the comedian slug is thinking of is Jeff Green, from Curb and Arrested Development. "Pursue your dream in your spare time! Get a career in what you're good at."
I fell over Atmosphere on a Punk o rama 8 cd from 2003, Bird Sings Why The Caged I Knows, been a massive fan ever since, only got to see them once, this year in Copenhagen, a 50th birthday gift from my why, I was buzzing for weeks. Obviously, via them, I discovered other great artists, Brother Ali, Prof., and Eyedea, some of my favourites. Great podcast. Big love to these legends. Peace to all in the comments!
I just want to say that this is my first time tuning in to your podcasts, and it was extremely profound! I’ve always appreciated your work and atmospheres as well, but to see you and Slug discuss such heavy and deeper topics definitely makes you even more relatable to me as human beings. Thank you for this insight into your souls. This has forever changed my world- and for that I am beyond grateful.
Often at shows I would find a spot that felt good for me.. against a wall somewhere or in the back.. I remember Brother Ali passing by me repeatedly to go to the stage as I leaned on the wall in Chicago at the Riviera Crazy how we experience Time
Thank you for this Brother Ali. Slug was my hero in high school, but in a weird way, because I also bought CDs from him at 5th Element and interacted with him in person. I realized that my teenage hero worship of him would likely be weird to him. Somehow, I've always understood that being famous is difficult, because I always understood that I somehow expected Slug to be more than just a normal human. This all went back to even before Lucy Ford dropped, I bought it directly from him. I've followed more or less at different times over the 24 years since first hearing Scapegoat on Radio K, could talk for a bit about all that. I have to say though, this is beautiful, this conversation here. Just hearing it gives me affirmation of sorts. Not sure how to explain it, something about his introspection, always knowing he was on the right path. God bless.
I really appreciate you sharing this. The intention behind this podcast is to talk to people that I know and love on a heart level about their journey. My life has taken me to places and circles that don’t often interact with one another. But I see so much beauty and meaning and pain and challenge in all of these people. So even if you don’t recognize all of the names on the podcast, it may be worthwhile to give them a lesson. Much appreciated!
@@BrotherAli_Travelers Happy Eid. I actually introduced your music to a young east African woman earlier today, driving her home after celebrating Eid, driving for Lyft. Minnesota's Muslim community is wonderful, so many great people, and you are a great bridge or ambassador between them and the larger community of Minneapolis. I love you for many songs, Good Lord, Freedom Ain't Free, Uncle Sam Goddamn, those 3 probably rank among my favorite hiphop songs ever, judged by how many times I've listened to them. Never Learn? Man, Brother Ali and Slug sitting in a room.....this was such a powerful episode! I'm about to listen to part 2 today! Thats some serious energy right there. You inspire me on the daily and I appreciate everything you are doing! You've helped me through some serious life stuff and continue to help me get to a place of absolute gratitude....what an exquisite soul you are. Thanks for just being you and helping me to be comfortable being me.
Was absolutely blessed to come see this conversation in person down in Madison. Never wanted this conversation to end and it had me in tears by the end. Also appreciate that you're comfotable crying infront of people, the realest thing we can do is show what we are feeling. Love ya'll Ali and Slug! Show that followed was amazing and blew expectations. Thank you for everything, much love!
Much love brother Ali all the way from Aotearoa. Atmosphere is my new favourite I found through your music. Rugged man and the first immortal technique
i have never related more to so much of what an artist oresented or said about themselves as i do with slug. The first few times i lheard his music, i thought my friends were messing with me, that they were recording these songs to mess with me by creating situations from my life and slightly changing names nd events to make it fit in a way that woulld confuse me.Then, i started listening to his music on my own and hsve just been hooked. This interview really brought so much light to me, thank you for hosting and giving slug a platform to be more visible in such a real and humble way brotha ali. Thank you both for the work youve done with your music. You guys probably hear it all the time, but you really help people with your art and bring hope, joy and a bit of necessary lesson teaching hurt into the world. thank you.
Remember when you two battled at Scribble Jam. You both have come a long way, always been beautiful souls. Seven/SeanOne raised me. You didn’t ask for the responsibility, but in the absence of a real father figure, the music taught me language, principles, persona (vulnerability in masculinity), and how to change. Thank you for teaching so much about how to live.
That was really interesting hearing your perspective of slug being that “big brother” figure. It’s crazy how much things like that shape who we become. You’re an awesome interviewer too I love how you framed your questions they really invited introspective thinking and answers 🙏
I hope you are having a great day, just wanted to drop a quick comment and tell you how much i appreciate your work! I struggled trying to understand myself for many years until i found your music in 2016, it guided me through a tough time and helped me realize a lot of things about myself and life in general. Big love from Norway -Mikki
Thank you so much for all you do. I've gotten so much from your music and words. But even more so my best freind has gotten so much from what you do and seeing him receive that makes me so happy. Appreciate you brother Ali, keep at it man your impacting people and doing exactly what your hoping to.
@@BrotherAli_Travelers man thank you so much for the reply. I paused the video right away yo post that one so I could show some love since it's the first time I've gotten to interact with you. Ill probably comment after finishing part 2 because I want to put that out there. Please don't feel obligated to respond, im sure you have your own night full of things and I'm just thankful you took a moment to see me.
Thank you for this wonderful podcast. You are healers. Just as both of you have released songs that have had a profound effect on my life(Forest Whittaker, Dreamer), there are quotes from just this episode alone that I would do well to carry with me as I progress further into this time of personal healing and growth. For this, thank you. One of the questions an audience member asked left me very annoyed at first. I, for one, know I've made mistakes and said things in the past that have seriously hurt people. It has brought me great pain reflecting on this- but there is no way but to move forward and make better choices. Through this we better ourselves and learn that our mistakes do NOT define us. So yes, I find myself annoyed when people bring up the past mistakes of others, especially when it's evident that significant growth has been made. But larger than that- I think the gracefulness of how you both admitted your mistakes, listened to and communicated how you were feeling to the other side, and demonstrated that you wish to actively mend any harm that may have been done... ...that's some of the hardest sh*t I've seen any rapper do EVER. The person in question absolutely has the right to feel the way that they do and I see this now. You may not agree with this person but you lend them an ear and your time. It would bring me great joy to see others approach interactions with others with the same maturity that you two exemplify. So again, thanks. p.s. I'm visiting my father this week and it just so happens that he lives 10 minutes away from the very place Oudimentary is based. So I know where I'll be paying a visit (:
Thank you for sharing such exemplary content. I appreciate the superlative (deep puddle) dynamics of this conversation. I would also thoroughly enjoy a similar discourse with Murs, Aesop Rock, and or Sole.
The first time I heard If I was Santa clause was the first time I ever truly felt like I related to some one, Since then ant and slug have given me so much it's hard to express gratitude because words fall short. Just know that I appreciate you guys more then I can say, if I was Santa clause, love life, summer song, bitter, flicker, fortunate, aurthers song, these aren't just songs to me. Anyway I can't explain just know that you've given me more then I can give back and I'll forever consider you both friends. Love life, peace out
I’ve toured the Southwest once, got in trouble far away from home and literally found housing with roommates who were Atmosphere fans. A family. Mom, Dad, and son who knew his name is Slug and let me move my studio into the basement… Blogging might make a comeback with this sh*t. Thank you for filming the Q&A, the audience sounds great bra!

There’s certainly a case to be made. The only mark against him is impact on hip-hop culture as a hole, but that’s not his fault. Just a category he was placed in.
@@BrotherAli_Travelers indie rap is not the category that's for sure, whatever that's means... I remember getting into Rhymesayers tough. I was working at the house of blues San Diego, in 2005 I've been to a grip of concerts but in my opinion slug is the best at it by far, but Brother Ali ooohwee!! my respects Brother Ali although I've never been to any of your concerts I feel like I know on a spiritual level. Man the things you say it's like you vicariously live through me... God bless
The apology in the middle just got me. I mean I dont ever wanna hurt people, but I am who I am at the time I am that person. No one should really have to be apologizing so much for who they were at one time, and who they are now. Most of us learn. I also understand Slug you are in a very different position than me. Like you touch people, so that takes a different kind of responsibility. It just all seems to lose the major and important factor of being young and learning thru the act of doing. We keep going this way and people wont be allowed to make mistakes. Or those mistakes will be held against them for all time instead of being learned form and moved past. I also have alot of opinions, so no "do this" type of shit here. I just feel we are becoming so sensitive we just swung the pendulum the entire other way instead of seek a balance of the two. We are all learning and this is what we truly NEED to learn, the balance. But you already wrote that song and know what I speak of. Thank you both for this podcast! Two of the most influential people in my entire life in one place. Bless and ONE LOVE!!! Thank you for all you do!
Apologizing, making amends and repairing harm are essential parts of the growth and healing process. When we hurt other people it’s not enough to just grow and move on. There’s a debt that needs to be paid. That’s not over sensitive, it’s just sensitive. Thanks for the kind words and I’m glad you’re rockin with us.
@@BrotherAli_Travelers Agreed, I also think we are saying the same things with different words. I own up to the "debt" as you put it, your words and words I would not choose, by changing how I act now. The ACTION is far more important than the words ever could be. Words can acknowledge a thing, but they cannot change it. The change is in us. That we no longer do those things. And by no means am I saying, you or I do not need to apologize thru words, because we do. We just put so much on it, I feel we forget whats really important, which is what we DO. We often find out in the back end our words were never matching our actions to begin with ;)
I cannot wait to place my first order at Oudimentary. I have been looking for a quality, sustainable, and intellegent seller of Oud for a few years. Inshallah I will be able to purchase from them as well as join your caravan Brother. Salam Alaikum

Great to hear stories from my favorites. I hope someday I'll have an opportunity to meet Slug, Ali, and Aes in the flesh!!!!
Glad you’re enjoying the podcast. Part two with Slug drops Monday Insha’Allah.
@@BrotherAli_Travelers hoping one day you will travel Vietnam!!!
Thank you Slug, Ant, Brother Ali & everyone at Rhymesayers...Much respect for all your music, talks, guidance & sharing of the knowledge gained along your journey & for always BEing true to yoU!!! Peace + Love. =)
Love back! Can’t wait for you to hear part two of this conversation on Monday
I wish I knew about this earlier when’s the next tour?
Man, Brother Ali and Slug sitting in a room.....this was such a powerful episode! I'm about to listen to part 2 today! Thats some serious energy right there. You inspire me on the daily and I appreciate everything you are doing! You've helped me through some serious life stuff and continue to help me get to a place of absolute gratitude....what an exquisite soul you are. Thanks for just being you and helping me to be comfortable being me.
Really appreciate this man!
This was a great conversation. I've been listening to Slug for 20 years and you for probably 15 or so. I'm big a fan of both of you.
Thanks so much for listening. Can’t wait for you to hear part two on Monday
Great and insightful interview, the kind that we don't see much of anymore. Salute fam.
Many thanks!
Thank you for REALLY being a part of this one. Glad you had a good time. Feel free to share with anyone who might dig it!
Much love brother Ali all the way from Aotearoa. Atmosphere is my new favourite I found through your music. Rugged man and the first immortal technique
Awesome. Thanks for checking in!
i have never related more to so much of what an artist oresented or said about themselves as i do with slug. You guys probably hear it all the time, but you really help people with your art and bring hope, joy and a bit of necessary lesson teaching hurt into the world. thank you.
He really is an incredible gift to us all. Thanks for rockin’ with us and please feel free to share!
Remember when you two battled at Scribble Jam. You both have come a long way, always been beautiful souls.
Seven/SeanOne
raised me.
You didn’t ask for the responsibility, but in the absence of a real father figure, the music taught me language,
principles, persona (vulnerability in masculinity), and how to change.
Thank you for teaching so much about how to live.
💚🌹
That was really interesting hearing your perspective of slug being that “big brother” figure. It’s crazy how much things like that shape who we become. You’re an awesome interviewer too I love how you framed your questions they really invited introspective thinking and answers 🙏
Been listening to yals music for so long! Glad to see yal still uploading
Yes indeed
I love you both so much!
Love back
Right out the gate, you're dropping real power. Immediately. Thank you for this, shouts out big homie slug :)
Thanks so much for listening.
Saw yall live in Austin !!!

Much love
Thank you for all you do.
Thanks for being a part of it.
Thank you so much for all you do. I've gotten so much from your music and words. But even more so my best freind has gotten so much from what you do and seeing him receive that makes me so happy. Appreciate you brother Ali, keep at it man your impacting people and doing exactly what your hoping to.
Much love!
@@BrotherAli_Travelers man thank you so much for the reply. I paused the video right away yo post that one so I could show some love since it's the first time I've gotten to interact with you. Ill probably comment after finishing part 2 because I want to put that out there.
We have two episodes (almost 4 hours) with Murs! Search it and enjoy!
This is church. Absolutely beautiful.

There it is!
Love life, peace out
I feel you man.
Thanks for listening!
WILL ALWAYS LOVE RHYMESAYERS 💯 💕
That was amazing!!!
Glad you dug it man! Come back next monday for part 2
Wow, this makes me love the music even more.
99% of the time that’s the case. People tell you not to meet your heroes, but I’ve met almost all of mine and have found them to be as or more beautiful as the art they give the world. If you get a chance you should click through the other guests we’ve had on the Travelers Podcast. It’s full of incredible people with amazing stores and insights to share.
Wonderful interview. Great hearing this from slug after listening for over 20 years. 🙏🙏

I remember seeing Slug and Ant sitting alone at the bar in Hamburg waagenbau before the show, and not having the guts to tell them how i love them. Glad i gave my man Ali a pound after the show.

Good for sharing and saying this, because many of us feel this 👍
Pretty sure long term exposure to slugs lyrics have calibrated my moral compass to align somewhat with his life experience. His big brother influence has been shared through his art and has a part in me being who I am today. One love.
I feel you man. Thanks for checking in. Looking forward to part two on Monday
@@BrotherAli_Travelers Thanks for bringing it to us. To reference your regrets at using certain slang on your earlier records, chill, you have more than compensated for any youthful ignorance with your development and all the work that followed. The positivity in your music is unparalleled. My man..

Along my journey I forgot that Slug was the man I wanted to be. I replaced him with success. Thank you for reminding me after all these years
Seems like what he’s trying to emphasize here is that we might inspire each other, but we are each responsible for our own journey
@@BrotherAli_Travelers Absolutely. We are all responsible for our own path. I have a better understanding now of what man I want to be and how to conduct myself as an artist. Thank you for that

Great interview (watched it earlier) Really enjoy hearing you both talk. Gotta get ANT on the podcast 🤞 also, love the two tracks you put out recently “more than this” and “going through it”
Thanks so much for her being here for the stuff we’re doing now. Don’t tell anybody but there’s a third installment and announcement coming about that body of work.
@@BrotherAli_Travelers your secret is safe with me. I look forward to it! thank you for responding
Fuck it I'm just gonna say it Slug in my opinion is the Goat all these years he's been consistent with his music & has put out great content.
God bless
This is so dope.
Thank you both for this.
Glad you like it! Excited for you to hear part two on Monday
