deltiology. Was it hard or expensive to find the AC postcards? I bought a lot of 1,000 postcards and no idea what I get except for a few 100 shown that not until after I bought it I saw landmarks I was collecting! Will let you know if I find any AC.

    • @ExploringStamps
      @ExploringStamps  2 роки тому +1

      It wasn't hard finding them, and the prices ranged from $1 to about $12 each... for some reason the unused miss america cards were the most expensive ($30 for the pair)...but that was the exception. Enjoy working through that lot! Wow a thousand is going to keep you busy.

    Hi I found my dad's old postcards how should I keep them in good condition and do they worth something

    • @ExploringStamps
      @ExploringStamps  2 роки тому +1

      Awesome! You can look after them by either getting postcard sleeves or albums (make sure they are archive safe). You can try find the postcards online by using Google Lens, some folks find that it works to find a postcard on ebay or elsewhere and inform them of the prices.

    • @ExploringStamps

      Taffy is different and more common in the US. The difference (apparently) is that Taffy has a soft and chewy texture while toffee is usually harder than taffy but also chewy. There are more differences with the ingredients as well.

      True story: In the early 1980s I was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. A Navy buddy booked flights to Charleston, WV to get to his home in Ohio. Only near the last minute did he discover that the travel agent had booked him to Charleston, SC! So glad we can now do our own booking online and make more mistakes faster. 🙃😃
