"Loid says the Citrine Story is 'sentimental fiction', I guess Loid forgot we got invaded by the sentiments 😏" my favorite line from this entire ordeal
I think this is the first time I've heard such a heavily romanticized version of Hou Yi and Chang Ye's story. The story I read from the picture book when I was younger had Hou Yi getting tricked by a neighbor after he got the immortality pills into thinking that Chang Ye cheated on him. Afterwards he beat and yelled at her causing her to become depressed and tried to unlife herself by taking the bottle of immortality pills marked as poison. Hou Yi only realizes his mistake in the end as Chang Ye floats all the way to the moon to live with the moon rabbit who makes mooncakes. Your version is much happier.
The theme of love and tragedy in the Belric's and Rania's amused through and through. The stories you read are very beautiful excecuted and quite similar to the bridge between Rania and Belric. Well done Tenno, for being the lore reader with philosophical and mythical mix to it which made it unique. I will eager to listen to your next lore video. Stay true Tenno
Superb video. "when strong emotions meet the void, it can change reality" that is the duviri emperor in a nutshell, i would not discard it relating to self harm, i would say the emperor is the own drifter, tormenting himself. Those stories told with warframe probably took forever to do, but damn it is beautiful. land of lustrous is a good anime, the part about breaking but always going back to self is incredible, also the part where trying to put other people in you, changes you forever. the design is always one thing, we know the costumers wants pretty things, so it is one reason for it, i played a lot of equinox and that gender problem always haunted me. I really wish this was more to equinox than citrine, about lovers trying to become one, but only being able to meet temporary, it would make a lot of sense for the mirror defense in one side giving day and the other night form.
That is one of the struggles I have been facing, because I want to do videos on each of the Warframes with a backstory like that. Maybe try to make the Machinemas for those as well. (Also just finished a re-read of Houseki no Kuni, and by God the manga ending is so heart-wrenching.)
@@SocraTetris if you ever do the warframes, maybe nidus prime can be a good start, i really like the aesthetics of a very well build frame that was given an infested hand, where the infestation takes over as it gets stronger, showing that power corrupts, that power march forward not caring what at front (1), that it can collect the enemies at one spot with tricky tactics (2), can use other as shield or as ally (3), can create an stronghold to strength his own (4) and even on face of defeat, it will sacrifice part of itself to preserve the whole (passive).
It took a lot of time, but I'm glad I did too. I very purposefully chose Ivara to play both the man and woman roles in the Chang'e story, and chose Grendel because I wanted one of the less represented body types in the game to be the love interest. I love this video so much. Your voice is very pleasant, especially when storytelling. Warframe is my favorite game of all time and i love to hear people talking about lore, especially side stuff like this.
My only... 'issue' with this pertains to the commentary on warframes and gender near the end. The issue I have is that warframes canonically have a gender as assigned by the dev team's choices on their lore and origin. Equinox is made up of two parts, and the theme may imply male/female dichotomy, but if the developers say 'it's a female warframe' (which they have), then I'm sorry, it's 100% female. its their decision what each frame once was, and how to identify it post warframe transformation. They were human, and while their bodies were altered, they still have a sense of self, so their still 'people' in some sense. So again, it's the development team's decision how to refer to fictional, conceptual beings in their own universe.
I mean, I kind of see your point, because I think that you are coming at this from a perspective of affirming gender identities, which I agree with whole heartedly and vigorously. While the stories that I covered were quite heteronormative, I tried to express through color theory and that final critique on the inconsistent representation of sex/gender that the themes of love and family are just as valid for queer kinds of romance/friendship/family as any other. As well as for any body type. (Especially given that within the text, no Warframe is able to communicate who they were or how they identified before being transformed.) So as a point of analysis, however, taking some statements of some people at DE as a sort of "Word of God" analysis approach isn't productive imo. For one, there is the Death of the Author concept. Anyone there can say what they want at some point, but how it impacts an audience matters regardless. For two, if writers/designers at DE pull from existing cultural inspirations, it isn't really theirs to limit nor sequester. Equinox pulls from Yin-Yang imagery explicitly, which is itself about dualist concepts having a monist relationship. (Which i go over in my original Warframe lore video). One of those dualities in Yin-Yang is explicitly male/female or man/woman as a duality or spectrum depending on interpretation. Third is that games, as collective creations of a team of people, could have someone making a public statement of "This thing is X," while someone else on the team responsible for part of the design was thinking, "This thing is Y." So even a public/official declaration of something like this isn't the sole authority, if anyone else in the writers' room thinks differently without having a voice in the PR or marketing side of the company.
@@SocraTetris Entirely fair. I don't disagree with any of this. It may be more to do with how I interpreted what you said at the end than you're actual meaning. It felt somewhat reductive to me, but I know you also had commented earlier in the video on the same- or, well, very similar context. All in all, a great video. Just a small critique on how I interpreted your phrasing I suppose. Thanks for taking the time to clarify.
All good! Thank you for giving me the opportunity. It was a word that I wrestled with a lot, because i try not to apply hermeneutics too much, focus on receiving what is expressed in-game. I personally found the entrati sections and especially Albrecht Entrati logs interesting. If possible would this be worked on? Since the entrati family are such an interesting group in my eyes. Thank you
So in this video, some of the deimos stuff is there. I'm not exactly sure where to put the Heart of Deimos on the playlist. But it is definitely not off the table
That's a great idea actually! I may very well do that as some bonus vids, like how i separated out Dispute Between A Man and His Ba from The New War video
Wish we could get a frame that is "new". Every Warframe we have is from around or before the Old War, rediscovered. I'd like a quest involving someone trying to create a new Warframe that we would need to do battle with, probably in its Prime form and upon it's defeat we could get either basic blueprints for the regular frame or it's Prime version. It would be something different.
We do kind of have that as a concept right now. Though Primes have been retconned not to be their original versions, but more like void-exposed powered up versions. Valkyr is the first that comes to mind, as her original Warframe form is the result of Alad V's experimentation/torture. She was an entirely different warframe which we do not have access to before that. Nidus may also count, as a sort of warframe grown from the infested directly. Xaku may also fit this category, and they are 3 warframe corpses combined and animated by eidolon ghost energy. From a lote perspective, creating a new warframe seems like the most immoral thing a person can do. And Entrati may have done just that in 1999 but creating Cyte-09's protoframe. we'll just have to see if that is also the origin of Cyte-09's warframe in current year.
So, to be clear, the dividing line is the Old War, or, more likely, after the collapse of the Orokin Empire? Because we have multiple that were created during the collapse era(the period after the Night of the Naga Drums, when almost all Orokin were murdered by us), and arguably a few that happened after the Tenno reawakened. During the collapse: Revenant(the Warden was Orokin made, the Revenant though only happened after Gara's sacrifice, and that was during the collapse), Koumai(only arrived from the sea after the Warden vanished), Yarelli(she fought a slave driver, though I suppose it could have been during the Orokin Empire, except they had the Grineer and therefore no need for slave children), Xatu(their component warframes were Orokin made and each were eventually lost to the void, but their reformation into a new one is post collapse), and Stynax(explicitly mentioned to be a recent event). Meanwhile Limbo, Chroma, Banshee, Zephyr, Wukong, Barruk, Hyldrin, Guadra, Hydroid, Mesa, Nekros, Oberon, Vaubon, Wisp, and Equinox have no information relating to their origin. So, arguably, Zephyr and Mesa, which were fan made, could be considered new(as they were made by Tenno post revival) and Banshee/Wukong are also created in the Tenno lab as well. Chroma also was one under the control of the Infestation, and Guarda was just inside a mushroom...
37 minutes flew by, this was such a great video! The last bit was particularly interesting, Warframe's challenging of gender norms is sparsely talked about
That's a part where I am stuck. I have no idea if or how much it is trying to challenge gender norms. There have absolutely been sparse attempts, but its also not a consistent theme. Lol, regardless, there's something there!
nah, just check it out. Horror Games have some of the most chill, beautiful music in gaming. It's that juxtaposition. Horror games use music to give players a sense of calm after the intense moments. So the soundtracks are amazing.
nah, he's dead. Think of the system chart as a timeline. This takes place kn Mars, so it is earlier in the timeline, from a new player perspective, than the assassination on Uranus
this is really cool but i came here more for the actual lore of the mission - why did belric and rania infect deimos? how was citrine created and why is she so attached to them?
We don't have that information, as it isnt presented in game. Thr story is incomplete, because none of tje charactere telling thr story were present for the events. So all we can do is speculate
@SocraTetris ah I see, that's really disappointing. Like I said, I still really enjoyed the video - even if it wasn't what I expected. Thank you very much!!!
Somewhere it says they infected Deimos during the Old War to prevent the sentients from taking over it as a strategic base. As for why Citrine... yeah we have nothing on her other than "existed".
Just wanted to say that xaku is several people in one hence they them pronouns. Equinox is specifically embodying the anima and animis. Animus as the unconscious masculine side of a woman and anima vice versa. Ergo Equinox isn't properly trans. Caliban was just built as a male like jenny xj9 from my life as a teenage robot is built a teenager.
I've received this feedback before about DE's official stances on equinox's gender. My personal take is that, since they draw from the concept of YinYang for equinox's design, the cultural history behind the desigm takes precedent over authorial intent. I dont think there is a "properly trans" standard by which to judge equinox's gender, as the very concept of gender fluidity and degrees of gender is built into the idea of how much Yin or Yang is makes up the person. Equinox literally transitions gender, that's enough for my case. As for Caliban, that was kind of a cheeky joke. But fun fact for warframe lore that people miss. The males of their society are the ones who have wombs and produce children (before the void renders them infertile). Pazuul explicitly says "my father's womb" and natah and hunhow refer to his ability to have children along those lines too. Praghasa is the mother, but mother means something different in their culture. So what does this say for Lotus? One could reason that she is a trans allegory as well. As a Sentient Mimic, was she a male that lost his womb in sentient cultural standards? Was she female as a sentient, and thus lack a womb even before the void infertility? Did she, a male sentient, transition to the gender of a woman in the human/orokin society, so as to embrace the identity of mother-figure? All good questions to ask
You seem to be missing the part where Warframe is a thing made by people that expresses ideas. Warframes aren't real, so the reality of "humans have genders" wasn't the point of critique. It is how gender is used to construct that lore which is the point of critique. Which I expressed explictly in the text of the video. You are welcome to review that section, now that you understand that I am not criticizing the existence of gender.
Equinox is also two separate bodies fused together by forma, so if you think Ballas, and orokin in general, would impregnate a warframe but not create a hybrid out of a man and a woman... _They had flesh gardens,_ why do we assume that this of all things is a step too far? Especially in relation to the duality warframe explicitly focused on day/night which has been gendered male/female for centuries now... also, the Worm Queen was going to transfer herself into my male Tenno body, and Executor Truvali was going to do the same with Varuna's female operator, so clearly the Orokin didn't think the borders of the sexes were uncrossible... Also, are we talking about the sex of warframes or actual gender? Because while warframes 100% have sexes, being infested humans, but the genders... its a Grey area. Obviously Excalibur Umbra is a cis man, being the original, but what of the replicants of further warframes? They probably have sexes, even though they are infested flesh, but do they even have the consciousness to have a gender at this point?
It got better when I brought up gender, because gender is a part of the game, and therefore a part of the discussion. I was discussing it from the beginning of the video in fact. A discussion of "men are from mars, women are from venus," is a discussion of cisgender as a topic, and directly referenced by the game. Please see this discomfort you feel at engaging with gender as a topic as an opportunity to examine why this one topic brings you discomfort when you have not denied any other aspect of my cultural analysis of the game.
@@SocraTetris The only reason I don't like the fact it's brought up in a video about a game in form of a critique, is because it's been so blown up lately in all kinds of media. The part about mars and venus worries me less because it has been in literature for centuries and mainly for romanticism. You criticising which warframe is which gender and who tells what about a gender felt, first of all, out of place for this kind of a video, and second (and this one is personal) i do feel like games should be free of dramas of outside world. Who cares how they are depicted, what parts they have and what the wiki names them? It's a game. We can simply accept it and move on.
@@SocraTetris And just to be clear, i do not say this in a way that is hateful or that i am angry about this or whatever else. I did enjoy the video- the storytelling and research that went into it is amazing. I thank you for making that video. All i did was voice my concern for I don't want to see a beloved game of mine succumb to the politics of the real world.
Well in fact the mars and venus thing as gendered concepts is only a very recent thing. that late 90s 2000s book i mentioned. For example. the god of war had different genders between hellenist greeks and the roman empire. Gender is not political, it is a part of humanity, a part of our minds and lived experiences. Discussing gender is not political. You games have gender in them so long as they depict people. Trying to regulate and censor discussion of gender or depiction of non-cis genders is political. Your comment is in service of making real people excluded from being recognized. My video is not political, but I think you do have some hatred for this topic. Else you wouldnt have told me to censor myself or become irritated with me for saying something about gender. The moment warframe used the terms women and men, the game itself talked about gender. It's a normal part of life.

I saved the voidtongue diary until right before running WitW. It doubled my immersion
i didnt realize the were translations for the voidtongue yet! i only know tha Lohk means Void, but i couldnt find the others
Excellent as usual!
Glad you enjoyed it, Allire!
What version of claire de lune did you put on the video??
the evil within original soundtrack version
@@SocraTetris Bruh i was about to vibe to it now that i know it's a horror version it kinda creeps me out😭😭😭
nah, just check it out. Horror Games have some of the most chill, beautiful music in gaming. It's that juxtaposition. Horror games use music to give players a sense of calm after the intense moments. So the soundtracks are amazing.
So, Tyl Regor is not dead?
nah, he's dead.
Glad you liked it Warblenoise!
Somewhere it says they infected Deimos during the Old War to prevent the sentients from taking over it as a strategic base.
As for why Citrine... yeah we have nothing on her other than "existed".
OMG LAND OF THE LUSTROUS
Everypne must remember that warframe is basically an anime now.
Nice more lore vids
B) You know it
It's not warframe gender norm. It's warframe lore. Warframes used to be humans. Humans have genders.
Everything was good until you brought gender into discussion. Please let the game be a game
Heck, discussion of gender is centuries old. Aristophanes wrote plays and gave speeches at seminar about it.
