You are good. I've been looking for a project with thicker wire and had a shawl pin or hair barrette in mind to make and here you are. Thanks, 1926lady
Hey Beautiful Denise ! I know I have been gone for awhile and noticed my notifications was not working for your video's. Happy late birthday, Happy late Merry Christmas and have a very safe and happy new year. Now I have catching up to do ! Love these.
It’s great to hear from you, hope all is well and that you have a Happy New Year too. All the a Best in 2020, can’t believe it’s actually a brand new decade!
Mom is good, 2 new knees and another minor surgery in the past 2 years and we’re hoping she’s done with surgeries for a while but getting new knees changed her life in a wonderful way so it’s all good in the long run.
Wow, that’s a huge achievement, my husbands Dad just turned 90 on December 1st and we thought that was a huge milestone. Good for her., happy belated Bday to her.
This is going to sound weird , but you sound exactly like me. Even your choice of words and pronunciation. It was kinda eerie to listen to, but it was a great video. Thank you.
Hi Denise I just subscribed to your channel, this looks so fun. But since I am SO WAY NEW to this could you start with your supplies like any special hammer and is that a stainless piece that you are hammering on? Where would I get these basics?? I know silly questions but I would like to start a new HOBBY! lol like I need a new one haha! anyway I think you covered the size gauge of wires? I need a shopping list and if you have a fave place to order from vs Hob Lobby or Michael's that would be lovely! I am retired and can go into Vegas to shop but if you get your stuff online that would be even better! Thank you in advance and this is exactly what I wanted to make as I am crocheting ( mine are boho and hippie as I cannot follow a pattern to save myself, BUT I love the free form and I wanted something nice to hold up one side) so this will work perfectly! (shawl pin!!!! ) I never knew they existed until now!!!!! :) Also I sell out of a vintage store, have a booth and have made two shawls already, they are large with wooden beads and I have just found my ceramic beads I made WAY back in the day ( lololol 1968!!!) Thank you again for your great video! You explain very well to someone that is just starting out! Love it! Kat
+Kat Ritorto I can feel your excitement from here, and I completely get it. There's nothing better than finding a new hobby and I absolutely love free form, that's my preferred style too. I usually shop on line but will occasionally shop at Michaels if they have good coupons. My favorite places to buy tools and supplies are artbeads.com or beadaholique.com, I usually choose based on the best prices and they both offer percents off that you will receive alerts for if you sign up on their email list. I've made a list of my favorite tools at kit.com and provide links to Amazon so you can check out what I suggest and also the approximate prices. It's just a guide really and I suggest that you shop around to get the best prices. Here's the link. kit.com/denisemathew/getting-started-making-wire-jewelry Also I've heard that aluminum wire is good for making shawl pins(Michaels have this in a 16-18 gauge )so you might want to keep that in mind when you are looking. I used artistic wire in the tutorial but it's very stiff to work with, aluminum is much more pliable but the choice is yours. Hope this helps and thanks for all your kind words and also for subscribing, All the best in 2017, Denise
Thank you for making and sharing this video! I have liked and subscribed. I have been looking for months on how to make shawl pins and there really isn't much out there as far as tutorials go! What do you have wrapped around your pliers?
+Jennifer Roberts for a project like this where you want the piece to be very stiff a half hard is good, aluminum wire works ok too. But for most other projects dead soft is really the best all purpose wire. Keep in mind that the harder the wire, like half hard, the less wiggle room you have for bending and shaping so it's easier to snap the wire if you over work it. I have a tutorial on wire and what each type is good for projects here if you're interested ua-cam.com/video/ujuT8negdik/v-deo.html. Hope this helps. 😊
hi, what gauge is the thinner wire you used to wrap the circle together so it doesn't spread open? it looks to be about 22 but I am not sure. thank you
The stick is the straight piece that goes through the circle clip part and wire hardened means that the wire is harder than it was in the beginning and will not bend easily when you're wearing the pin. I hope this helps 😊 Denise
+Sherry Walker I like beadsmith wire, I usually get it at beadaholique.com, I also like artbeads.com designer wire, aluminum wire will work in these projects too and can be purchased inexpensively at Michaels craft store if you have one nearby. Hope this helps 😊
As long as it’s stiff and heavy enough to hold hair or a scarf it’s fine. If the wire is too flimsy it won’t keep its shape. Usually a 10-14 gauge wire is good.
+thelmarrie I think 16 gauge will be ok if you hammer it well to wire harden it, the only thing I suggest is that aluminum wire would probably be too flimsy in 16 gauge but most other types of wire should be perfectly good. Hope this helps, 😊
+Jane Thomas if you use a jewelry file, or just a regular file you should be able to get a pretty good point. To make it go quicker you can also cut the tip of the wire at an angle so it's pointed then finish it with a file. Hope this helps 😊
Once you've clipped and filed the end onto a rough point, rotate it while striking it with your hammer using a lateral drawing or pushing motion that will elongate the pin, decreasing its thickness while increasong its length.
THANK YOU!🙆🙉😸 for turning the volume while you hammered! most enjoyable hammered video for sure!!!
Have also been looking for tutorials for shawl pins - this was great ! Thanks!
Simple and beautiful Denise, thank you! Getting ready to make some for the holidays.
Thank you, perfect for the shawls I am making. Great video.
Just bought myself some craft wire on Amazon! Can never find anything to secure my thick hair! Thanks so much for teaching me how to make my own!
Awesome wire wrapping technique!

@@DeniseMathew Freaking hell, I know..the years are flying by. Young people who are wasting their youth have no clue at all. How is your mom ?

@@DeniseMathew So crazy what they can do now. Very happy to hear she is doing great. My mama turned 95 on the 13th.

+Rio DJeNIRO I'm hoping to have another one similar to this up soon, and thanks for subscribing :)
Thank you..
Is the wire you're using half hard or dead soft. I looked on amazon and there are so many options I was confused. Love your tutorial. Great job!!

very cool, was wondering how you put them in your hair, untill you did the stick lol... :)
:)
hi, what gauge is the thinner wire you used to wrap the circle together so it doesn't spread open? it looks to be about 22 but I am not sure. thank you
Yes, it’s 22 gauge.
When you said the stick was now "wire hardened" what did you mean by that? Thanks for this tutorial.... Its beautiful!
The stick is the straight piece that goes through the circle clip part and wire hardened means that the wire is harder than it was in the beginning and will not bend easily when you're wearing the pin. I hope this helps 😊 Denise
is this wire dead soft or half hard? thanks
You can use either, dead soft needs a little more hammering to wire harden and half hard will need less hammering. Hope this helps 😊
Denise where could get the wire? Love your tutorial
+Sherry Walker I like beadsmith wire, I usually get it at beadaholique.com, I also like artbeads.com designer wire, aluminum wire will work in these projects too and can be purchased inexpensively at Michaels craft store if you have one nearby. Hope this helps 😊
I can't tell what kind of wire to use can you tell me? I have some that I got at a craft store and it looks like it would work it's in colors.
As long as it’s stiff and heavy enough to hold hair or a scarf it’s fine. If the wire is too flimsy it won’t keep its shape. Usually a 10-14 gauge wire is good.
@@DeniseMathew thank you! I guess the smaller the number the bigger the diameter of wire.
yes, exactly 😊
What type of material are you working with? Silver, copper?
silver plated copper 😊
What will be the problem if I skip the hammering?
You don’t necessarily have to hammer it but if you do it will probably hold its shape better. Hope this is helpful.
Is that athletic tape on your pliers?
+Love2Destroy It's just a plastic craft type tape but athletic tape would work perfectly to wrap your pliers, hope this helps.
What did you wrap your pliers with? Thank you.
I used Fabric tape the kind of stuff people use for bandages, hope this helps.
Thank you!
Where do you get 10 ga wire?
beadaholique.com carries it.
Do you think 16g is too light for this?
+thelmarrie I think 16 gauge will be ok if you hammer it well to wire harden it, the only thing I suggest is that aluminum wire would probably be too flimsy in 16 gauge but most other types of wire should be perfectly good. Hope this helps, 😊
Denise Mathew Thank you so much for responding! I will be using copper so hopefully it works out well. Thanks again!
wow, thanks so much :o!
whats the name of wire tht you arr using in it
Artistic wire 😊
For a shawl or scarf pin, is there a way to make the pin pointy or sharp enough to pierce delicate fabric?
+Jane Thomas if you use a jewelry file, or just a regular file you should be able to get a pretty good point. To make it go quicker you can also cut the tip of the wire at an angle so it's pointed then finish it with a file. Hope this helps 😊

I cannot find 10 or 12 gauge silver/copper wire🤷🏻♀️
You can get it at beadaholique.com 😊
Lovely, thanks, 1926lady
