Building a Car Camping Setup (Toyota Yaris)

- Hey everyone! Long time, no see!
For the past two-ish months, we’ve been on a road trip; starting in New York, and ending in Anchorage, Alaska. We recorded this video back in May, and thought we’d upload it now to show you how we’ve been able to utilize our car space for extra storage, even though it’s a tiny two-door Toyota Yaris. If you follow us on other social media sites, you know that we’ve put a hold on vlogging, which means that we didn’t record this road trip. It’s been a much needed break, and we’ve really enjoyed just being together and, of course, spending time with a few different friends.

I am going to get one of them as my project car. So amazing on fuel and reliable. Thanks for the video.
They're back! Missed these videos immensely.
This was great, guys! Looks great too! Super impressed.
This video is awesome! Yaris love!
omg i LOVED this! would also love to know how the trip is going. I so admire and envy what you are doing. God Bless & you two are adorable!
This is so great! I also have a yaris. It's so cool to see people converting them. You guys are awesome! :)
Really well done - you should be proud of your yourselves!
Thank you for the great ideas. We are going to start a build in our Citreon C1 soon and as this is roughly the same dimensions your ideas will help!
Greetings from UK :)
Thanks for all the great information. I plan to try to do something similar with a new 2021 Chevy Spark. The spark and the Yaris are very similar in size. I have already pulled out the back seat.
Phenomenal build!
Enjoyed this video!
A new Real World Traveler vlog in my subscription feed?! Best. Day. EVER!
Great set up!
I just bought a 2010 black Toyota Yaris Hatchback. I intend to do this to head out west from OH to meet up with Bob Wells nomad group. I will have a dog & 2 cats with me. Main concern is there being enough room for all to be comfortable. I’ve had it with paying ridiculous rent, of working like a slave just to pay rent & apt bills. It’s just wrong. Not paying rent will allow me to save fairly quickly to get a bigger vehicle to live in comfortably. I’m a girl w no building skills or tools. No dad or boyfriend. So it’s pretty daunting & a freak out. Being told that taking out seats is absolutely necessary but then forget about reselling it. That seems unwise to me but being told it’s the only way. That would be a big hit as I paid way too much for this Yaris due to Covid. I can’t imagine just eating all that money. as it’s needed to help get the bigger van or whatever. Yaris is very mech sound. Who do I trust to help me without getting ripped off? Should I get a tent for more room in good weather? I feel afraid of some murderers getting me in a tent. How are you powering your electric needs? And heat? A Jackery or like that? I lDid you say solarr? Sorry for such a long winded post but I’m thinking you guys have the answers by now. Take care.
Great video, super informative
Nice build bro I like it!!
absolutely fantastic and amazing video travel video, thumbs up and support with bell on.!!
I love thisssss
Aye love these videos we do a lot of car camping so I have a similar set up our car is a jeep though so a little more room
Wow, that looks awesome guys! Do you do custom setups for Kia Sportages also? Great to see you both again!
Waiting for an update to your trip to Alaska. How did it go with a Yaris?
hellow guys.. great vlog and . here to support full view and like
Small is good! Digging your feed! ...
Would you ever consider a "small camper car meet up? Some cool place ?
Cool build! How would you acces the (original) spare tire area now? You'd have to remove the kitchenette right?
I really like your buildout. Just wondering what kind of MPG you’re getting?
Just bought a fairly new Yaris, already planning the conversion, I'm well be traveling across America, just in the lower 48, tent, 5 gallon poop bucket, 2 gallon shower set up, and a 1 burner stove, and a small cooler, I'm ready
Looks great. Just be aware that in some states you can get pulled over because your rear view is obstructed. Saying this from first-hand experience.
So the Young guy did all the Talking while the old man who is going to stay at home did all the work... Great start kid you will fill tge kick of happiness while sleeping in the car
Your dad is a awesome! Goodman
So... It's a year later. How was the trip? Would you do anything differently in your build?
Only issue if get rear ended all the wood might get impaled by a splinters just got with small fold up table just few totes set yiur stuff up on
Hello Sweet U2! I have a question: if you put this disc tightly inside, did it not turn out later that all the plastics inside are scratched and practically damaged? I also intend to remake my car like this, but only for 1 month and then recover it undamaged. Write how it was on the way.
Cool,,,,,I did it with a Ford Fiesta Hatchback,,,,,took out allllllllll the crap in the back.
So awesome!
Great video, just wondering if your gonna sleep in a tent or in the car itself?. Doesn't look like there's a lot of room in there to sleep lol.
Love you your Dad..
❤❤❤
Where do you both sleep ? No mention
how do you sleep?
As far as I'm concerned, this was a fun build. I enjoyed how it all came together. I think its amazing that you went to Alaska and back in the Yaris.
What will you be sleeping in? I guess it may be a tent but I am ignorant about this but isn’t Alaska to cold for that? All the best anyway.greg
Hi Greg! We slept in a tent when we would camp, and we also stayed in a lot of hotels along the way too. We also planned our trip around where friends and family lived, so we stayed with other people in a few states.
Real World Travelers just curious but why sleep in hotels when you outfitted your car specifically as a camper?
Hey! You wouldn't happen to have the cardboard template? Lol! 🤣 So how did you do the template with the cardboard? That step was not shown.
I didn't realize you were so handy Caleb! How functional did this setup end up being for you guys?
It wasn't as functional as we hoped, but overall we were really happy with how it got us through our trip. :)
So you dont plan to sleep inside car?
Hi there, i am thing to do a bed inside to travel around europe
Yaris gang
Great utilization of the space, still seems roomy too! I hear these get 40 mpgs, how was gas milage after loading in the build?
I was literally gonna ask the same
@@thomaskaufman8460 yea, I hope they'll answer 1 day & let us know :/
@@richardrobinson3105 so my 07 Yaris sedan gets 45 hwy. I’d imagine they’d lose 4-7mpg. You can boost that though with gas treatments and a DIY cold air intake
@@thomaskaufman8460 Idt I ever heard of cold air intakes. I'll hv to UA-cam search tht. & what do you use for your gas treatment? Yaris mpg sounds almost good as prius's
@@richardrobinson3105 Not quite as good. Prius in low 50s, Yaris in Mid 40s. Maintenance is cheaper on Yaris. Cold air intakes use air from outside of the car that get blown into the engine. The cold air helps the engine run better than warm air. I use Seafoam cans
Like your free-spirit. Hope your trip went well. Not sure I agree with your full-sized tire buy as it put a large object in your way. Donut tire was neatly stored and can travel a lot miles, enough to get regular tire patched. You didn't show what you used the 'trunk' space for when the donut tire was removed. Like your enthusiasm. Does a car-top carrier work on a Yaris? Would love to see a follow-up review video to evaluate what was worth the time/expense and why or why not. What you would've done differently, if anything. I also have this model of Yaris - honestly, I could never afford the $50 two drawer Container Store item. I don't have the skills to do all the woodwork. Would plastic storage bins have replaced the need for the fitted plywood platform? So yeah, I'd like to see a critique video to know what worked out and what was worth the $$. Thanks.
Hey, @Mystic Meadows Homestead! Thank for watching. :) The only reason why we decided against the donut was because we were going on the Alaska Highway, and we wanted to have a full sized tire just in case. The trunk space ended up holding some tools that we brought along, but we never actually needed them, so we never got into that area. As for making this for yourself, I know that there are plenty of ways to save money - you could always find cheaper containers - this is just what we chose for ours. We're also lucky that Caleb's dad was able to help us with the woodwork. We're still contemplating whether or not we're going to make an update video about our setup, but hopefully we'll find the time to do it!
How to take a shower, number one and number two?
Where do you sleep?
Sleeping outside in a tent?
BEARS!
Indeed. My thoughts as well.
Measurement notes?!
teu pai rindo de você dando um de massacre da serra elétrica kkkkkkkkkk
Молодцы
I'd probably have gone with a trailblazer or rav4
Super. Now when you get to Alaska just make sure you are always nearby your car. Why? Because the bears will tear your car apart to get at all those food odors you’re gonna be creating. Good luck.
😂Pete Larson, we drove and camped so much on our trip, and never once was attacked by bears. We also washed our dishes, so no odors.
Odors from food stored, not dirty dishes. Lol.
Awesome job on the video my friend. Loved it
Also i like what you did with your channel . You have my subscription would love to have your support as well.
Thanks again

👊🏻
You are going to want a better sleeping area and less stuff.
And where you going to sleep?
I thought you were going to camp in the car , what is the point?
They’ll be depending on hotels for the days when it will rain for 3 days straight with 40 moh wind gusts that will destroy that tent and soak it through. Need to be able to sleep in that car. Easy to do in a yaris but youve got way too much stuff.
How dare you input a Doug Marcaida clip followed by a circular saw revving up.
What is this my eyes doth see?!?!
Shout out to Bob Ross.
@@ColinBloodworth He gets all the credit for this one.
Guide to building a camping setup in a Yaris
Step one: Don’t use a Yaris
Toooooo much weight!,,,,,,Simplicity is the Art of life. I currently car camp out of a Ford Fiesta Hatch.......less is more kids. Get an Aluminum hitch carrier and move 100 lbs out of the Cab.
