    In this video I've got some advice to help you find the best bindings to match your snowboard. Snowboard bindings have lot of different features, but the stiffness is what makes them pair well with you snowboard. The difference in binding flex will make a difference in the type snowboarding you're doing. The stiffer the binding the more control and aggressive you can snowboard, while a softer snowboard will give you a more free feeling while snowboarding.

    Nice! Yea, important to note that while bindings fall in the general soft, medium, stiff categories- there are kind of hybrids that have stiffer base plates with softer high backs and vice versa. Once you have an idea of what you prefer you can really dial it in

    I can vouch for the Arbor Hemlock as a really really good soft-flexing binding. In particular the moulded ankle straps are just perfect, they fit to the contour of your boot very well. The only criticism I would have is the forward lean is a bit fiddly to adjust, but most people don't tinker with that too much so it shouldn't be an issue.

    One of the smartest things for a newer rider to do, or somebody that just doesn't want to buy or can afford a lot of equipment, is to get a more medium flexing binding, but one with multiple positions for the ankle strap. Then they can either lower the ankle straps for more mobility/freedom and tweakability, put them in the middle position for a more happy in between, or raise them all the way for more support and response, not to mention using forward lean in accordance with what you're riding and how much response you want with that (heelside turns) as well. Burtons are good for that, but then you don't have as much side to side stance adjustability, at least with their Re:Flex bindings, but then with Union, you never have any multiple positions for your ankle straps, but have really good stance adjustability. There are other brands that will give you both. 👍

    I wish I had known this 10 years ago. When I first learned snowboarding. I got a really flat and stif board with a mid flex bindings. My board was slightly too big for me when I got it but I was 12 yrs old then. I’ve grown into my board and still fit most of my gear now. But I remember having a really hard time learning how to turn and move with my board. I often got caught in powder snow and gained speed quickly and for a beginner speed isn’t the nicest feeling when learning. I also didn’t weigh a lot for my age and height then. I still don’t.

    • @smaggio13
      @smaggio13 5 років тому +1

      I would definitely agree, upgrade the boots first. The control of your snowboard starts from your feet/boots. Also, things like ankle support should be coming from your boots, not the bindings. There's a fair amount of pro riders who ride stiffer boots with softer bindings (i.e, Scott Stevens).

      Get a better boot than the moto, soft boots wear out so quick compared to stiffer boots, even just stepping up to the burton ruler would be a much better. Plus boots are the most important part of your setup, cheaper board or bindings dont make or break a day. But cheap boots will.

When I tried on Union Trilogy bindings, I saw there was space in the toe area between my boots and bindings even though the binding size is correct and I was strapped tight. When I tried Burton Scribe bindings, it is a snug fit. Should I pair my narrow Burton boots with narrow Burton bindings even though Union bindings are considered the best bindings maker? I am particularly concerned about the space because I broke two ending metatarsal bones snowboarding last season. Thanks for the advice!

    • @christopherdraper3503
      @christopherdraper3503 4 роки тому +1

      Hey Veronica, stepping in since you haven't received a response yet. I'd like to first state that Burton and Union both make fantastic bindings at this point, so your decision should not be made based on the brand alone. I used to work in a snowboard shop and as a Snowboard instructor for years, not to mention having owned multiple bindings from both companies (and others). I will note that a company like Burton makes more than bindings, they also make boards and boots (the latter of which you already own). Companies like this try their hardest to design products that can be used with other brands, but ultimately they're gear is going to "fit" best with another of its' own kind. If your Burton boots fit best with your Burton bindings, then already your decision has been made: buy what fits best. This will tremendously help eliminate injuries related to your gear. That being said, maybe experiment with some other bindings if you're not very happy with that particular pair; it sounds as though you've already tried out a few options in person. If I can offer some advice before you make your final decision, call up your local shop and explain that you'd like to come in with your boots to find bindings that both fit your foot and your skill-level. I should warn you: be prepared to make a purchase at that shop if you find the right bindings. Online businesses and mega sport corporations are killing small business in snow and skate culture due to their ability to sell at the lowest possible cost (wholesale) without much worry of sustaining profits. When someone spends an hour or more trying on boots at a shop just to leave knowing there will be a sale online, it's one more nail in the coffin. Ironically, those places simply cannot match the core of small shops and they will never be able to provide the service of accurately fitting you to your gear and providing a wealth of knowledge as well. So please, for the sake of the "sport," give your hard earned dollars to those who consistently contribute positively to the culture of snowboarding.
      Hoping that your injuries have healed and your upcoming winter is full of fresh powder and happy turns!

    • @veronical8103
      @veronical8103 4 роки тому +1

      Christopher Draper Thank you so much, Christopher! I totally agree with you on supporting local shops! I bought my Burton Felix at a local shop! The Felix has cables across the ankles, but they still did not hold my skinny heels. The local shop fit me with a pair of LifeSaver insoles that finally lock down my heels after trying quite a few pairs since last season! I will bring my boots back and try some more bindings and buy the one that works from the store.
      BTW, I have been told that bindings should be the least of my worries, but I believe the ancient bindings likely contributed to my two metatarsals fractures in the spring meshed potato snow. They are not like today’s rubber straps with holes. They are very hard metal and plastic-like straps. My bones broke just above the straps.
      Do not buy used boots, board or bindings. I spent less than $100 on all three as a beginner and I broke 2 bones and had to have a surgery at the end of my first season. I might even have to learn to ride goofy because my left foot still does not like pressure. Buy quality products, folks.
      Thank you so much, Christopher! ❄️

    • @christopherdraper3503
      @christopherdraper3503 4 роки тому +1

      @@veronical8103 so sorry to hear about your injury! I've never heard of anything like it till now and it sounds excruciating - truly hope you are still able to enjoy riding! The silver lining is that you might become better at goofy and if you fully recover you can say you ride both ways haha. And it's great to hear you've already established a relationship with your local shop.
      Last few notes to consider after an injury: It never hurts to take a private lesson as a warm up to the season, especially with new gear. But hopefully once you've adjusted to your new setup you'll feel the difference it makes. You couldn't be more right, quality products make the experience all the more enjoyable. Just be sure to stretch before and after you lace up! Cheers

      I have Strata and Scott Stevens Contacts pro with mini disc as well..do u think Stratas are great for a softer board like flex rating 3 for groomers and casual cruising the resort with small tricks and jumps as well

    I've watched quite a few of your videos and didn't know you were 6'3". I'm about the same height and 190 lbs. Good to hear perspective from the taller riders. I'm getting a new setup for next season--stiff board and bindings but sub 160 on the length. Should be a fun experiment.

      @kt-tu6jl 5 років тому

      Same height and weight as you 6”3 190 . What kind of riding you do? Im mostly all groomers, carving hard , hitting natural jumps. What’s your current set up?

      @@kt-tu6jl I do mostly the same style of riding. Hard charging and carving mostly. Mammoth is my go to. I love getting into the trees and the big mountain powder runs when I can. I'll go into the park but it's not really my home.
      My setup last year was a mid flex rocker flat rocker true twin 161 {or 163 can't remember} but I'm expanding the quiver with a stiffer cambered directional powder oriented board. I got Flow NX2 Fusion bindings on sale a month ago. I've never used Flows before but a reeeeeally advanced riding homie of mine swears by them and they're stiff as hell. I already had some still relatively new Salomon boots that I love. I also got an almost new pair of Nike boots off eBay. I was stoked to find those b/c they're getting really rare.
      I'm struggling to decide on a board. I'm somewhat budget conscious so I'm a bit limited on selection. That's why I do most of my shopping off season lol. Anyhoo right now I'm torn between a few boards like the Nitro Fusion, Ride Berzerker, Ride MTNpig, Jones Aviator, etc. I haven't tried any of those so it'll be interesting. I do know that I'll probably get a slightly shorter board than normal. I'm looking at 159s on some of the powder boards.

      Courtney McGowan nice!! I live in Northern New Mexico, I ride Pajarito, Sipapu, and love getting up to Monarch Mtn in Co.also Wolf Creek! I got over 80 days in last year. What a great season .i ride Burton Rulers, (burtons have always fit my feet perfect) Burton Mission reflex, always have good luck and dependability with them. Last year I rode a Slash Brainstorm 160. And a Jones Explorer 160. I’m a size 10 and occasionally this past year was booting out. Gonna go wide this year though, to eliminate boot out. Both boards are camrock. They ride real nice. Thinking about checking out some Nidecker boards.Area . Jones explorer wide and Jones flagship wide. All more less in the 161 range. I think if you can get a camber dominant board your carving is really gona improve. People get scared of too much camber but I rode my bros Flagship and his Yes PYL and didn’t have any problems.

      @@kt-tu6jl Do any of those resorts take the Ikon Pass?? I haven't been to New Mexico in a really long time and I try to get to a new resort or mtn range every season. If next year is anything close to last season I just might have to make a trip out to NM!
      I'm in the same boat with the boot out issues. I wear 12's so it's always a concern of mine. The same guy who recommended the NX2 bindings rode on the Jones Storm Chaser and loved it. I'm looking at the Jones Hovercraft and a couple of the Nidecker boards also. The Nidecker Mellow seems interesting. You're totally on point about the camber dominant boards. That's pretty much all I'm looking at right now.

      Courtney McGowan no they don’t take the IKON pass. But if you were spending some time at Pajarito , Sipapu local power pass unlimited is 325 plus u get 3 free lift tix at some decent Co resorts Monarch, Purgatory. I think you definitely need a wide! If u ever head out to NM HMU! Uncrowded max 1 min lift lines! Praying 🙏🏽 for another great season

    I used to ride with Union Force bindings but I've switched to NOW Drive bindings and my riding has improved a lot more. My NOW Drive bindings are more comfortable, my board is more responsive with no heel lift, and they absorb chatter a lot better.

    The stratas are the worst $280 I ever spent! So stiff that they feel like they’re amputating you with every trick. Union contact are where it’s at. Super soft and feels like you’re not even wearing a binding feels like you’re skateboarding on snow.

    Match your boots as well...
    Stiff board
    Stiffer boot
    Stiffer binding
    Or
    Soft boot
    Soft binding
    Soft board
    You get the most of out of your gear that way.
