- How to make black buttercream using zero food coloring! This recipe uses black cocoa to color it, which tastes just like an Oreo cookie, doesn't stain your mouth at all and results in a super black buttercream! Note- Different brands of black cocoa result in differing shades of black. To ensure a true black buttercream I recommend using The Cocoa Traders (see below) or simply add a small amount of black gel coloring if it does not develop a dark enough color.
EASY BLACK BUTTERCREAM RECIPE
Makes 6-7 cups
1 1/2 cups (232g) Dutch processed black Cocoa (The Cocoa Traders)
2lb (907g) powdered sugar
2 cups (452g) unsalted butter, room temperature
1 cup (240 ml) heavy cream
1 tbsp pure vanilla extract
Pinch of salt

@@SheriWilson black cocoa powder is not available in KARACHI,PAKISTAN .... but I will try my best 🙂🙂🙂
@@quratnadeem2740 if you can’t find black cocoa, you can use regular cocoa and add some black gel coloring instead. It will still work out just fine! 💗
@@SheriWilson Thank u so much 💓💗💖💛💕
I was able to get this cocoa powder, I’m so excited to make this! Can I make this frosting two days in advance? Will it hold up on the fridge and then when I remix it? I usually take it out of the fridge a few hours before I try to remix. Thanks!!
Oh yes, you could definitely make it ahead of time! I would just give it a quick mix before using and it should be perfect! ❤️
thanks so much for this recipe; I do have to ask, is it super chocolatey? Just want to know if it will overwhelm other cake flavors like vanilla
It tastes just like an Oreo cookie in flavor, so I’d say yes it definitely has its own flavor profile and would need to be taken into account when pairing with other things 💗👍
Thank you 😊
Great recipe xx
Also where can I buy Black cocoa pls ?
Hi! Thank you so much for watching! The link to the black Cocoa I use is in the caption 💗💗
@@SheriWilson thank you xx❤️
Maybe since I'm not a baker by trade - but I was quite annoyed that my local bakeries (Chicago) would not do black buttercream on a custom $100+ cake. I understand it's unusual, runs the risk of staining, etc but this recipe makes it look so easy so I don't understand why all of them refused.
Because they are too cheap to buy the black cocoa or too dumb to know to use it. It’s a bit pricey and I had to order mine on Amazon but it’s the same thing used to make Oreo cookies and tastes like it too 😋
@TriciaM 01 makes sense. Regardless of price, clearly I was willing to shell out for the cake. I think it's laziness or stupidity. I'll do it myself next year lol
@@thisismyaltaccount85 It’s laziness. I used to work at a bakery, and black was an offered color. It can be hard to get black food coloring to show color pay off because of the way the color doesn’t fully emulsify in the butter unless you use an emulsion blender which fully emulsifies the dye into butter and gives a rich color pay off. Black cocoa powder is expensive, but can be bought online. It just requires wait time to get it, and can effect the flavor of the cake because it’s essentially chocolate, but there really is no reason a bakery wouldn’t be able to offer a black color buttercream. Sounds like the cake shops were intimidated by, or weren’t comfortable using black dye or cocoa powder.
That is annoying because it isn't unusual. Maybe it was 10 years ago but black cakes are pretty standard.
@kandik7641 didn't realize how common they are. Now I'm annoyed again lmao. Is there a better way to find bakers besides Google or yelp? Maybe social media or Instagram. Idk. I usually get cakes from whole foods lol
Would I be able to add the cocoa to a Swiss meringue buttercream?
It tends to make it a little bit gritty, but yes you can 👍🏻
I just realized you linked linked turn table!!! Is this turn table super super spinny? I'm in the market for a good one but it's hard to tell from the short clip?😊
It is super spinny yes! I’ve used it everyday for the past 3 years and it’s still going strong ☺️
@@SheriWilson 😲😲😲😲
can you use black food die or would it mess up the recipe? 😄
Does it taste a bit like the oreo cookie? I want to make an all-black oreo cake for a birthday and it would be great to use that buttercream for covering the cake and make some decorations :D But I'm a little bit afraid that it would made it a bit too strong? It's a layered cake: oreo cake - cream - oreo cake - cream - oreo cake (it's my first cake, I don't know how to explain myself better, sorry XD) and then the same cream but with the dark cocoa powder to cover it and decorations. Maybe if I add a bit more of the regular cream in the middle of the cakes it wouldn't taste too much like just the cookie of the oreo?
Yes it tasted just like Oreo buttercream! The bitterness of the cocoa is balanced out by the sweetness of the powdered sugar and it’s actually not overpowering at all! Can’t wait to hear what you think of it 🥰❤️ you could always use plain vanilla butter in the middle just to balance out the Oreo flavor
@@SheriWilson Thank you very much for your answer and for the video! I'll definitely put a comment of how it turned out 😊🖤
is there a less expensive alternative to this black cocoa powder that will still get the same results?
No
Everything has to be room temperature ??
what if i dont have heavy whipping cream? what else can i use
I just use whole milk
Is it 2 sticks or 2 cups butter? In the video you added 2 sticks which is 1 cup
Hi Monique! The video was cut down, but I added a total of 4 sticks (2 cups) butter to the bowl 💗
Thanks, can’t wait for your new book!
I’ve been curious to know how to make frosting black without using a flavor I don’t want and how to not dye my teeth with black!!!
This black buttercream frosting is it super sweet or it's light on the sweet because I'm trying to make this midnight black buttercream cream on my tres leches cake for a customer I don't want this frosting to be overly sweet
The cocoa is super bitter so you can choose how much sugar to use , i just made this and i think you make it to your taste
@@jossyramirez19 thank you so much
@Joselyn Ramirez I had a question do u make it how she made it with the 2lbs of Powder sugar and stuff did it come out sweet or no
You are using dutch black cocoa, won't it taste like chocolate? What if your customer doesn't want chocolate?
Then don’t use cocoa and don’t have black icing or else it’ll stain their teeth. There is a cake paint that some use and I heard it doesn’t stain
Does anyone know what size cake this will frost?
It will usually frost a six or eight inch cake 💗
Thank you so much!
Can you halve this recipe?
I tried, but there's still too much dry ingredients for 2 sticks of butter, way too much!
I just made this and it’s just brown
My high school graduation cupcakes had black icing that died all the guests teeth black!!!!
am i the only one that thinks her voice sounds like heidi klums' ?
Agree totally
I made this for a second time and it’s STILL NOT BLACK. It’s a dark brown
It must be the cocoa you are using. You need a good quality black cocoa
That black cake was beautiful!
I like that the mixer matches the frosting. 😄
