So glad she’s okay. I just saw a video of a girl with a terminal muscular illness saying she would rather die at home than in the hospital, where she had spent most of her life. Afterwards, I saw a video of a girl with end stage brain cancer die in her mom’s arms. So glad to see a story with a happy ending. And this is NOT an ending - this girl is still alive and getting back to normal.
The spinal cord is like a mini brain. It can learn stuff and perform a lot of tasks without the brain's help. Just like you can get a stroke in your brain (blockage of blood vessels), you can also get a stroke of the spinal cord. Often times, spinal cord strokes can occur when blood supply is cut off due to an injury or trauma of some sort, which is what I am assuming happened here, due to the fact that she was doing gymnastics when it occurred. Her stroke likely occurred in the cervical (neck) region of her spine, due to the fact that she had difficulty moving both her arms and her legs. The amazing thing about spinal cord injuries such as spinal cord strokes, bruising, swelling, and incomplete spinal cord injuries (where the spinal cord is not completely damaged, as opposed to a complete spinal cord injury), is that full or almost full recovery is very possible!!! I have a friend who had an incomplete spinal cord injury (paraplegic... from the waist down), and he is walking and running again and has two beautiful children!!! I am always amazed at the success of recovery for people with brain and spinal cord injuries. The brain and the spinal cord are amazing, and there are so many new discoveries being made today in the realm of neuroscience!!! That is why I want to become a physical therapist specializing in neuro PT!!!
Since this was published in Nov 2018, l hope their daughter is doing well. The couple's love for each other radiates out to their daughter, that she can do anything. So positive. Beautiful family. Thanks to the staff for their expertise and dedication.
It is so wonderful to see a child like Leah recovéring from a spinal cord stroke. Very uplifting. Thank you for sharing this story. May she continue to recover.
Our 13 year old son also had a spinal cord stroke only 5 months ago. He to was a talented athlete. It is a great mind set to have to take into the rehab and recovery from such an enormous injury as a spinal cord stroke. Austins was T2-T12. He is now walking and starting to get back into sport. All the best to Leah with her ongoing recovery.
I hope your daughter has continued to do well. She clearly has two wonderful parents. My 14 year old daughter just went through brain surgery in the last month, so I know how challenging these times are. But children are resilient and they can achieve great things with the right medical care and parental support!
She has such an amazing spirit, it takes an extremely strong person to be able to smile and laugh and keep your spirits up when something this tragic happens. You two are amazing parents. My childhood was spent in and out of hospitals from a super rare kidney/liver disease. I had to undergo 3 kidney transplants and 1 liver transplant. There were times after surgeries or on dialysis in between the transplants that I wanted it to just be over, My parents were a huge support system for me and I think if I wouldn't of had such amazing supportive parents I don't think I could've gotten through it. Leah is very lucky to have you two, I will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers. :-)
So glad this had a happy ending! When they said she was quadriplegic! I was shocked! Did they ever find out what caused her stroke? Was it the gymnastics? A hard landing? A shock to the sinal cord?
Oh gawd oh gawd oh gawd poor little girl! This scared me at first because I know a girl similar in looks & age with the same name as her, but then I remembered I saw her earlier today. Phew. 😅 😅 😅
I just had one these May 3 ,2023. Yes mine is very new. My only symptom was I started vomiting and my headache that I had for 3 months vanished. Doctors told me they didn’t know why I had this stroke.
What a beautiful loving family! I’m so glad your precious baby is doing better! One of our girls was also in gymnastics. She was injured and needed surgery on her neck/spine @ 12. She is now 22 in college in Toronto. No more back flips but a beautiful healthy young woman. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I have a lot of back issues also, (and my name is Leah too!) So, I understand how horrible all that is.. I wish her all the luck, and love in the world!
i had a stroke and was paralyzed byt legs down and i remember wgen i strted walking again i felt the same way as her! i thought i would never walk again
@@TinekeWilliams I think Mirzkey meant how she is doing today, almost 2 years later. Has she improved? Can she run? Hit a ball again? I wonder and hope too!
Gosh I thought my wife was young having a stroke at 28 which has left her hemiparuplegic. I think Leah is every bit as beautiful and strong as my wife. Nothing is beyond your daughter given time and the support she asks for. My wife can even thread a needle, try doing that one handed. Leah will grow up stronger than most around her with true empathy and understanding of the difficulties others have. Numerous times a day she will make you proud and you'll find yourself watching her in awe. I wish your entire family the most amazing future.
Omg i cried so bad..i wonder what caused the stroke, did she fall? Its so rare for a kid to have this happen..poor sweet baby shes so beautiful, Thank u God for saving her.
I have had 2 Strokes one was when I was 6months old and it was on my left side of my Brain and then I had a another Stroke when I was 13years old and it was on left side of my Brain and it made me blind in my right eye and made me have Seizures/Epilepsy
So sorry to hear that my friend had a grand mal seizure infront of me in high school and that was scary at the time that it happened wasn't sure about what seizures were but as a certified clinical medical assistant i know what seizures are
Hi Meagan Moore, sorry to hear that you can 2 Strokes, I will pray for you, I know what it is like to live with an illness that overtakes your life, But Jesus gave me a miracle and healed me, Jesus loves you and can do the same for you, Ask Him into your heart your heart to be your personal Lord and Saviour, and He will change your life for the better, God bless
Just so incredible that she went from being “profoundly quadriplegic” to walking, playing on the playground, and doing it all with a big smile.
