I’ve been all over Thailand and visited my fair share of Thai islands too but I have to say I would never go back to Koh Tao. There’s something about the place that doesn’t feel right and I’ve spoken to Thai people who agree with me. Stay safe DF and avoid the lonely areas of the beaches there after dark.

Hi mate. I am a lucky man because I to got to Koh Tao (the turtle island) first time in 1989. Spent about three years coming back to Koh on and off. Spent much time living on the beach (was possible at that time) with my Thai girlfriend, made friends with some of the very friendly locals, was fishing with the locals and cooking our own food on wooden fire or with a coconut charcoal stove. Locals agreed us staying at the beach. I felt no danger what so ever. Later we rent a small house of one of the locals. Koh Tao truly was an pristine tropical paradise at that time. I was just blown away of the beauty of the island. Only three bungalow places on the whole island there were. Tourism was just about to start. No regular boat service (one had to ask the fishermen about trips to Koh Pha Ngan), no telephones, no TV ...... It was a awesome, peaceful and unforgotten experience I had. Now about 30 years later tourism has had its effect on Koh Tao. It's hard to compare and hurts my soul if I think of the long gone times and how I see it nowadays. Most people still have a good time and enjoy their holiday time on the island. There is the beautiful side of Koh Tao, but there is also a dark side about this place. In DF episode 115 you explained the reason why you chose your UA-cam name Dead Farang. For quite a lot of Farang Koh Tao has become the last place they ever visited. Since 2014 eight Farang were found dead in Koh Tao. (unnatural deaths) Some were murdered and some were found dead under different circumstances. On the internet there is quite a lot of information to be found about the Dead Farang of Koh Tao. Are those deaths in Koh Tao a coincidence? What happened? You might be interested to do some research?!? IMPORTANT I'm not saying Thailand or Koh Tao ist not safe! Bad stuff just happens! Anyway.... I hope all you people all be safe and have a good time. btw. you might want to have a look at Haad Sai Nuan, south of Mae Haad for a day trip. Some people like the quiet atmosphere a bit away of it all. You can get there by boat or walk in about 3/4 of a hour. We used to walk.... There is a small road with steep up an down. There are small sandy beaches with good swimming and snorkeling and large rocks. Tiny rocky island just off the shore. Several bungalow places and two or three restaurants there are. Ask at the restaurants if you can rent snorkeling gear. no 100 bath entrance fee for the beach!!! Martin

Great video, very informative. It's weird that some beaches have the green slime and others are pristine. I would think it's pretty much the same water around the island. Not sure if it's low season, but the beaches seemed pretty empty. I don't think I would give my passport to anyone. I thought they mostly did away with that requirement after the those Iranians on the missing Malaysia flight 370 were found to have used passports stolen in Thailand. It seems there is a black market for them so some of these bike rental shops may "lose" them and sell them on the black market or at least hold your passport hostage to try to extort you for made up damages like almost happened to you. A lot of broke farangs also sell their passports and then report them stolen.
Yep always take lots of pictures so you can show prof of the condition of the bikes. isn't a good way to end a vacation.. the same thing happened to me in Cabo San Lucas with a wave runner so wherever you go don't forget the pictures are your ticket out... for me I always think do I really want to rent something that can effect my trip.. no... If you ever come back go to Island Travel or Oli’s Motorbikes in Mae Haad for a rental. It’s 250thb but they’re super chill, just a 2000thb deposit no passport.

I'm no expert but rented a bike in Thailand last year and because I've heard of potential scams, I made sure to take plenty of photos and video before I took possession of it.
Yeah when they hold your passport they have got you by the nuts and don't try to get another one at the embassy as a Aussie did without police report so made to work out a deal to get it back as they won't issue you a new one because it is not stolen or lost.
It sucks to Farang... You just need to have good friends or know people from there to have your back. So be careful, be nice, be courteous, be respectful, ...etc. Thai people are generally very generous and kind, but you have to find them.
I always carry an expired passport just for this reason. It always gets excepted. If a cop threatens to confiscate the bike I say sure.... sure......no problem.
anyone heard of poseidon beach on koh tao??if you go to hut number 4,check under it..in the sand..i left a golden virginia tin there....you may get a pleasant surprise..good luck..!!

Can't blame the locals for being strict on renting scooters. Some tourists rent and abuses their scooter bikes. It's common sense that you would look over or go over the bike with the owner before you take it out.
How can that guy charge you 100 Bhat just to go down to the beach? You know he doesn't own the beach, so he doesn't have any legal right to charge people like that. Do you think he would have called the police if you had refused to pay and gone down to the beach anyway?

Been to Phuket twice and I never rented a bike once. I either pay for tuk tuk or have a holiday gf show me around on her bike.
