  • Square off SWAP automated chess board feature demonstration (full game):
The most asked questions have been about the following actions:
    Knight moves
    Castling
    Captures/Parking
    Checkmate
    Board reset
This was me vs max level 20 (3000+ elo) AI bot built into the board. I'm only 1000 rating on chess .com, so please excuse the poor chess skills. You can choose a difficulty rating or you can use adaptive difficulty that adjusts to your skill level as you play.
I am able to play timed games with friends on chess .com or lichess. When they make a move on their app, it will move on my board. When I move on the board, it will make the move on their app. (As far as I know, I cannot make a move from the app once you have started a physical board game.) It is relatively slow, so I don't agree that it is blitz game friendly, as the company advertises, but you can select a semi auto mode that turns off parking and you remove the captured pieces manually - this speeds things up a little bit. if playing other square off board users, however, it will pause the clock while the pieces are moving.
I believe that I am also able to stream live FIDE tournament/championship games in real time, or past games that have already happened. I have replayed grandmaster games, but have not tried streaming live events yet.
This board will record each game you play, even if playing face to face without automation. The app will then allow you to analyze the game and suggest better moves or areas in your game that have room for improvement. So you can go back through any game you've played and replay it. you can bookmark your favorite games.
You can import PGN's of games you have played elsewhere and have them played out for you as well.
My favorite feature has to be the board reset. My least favorite part of chess is resetting the pieces. I've now been spoiled.
The app tells ypu how much battery the board has left, but it is not accurate. It showed I had 2/3rd battery left, (showing yellow indicating medium power left) but the board died mid-game, which was pretty maddening...
What's very cool is that when it died, it switched to app mode and I could start making moves on the app. I made my moves on the app until I plugged it back in. The board powered up and reconnected to my phone, which took somewhere around 90 seconds.
Once it reconnected, it switched back to board mode. I could no longer move on the app, and resumed playing on the board.
I DID have to move the pieces to match the current position of the board once it resumed. It doesn't "catch up" once you are back in board mode.
It is advertised as enough battery life for a full day of chess. I was able to get an hour, maybe an hour and a half out of it before it died. It was definitely enough for a few games.
If you go idle for too long, the board will need to be power cycled to wake it up, but you likely will not leave it idle for this long during a game.
All in all, it is not without its bugs, and sometimes it will need some help or a nudge, but I must say that it works WAY better than I thought it would based on other youtube demo videos I have seen.
Honestly, the app seems to be more buggy than the board. Hopefully they will invest more towards the software in the future.
I'm very excited that the long wait is over. I ordered this chess set over two and a half years ago, so I'm very glad to see that it works as well as it does.
Did I mention it has multiple other games including checkers, connect four, and draughts?
I don't recommend a pre-order though. The price is tempting, but the company is worthless when it comes to customer service. I felt like they were taking me for a ride... and I dont appreciate that. If they tell you it is a six month wait, then they are lying through their teeth. Expect somewhere between 2 and 3 year wait. The warranty process is... you're not gonna have a fun time if the hardware fails. People were attending live demonstrations just to ask questions about their non-working boards because they could not get a response through the proper channels.. and there were quite a few attendees only there to get answers to their issues. only time will tell how well it will hold up woth occasional use.
    thanks for watching.
