• the best how to paint ...
this guys not a professional painter but his video is still probably the best online that I've seen.
Good for do it yourselfers
i used the technique with the black line to get a straight line an it worked muuuuch better than with tape!.. thank you so much.... and i used nearly the same green color because i liked it so much ;)
this is the best how-to-paint-video on youtube!!! thanks for sharing your knowledge :)
THANK YOU for this video! The tips you give in this and the video on how to prep have improved my results 100% The best things I learned were how to load the roller properly, how to apply the paint properly, how to use the 5 in 1 tool to make a line to trim at the ceiling (my room actually looks GOOD now, and it's a high-contrast colour!), and I love the 2 to 4 extension pole I just bought, which doesn't collapse when you use it like my old one did. Thank you for making this video!
These are the best how-to painting videos on UA-cam. Thank you!
Randall,
Another great vid bro! Take it from someone who has been doing this for over 30 years. Even though I mainly do the decorative end and murals now I am glad to see you following us old pros into the business. Great trick with the Five In One, and I have a few I would like to pass on to you by sending you a free copy of my Basic Painting DVD just send an email with your info
im painting my house tomorrow, very good instructions this video is very helpful!
Cutting-in is the part I love most. I only mask off baseboard (skirting board in the UK) if they aren't going to be painted later, and I cover them with strips of old newspaper as I mask up. I carry a damp cloth to wipe drips and spills as they happen and I use new brushes for dusting only, til they have worn in and all lose bristles have gone from them. Preparation is paramount because poor prep leads to a poor finish. Check paint batch codes if buying several cans, and buy quality paint.
for the edges, i recommend to do some paint half inch under or next to the edge and be able to stay as much as possible concentrated on the line.
thank you for the info. good luck in your business
I agree with greenapple, honestly using tape is better then trying to cut-in everything using freehand method. No one I know can do it perfect and people get impatient and make mistakes, drips, roller bumps. Using tape is faster and easier.
yeah, I find it hard to paint behind the toilet with it! I got an old golf bag and carry a variety of rollers, that way I can have my paint caddy just hand me the right pole for the wall! (As if!)! but you are right, different situations call for different tools. Speaking of how to paint videos, I was a video producer who was hired to produce a video called "Paint your Way to Financial Freedom". That's how I learned enough to start and run a company for several years!
great personality and presentation!!!....good video
Beautiful. Best painting vid I've seen yet.
Thanks so much for this!! Excellent instructions. I am almost EXCITED to paint...almost. Thanks again!!!!
Nice Job!
I've never seen that technique with the putty knife to define the line from ceiling to wall
just do it freestyle!!
THANKS! another painter out of work because of this video...
Many thanks for enlightening me bro! Well done sir!
You use different methods than I would, but you got really good results in the end for sure.
When I come back trim paint is dry enough for yellow frog tape. On baseboard I run tape onto wall maybe 1/16th of an inch. I than take white trim paint and with a very dry brush I go over top edge of tape with dry white paint to seal top edge. Its dries within a few minutes. I than take another brush and use the wall color and brush over the top of tape and feather out my wall cutin. After 5 minutes I come back again and re cutin with wall color and after a few minutes I remove tape. Result a perfect crisp white line between wall and white trim. Same steps for sides of white trim around doors and windows. Crisp white lines between wall and window and door trim. Now 2nd step.
Thanks, Ray! Awesome video!!
@Mr93z32 If you're painting flat you usually don't have to prime, I always paint two coats, so unless you're doing a bright red or orange you probably won't need to prime. Ask the paint retailer if that specific color needs a primer.
Use a caulk that is close to stain color. Most stain is oak, walnut ect. Just use a colored caulk similar to stain color. Tape off trim and baseboards. Apply a very thin bead of the brown colored caulk where trim meets wall. Let dry about 10 minutes. Then cut in your wall trim lines with wall color. The caulk will seal the edge of the tape to avoid bleed thru. Work quickly and use fans. Remove tape before paint fully drys. Result perfct crisp lines. Even if a little bit of caulk bleeds thru tape it is so close to color of trim that it is virtually invisible and the results are fantastic.
You are the only one who explained that well enough to understand
Solid wee video again mate!
starting mine dining room thanks for the tips
Good Video! A couple of tips... the tape is 3M 2020 and do not use it on the drywall, but it is perfect for the semi-gloss trim. Use the same color paint you are taping over or kilz clear primer to seal it. When you prime your patches use a roller with some texture to match the wall otherwise you will have a smooth spot. Instead of brushing around outlets, have a 4 inch roller handy. You will also use it where the big rollers wont go. Have fun!
I tape ceiling too , its just annoying after a while to keep ur hands up
great video dude, i was just looking for a proper way to roll
PS i found the hard way when its time to pull the tape out :)
Thanks, I'm glad I could help. I agree about the camera angle.
@kallstarify Thanks, I know not every painter, paints in the exact same way (most don't tape doors edges). The video is mostly just things I had to be reminded of when I was an apprentice. Someone had to represent "the real Pros" I'm glad to hear you approve.
The 5 in 1 is used lightly just to "mark" the wall not to make a crack or damage the wall.
I use 18" rollers for large ceilings and vaulted foyers/stairways and they work great! . For everyday use the are not in my tool bag. If you are doing any areas like bathrooms, kitchens, or any areas with less than 24" inches of wall space like hallways with lots of doors they are pointless.
@champ3660 Get a 5 in 1 tool when cleaning those rollers too. It will keep you from wasting all of that paint.
Brilliant thanks!
@frank0067 the best place is somewhere where you or anyone else wont trip over it and wherever it feels most comfortible for you i personaly place it too my left and just push it with my foot as i move now granted i only fill it 1/4 of the way as not to spill any
I learned a lot from this vid'...much appreciated...!!!
what's the advantage of removing tape while paint is wet as opposed to dry?
@ruel68ify if your using the same color just paint right over it only prime if your going from a light to dark or oil to water
great vid!
I LOVED THIS VIDEO! Question--should I put two layers for walls in my house? I'm a total newbie to painting.
good advice... thanks!
Do I have to retape between coats of paint?
White trim and white baseboards followed by painting walls. This is a repaint info not info for new construction which is far different than repaints. Repainting is far more difficult and time consuming than new construction painting. After prep work on walls and caulking of all white trim ect I paint my trim first. I apply trim paint and run it up onto the wall a bit. Let it dry for a bit and than apply 2nd coat on trim. By this time I have all prep work done, sanding of walls, spackling ect and cleaning of walls with TSP. I spot prime all spackling with flat white or primer.I THAN GO HOME AND LET TRIM DRY FOR 2 DAYS.
Behr and Benjamin Moore are on the same level according to Consumer Reports. Behr is much cheaper on interior paints and a little cheaper and better in my opinion when it comes to exterior paints.
Best tape is green like Kermit. Tho i don't use it around for trimming . To much time putting it on and the cost as well. Just trim it with out tape you'll save time and money. Also your line i this tutorial look like beach waves. Good tips on rolling tho. Keep up the good work kid.
Why not tape an inch of the ceiling if it's SO dreaded??
So you don't need a accubrush or something ? Wow! This is a amazing tutorial how to paint.... Thank you, I'm painting sometimes but thus is the bomb
I wish I saw your videos before painting my room
Unless you are painting the same color and same sheen, I would advise two coats.
what colour did you use to paint the room in this video?
Tinkerbelle's Knickers for 3 walls and the accent wall is Flattened Kermit .....they are on most color charts.
@milo555a Thanks! I've seen a lot of those other vids from "pros" too, and they are usually pretty awful. Although I must say it's not easy trying to show/teach everything in ten minutes.
ruel68ify no don't paint it white. Just put on another coat
Nice one. Thanks. (Just ignore the "I know better Joe's")
Hahaha like Jesus walking on water, good color
We don't use trays cause they're messy and have to be filled too many times. We also don't use tape, as a good brush can cut in easily. This is okay, but not the best technique.
its ok ,could do better ,yes we cut around electrical outlets .
Tape!! Oh dear.
at least hes using promar 200 and not 400...
I am disappointed, I thought you were going to show us how to paint video! ("how to paint video!! pt 2. Like a pro ") man, that's gotta be hard. I bet you use a really tiny little brush, huh? .) oh, plus I got another use for the tape, put it over the mouth of the guy behind you telling you 'you missed a spot"
This guy gets paid to paint, i think he's ok in how to do it. ..although the instructional videos are shit with that dumb, intrusive music... cant hear him talk.
Not everyone has access to paint sprayers... too expensive and a pain to set up. Get real.
Great paint job! Your instructions were thorough and easy to follow. I believe in masking a trim work as well. It definitely takes the worry factor out of the equation!
Nice Work!
As for ceilings my trick is as follows. I always run 2 beads of caulk between wall and ceiling due to the use of knockdown textures now used on most homes in Kansas. I caulk it and then remove it and it leaves a perfect line. I than cutin as usual.....results!!!!!!...........perfect straight line with no shadowing marks left by over applied knockdown material.....
Can you explain this a little easier?
Fishingtuts I think he uses masking tape and then caulks the edge of that on the side that is in the corner. Once the tape is removed there is a straight line. I have seen this done but not tried it myself.
2nd step...painting walls.....I cut in around all wall and ceilings, cutin again around all trim and basebaors and leave a light feathered edge right next to trim and baseboards. After cutins are all done and dry I then go around and tape off baseboard again but remember you don't have to be exact...just lightly tape off to avoid splattering from roller. I roll my walls with first coat. I than apply 2nd coat to all cutins and walls.........Results perfect paint job with crisp straight lines each and every time and it really doesn't take that much more time once you get used to it. I care about quality and not my final pay. That will work out over time as more people are satisfied with your work and are willing to pay for the extra detail and time. As for stained trim this is how I handle that.
@champ3660 if you're only painting a 4'x4' area a whizzee roller would be the best tool to use. Usually if the paint isn't going on smoothly you don't have enough paint on the roller. It sounds like, by the time your roller had enough paint you were out of paint.
Good video. Im Dave a painter in Kansas. Some people in here say they are pro painters and don't need tape ect and can do it all free hand. Sometimes yes it can work but other times it cant. The trick is always visual. White baseboards need small line of white paint up onto wall. White trim around windows and doors need small line of wall paint onto side of trim. No exceptions!.....Some pro painters think they are doing good but if you look really close a line is never straight. My trick is as follows and yes painters it does take more time and your pay is less but the results are always outstanding!...Keep reading for info.
I can cut lines straighter with a brush better and faster than anyone can with tape. Period.
To all of you complaining about me using tape, get over it. You cannot cut as straight as when you use tape and it's faster. That's a fact. Get over your ego. This is for homeowners who want the best results, not pros.
Exactly, we can all cut in perfectly if we want to, but it's pure ego. Let's make it easier on ourselves. If you're doing more than one coat, use tape. That's at least two sets of fearless painting you give yourself as well as the best possible finish. Maybe the most noise is coming from those lazy painters who only cut in once for a two-coat job. Hence, of course it's probably faster to cut in by hand.
a Wool roller doesn't shed, at all. it also doesn't drip, throw paint, leave lines, or have any of the issues of other rollers. I use a 1/2" nap (for a smoother finish I backroll (1-stroke) with a 3/8 roller (dry), it is far faster and provides better coverage (& you don't need a dropcloth except for show). The Wooster Wool roller is far, far superior. Check out Woosters' guide to rollers, good stuff there. Most painters who try the wool roller don't use anything else ever again. Peace .)
I don't know if you have a dulux paint store where you live, but they sell brushes there that are far superior to any of the 5-10 Purdy brushes I've tried in the past, expensive brushes don't make you a better painter took me years in the trade to learn that. And if you want to break in your brushes do it on your trim with some semi gloss or eggshell, if you have any loose hairs they will come out quick since it'll be a white base paint and very thick.
I think you have dismissed the 18" 'Big Boy' roller without perhaps really experiencing the advantages. The concerns about turning it this way or that, being 'lefty', pooling paint on the frame or pulling it out of the tray all go away with the Big Boy, and the now wall would be painted easier, faster and better. No brushing under the outlet, with the Big Boy you can cut the outlet tight, roll under it & be done and on to the next wall. You are good, with the Big Boy You will be Great! Respect.
Here's another tip that workds better than wiping your brush against the edge of yor paint bucket. Get a 1-gallon size metal grid and put it in your paint can, bending the two hooks over the edge to hold it in a vertical position. Then when you dip your brush, lightly slap it against the grid. It takes the excess paint off the brush and leaves the bristles & pait uniformly spaced, & it avoids common problems with the 'wipe' such as compressing the bristles & pushing paint deeper into the brush
Good video, but guys, c;mon! Those one-arm roller frames suck! It puts uneven pressure on the wall & tends to leave a little line of thicker paint on the open side, it also pushes paint to the pressure side & drips. Get an 18" roller frame that grabs from both ends, it's faster ('cause it's longer!) and puts a more consistent layer of paint down. Use a Wooster lambskin (wool) roller cover once & you will never use anything else, they don't drip, run, splatter or put paint anywhere but the wall.
Hey so how come my paint doesn't go on as smooth as yours? I'm using a 1/2" nap roller cover by purdy. However when i applied paint on it didn't go on fully. Its only a pint for color sample, i didn't know whether to use a brush or roller, i figured roller would go on easier, but i ran out of paint for a second coat, even though i was supposed to have enough for a second coat, I painted an 4x4 ft area, however when i cleaned my roller sooo much paint came off, it filled half a pint can. so idk
I usually use a three or four inch brush for dusting. I also use new brushes as dusting brushes for a period of time to ensure all the loose hairs have finished coming out. As for brand I have used Harris brushes, Purdy brushes, or Hamilton, with pure china bristle and chisel edge if I can get them. I always buy the most expensive I can afford.
Great tip about loading the roller. I've only painted a couple of rooms in my day but I'm getting ready to paint several rooms in my house. Always had problems being sloppy with paint all over the roller and with using those cheap edging tools but I'm sure your tips and tricks will help. Thx man!
You need a wireless mic for your lapel.
The present system you have is terrible; you sound like you are in a well.
You can here yourself clearly on play back of the video, but other people who don't know what your going to say have to listen very carefully to catch what you say, with all that echo.
Like he said in the video. Blue tape leaks more. Even the Frog Tape. That one is a fraud if you ask me. I use yellow tape for almost everything and it works like a champ and Randall showed nicely how to do it.
im a real estate broker with the market in the dumps ..i have to branch out and start doing contractor work to survive. thanks for the video randell it came in very handy for my 1st job!..from brooklyn ny. jobless broker.
i noticed you paint from right to left ok if your left handed as you are .
and in the uk we use square scuttles not trays as these are considered diy
nice tip for the 5 in 1 tool
great video
foxey tradman in uk
Could you comment on paint quality please. I am guessing that paint found at Home Depot, Lowe's, etc, is not a good quality paint. Would you say Benjamin Moore is? Give us some recommendations on other brands.
Right on! Best "how to video" I've seen. Great instruction and to the point. I have an attic apartment I'm painting this week. Hopefully, I'll do ok for it being my first time, lol. Thanks for posting ;)
Quick question: Why do you cut first? wouldn't it be better to roll, then cut while that first coat dries? You are the pro... I am just curious. Thanks in advance for any feedback.
Seriously complaining about the tape...Ive seen pros use blue tape...Ive used blue tape and will continue to use blue tape. The video is great for people who want to do the job themselves.
@mypinkkconverse what i would do is re paint it using the same color but mix some brown or black into it and test it and keep mixing and testing till you get the desired look
this video is to goofy,,,,NOT PRO @ ALL,,,,,,,,,,,,this advice is from a an old caveman painter,,,,,,,,,OLD SCHOOL,,,,,,,,,,,,WE USE MUCH BETTER WAYS OF ACHIEVING A " FAST.PERFECT JOB "
Usually not. The second coat will soften the first one so you can still pull the tape of without tearing the paint off as long as you pull it while the paint is still wet.
I really should have watched this BEFORE I started painting! Oh well, next time I won't screw everything up - thanks tons for sharing your knowledge
I really should have watched this BEFORE I started painting! Oh well, next time I won't screw everything up - thanks tons for sharing your knowledge
I had a helper who used to do that. His brush was full to the handle in 10 minutes while mine, with Randall's technique, last all day long.
blue tape does work, but you have to buy the good stuff, which is high dollar.not all blue tape is the same, even though it may look like it.
thanx for the video i will be using your help ro decorate my house.. thank you so much. keep up the good work.. o owe you a pint
@SILVERADO06SS1 haha same and i am a painter by trade i always do the top to bottom with a 25%overlap to lay off rollermarks
I can't find the Tips for Homeowners tab on the GoGreenApple website...
Still not pro!!! Using tape for cutting lines... , and if you do with a tape, it has too be frog tape...
Excellent video and tips, many thanks, you explained and demonstrated techniques so well. Great lessons.
When the paint is dry you are very likely to pull the paint off with the tape and mess up your edge
Blue tape does not work.....next shot....using blue tape.
Great video though, thanks for the help!
If you can piss you can paint
oldproji what dust brush do you use ie. width, brand, type of bristles etc thanks for your help.
i had to stop watching after i saw the roller tray! and pouring from the front of the can......
nice whats your estimate for a job like that??
Instead of mixing two or more gallons of paint to get a uniform color why not paint a few small samples and compare them to see if mixing is even needed?
Frank Blangeard because it would be hard to tell with only a patch and you'd spend four hours waiting for paint to dry.
