  • Balanchine at his best when the NYC Ballet was still under his direction. Principal dancers are Merrill Ashley, Robert Weiss, and the soloists in order are of appearance, Bonita Borne, Cheryl Ware, Deborah Austin, and Stephanie Saland.

Merrill Ashley changed the game of grande and petite allegro when she danced this role. Shear perfection.

This physically took my breath away for a second. I’m astounded at Merrill’s technique and Balanchines choreography. I’m almost in tears at how amazing this was!

At first with Ballo, I was awed by Merrill and bored with the rest of it... I know, it was me, then. Now, omg, I see so much. I never realized how Mr. B , in pas de deux, uses very LONGGG phrasing that illustrates the musical phrasing in such a subtle and masterly way! He did so much more than weird stuff or new stuff. Look at the petite allegro steps !!!! I don't even know what some of those are! And, have to say, Merrill's speed and musicality, the way she's right on TOP of the music, is SUPERB! Thanks for this!

Such perfection. Absolutely perfect Merrill supported by scintillating corps. Just marvelous. Never tire of watching NYCB the way it was. Everything so natural, like it can’t be any other way. Nobody goes through positions and steps. They just dance.

I love this piece and all the dancers are just exquisite. I was so fortunate to study with Stephanie Saland in 2005, what an absolute treat

Debra Austin!! Later she would become the first African-American female dancer to rise to the rank of principal in a major American ballet company.

I read "Dancing for Balanchine years ago and so it's such a treat to see this lovely performance, and recognize Ashley's description of Balanchine's creative process. Wish that "Ballade", which Balanchine also choreographed on Ashley, was also recorded on film and available to enjoy as well.

You can just from the camera angles used here that Ballanchine was still in charge. Ballanchine wanted everything shot from the perspective of a person sitting in the center orchestra. He didn't like shots from a angle. He hated those European films of his ballets produced by Reiner Moritz, which were shot with crazy cut-ins and strange angles.

DavidAsset78 Hi. Who is this? What years did you work for Mr. B? He was upset with the editing of the Berlin films you're right. I was there so know the whole story. He also liked some full stage shots as if you were sitting in the First Ring (1st balcony) at State Theater.

Merrill wrote about Balanchine's reaction to those European films in her book Dancing for Balanchine. I find the Berlin films frustrating and painful to watch. You can't see the dancing for all the fancy, self conscious camera work. The Dance in America films (of which this Ballo clip is one) are infinitely superior.

Suzanne was Balanchine's queen, not Merrill Ashley. He did 2 great ballet for Merrill, but Suzanne was NYC Ballet's *prima* ballerina. Everyone definitely would agree on that.

I find it telling that up 'til now, no major Russian ballet company has taken a crack at this. If they ever did, the first thing they would do after Merrill Ashley finished coaching their rehearsals, is slow it down. Which then kind of misses the point.

Everyone in NYCB had such beautiful, articulated pas de chats. When done at tempo musically, it looks magical. I've yet to see any other company perform this step so lovely.

Balanchine loved cats. Suzanne Farrell had 9 cats and Mr. B. loved visiting them all. She writes about it in her autobiography. Mr. B.'s cat, Mourka, had half a book dedicated to her, and yes, he choreographed on her. This marvelous little orange and white kitty got to dance!

With all due respect it's the pointe work that gets me. Assemblés landing on pointe, ouch. Though it looks so beautiful here. I danced on pointe briefly and it was torture. My career was in modern dance.

Robert Weiss does some amazing things in Ballo della Regina. And as I watch, I marvel at how he can do these big jumps with beats and turns and yet seem to have no Demi plie at all! That nobody saw him I've seen him in many other ballets and often I didn't think much of his dancing. I believe this performance of Baalo is probably one of the best he's ever done!

I never really understood what Balanchine saw in him, but yes, he’s a great partner.
