- Welcome to our Jeep to RV Toad (Dingy) Conversion Series. There a 6 videos in this series.
Part 4: Roadmaster Brake Light Relay Kit
Some vehicles brakes will override the turn signal light coming from the RV. Meaning if you use the right turn signal coming to a stop in the RV, the Jeep’s turn signal will change to a brake light instead. This kit will prevent that from happening.

Man...I can't tell you how much this series has helped me. Thanks so much!
Glad to hear it! 😀
This is an awesome series and enjoyable to watch. I used the info in these videos to set up our 2023 Jeep Gladiator. There are some very important differences in the newer, push-button start Jeeps that I learned from the experience. First, I didn't need, nor could I use the Brake-Lite Relay Kit. The brake light switch does not have a 12-volt feed, only a 5-volt signal. The computer then sends the 12 volts to the lights. The good news is, the brake lights do not function around 10 minutes after the engine is off so they don't override the turn signals. Bonus!
The bad news is, I couldn't power the brake monitor LED in the coach after 10 minutes for the same reason. Sadly, I didn't know about the lights not working after 10 minutes so I ran an additional wire from the Jeep's 4-way connector on the rear bumper to the 6-way connector newly installed on the base plate. Everything worked perfectly during the test. I realized my error, however, after the 10 minutes expired and my brake monitoring LED stopped working. Dang it. So, I had to go with an auxiliary brake light switch from Roadmaster. It's powered by the Jeep's battery. It was hard to find one in stock for the Gladiator. I found one at eTrailer.com. The part number for the 2023 Gladiator is RM-751497. Roadmaster makes them for the Wranglers as well.
Hopefully, this comment will help someone with a newer Jeep save some time and headaches.
Thanks for your added input. Hopefully it will help others with the answers they are looking for. 😊
We have gone through your series... Jeep to RV Toad conversion many times and we cannot thank you enough. Vids are exceptional and so easy to follow. I'm sure you have saved me major $$$. Plus you have given me projects to do with my father and also a sense of satisfaction and a better understanding of the jeep itself. You guys ROCK!
Thanks Scotty, our pleasure! BTW, all of our new RV and Jeep videos are on our other channel. ua-cam.com/users/GetGonewithUS
I don’t tow enough to direct wire my toad like you. I’m putting on some magnet pods and calling it a day as I only tow two three time a year. I did do everything else on your prior videos. They are awesome! Great job explaining. Some much help for people wanting to do this!👍
Thank you. We are glad you found the videos helpful. 😃
Love to watch good quality work not a hack job .👍
Thanks John! 😀
THANKS!! I did your Part 3 and 4 for the wiring, and just watching them a few times, I was able to do them both PERFECT!!!! BEST step by step instructions!! Only issue was they changed the Brake Light rely fuse, now it's double stacked which is nice! Again...KUDOS!!!
Did mine yesterday and my kit included the Tap a Fuse as well. Did you tap into the same fuse as in the video?
Your video editing is awesome! Not once did you seem cramped or contorted to work in that space!! (smile) What a pain in the neck, literally. One tip for future installers, be careful removing that connector, if you get to rambunctious, you can break the plastic tabs that hold the stop light switch to the mount. Yep, did it, it's a flimsy mount.
It would be easier with the seat out. LOL
Great video again. A little tip, butt connectors can come lose with vibration. So, put Super Glue in butt connector to give a little more holding power on the wires. I've never had one come lose. See you guys..
Thanks for the tip, we'll have to remember that! 😀👍
LOL I caught that one too, Lt Col, still an awesome video, well done. can't wait for the last video :)
Thanks! To be fair the Liberty is parked next to the WRANGLER. lol
I tried to hang in there with the wiring but I finally came to the conclusion that I will be using magnetic stop lamps once we get our Ready Brute hooked up.
Those work too. :)
Nice
I would have used a Normally Closed relay and then used power from the Motor-home to activate the relay disabling the brake lights only when you are towing the Jeep. :-)
We are not techs, considering we are not sure what you are talking about, so we went with what was easiest for us. LOL Thanks for the info though. :)
Thanks for creating this video series. It's really helping out big time.
I got the relay kit installed but want to double check I got it done correctly. Could you verify whether the blinkers blink with BOTH the key OUT and brake pedal NOT depressed? TIA!
If you are talking about when the Jeep is hooked up to the motorhome and you put on the blinkers, then yes, they should operate without the key in the ignition (depends on the year of your Jeep) or touching the brake. 😃
Thank you for yo-yo great videos. One question I have is do you keep the key in ignition while towing? Otherwise the break light indicator won’t come on.
No, we don't need to keep the key in the ignition on our 2017 for them to work.
Not sure if there is mistake with the break light relay install. Without key on if you depress breaks no lights, but with ignition on the light works.
@@sanjayasenanayake6934 That how it is supposed to work. Hook the Jeep up to your RV and step on the brakes in the RV. The brake lights on the Jeep should work then. If not something may not be wired correctly.
Awesome series of videos. I installed the brake relay today and added the extra 'red' wire connected to the 6-way on the front of my 2015 Jeep Wrangler Sport. I followed your install advice to the letter even using the same fuse for power. I double checked all wiring diagrams and fuse locations per your advise. All lights work exactly as advertised and I thank you for the exceptional DIY video. I plan to add the monitor light in the cab tomorrow.
Unfortunately, after all was installed and buttoned up, the 'check engine' light came on. Before I start trouble shooting, I was wondering if you or your readers have heard of this happening or if you have any thoughts on why the 'check engine' light might have come on.
That seems odd. We haven't experienced an problems since the install. The only time we have ever had a check engine light come on in any of our Wranglers was due to the gas cap not being tighten all the way. Hopefully someone else will have more insight for you. Good Luck, keep us informed on what you find out.
Yeah! I thought it was odd too. I removed the neg battery terminal for 5 minutes to see if the light would reset. Yea! It went out! My best guess is that maybe I got a glitch reading when I started the engine with M1 and M30 fuses removed. Just another opportunity to create chaos out of calm then calm out of chaos.
"Just another opportunity to create chaos out of calm then calm out of chaos." Been there done that many times. :)

Wow great job. I don't think I would ever work with electrical like that in a car. Awesome you've pretty much finished everything for this now. BTW, you still plan to come down to Tampa? I'm still up for meeting somewhere during the day. We can do a Jeep photo shoot.
We sent you a PM. :)
Great videos! Have you run across an relay option for JK that requires key to be turned on to the ACC setting to unlock the wheel. My 2007 requires this, so I don’t believe your fix for 2018 will help me, agree?
Thanks
Thinking about this more, maybe you found a fuse that was only hot while engine running and not hot in ACC position?
Thanks again
We have a 2017 and the key in not required to be in the ignition. There is no steering wheel lock. 😀
@@WeRmudfun Got it! For anyone in the same situation as I’m in with required key on position to unlock steering wheel, I’ve found that I can connect the brake relay using the rear seat warmer fuse since it is only on when engine is running. I’m also adding a charge wire to my six pin connector to ensure I don’t have any drain on battery while key is in on position. Thanks again for your help.
@@roarkmcdonald3636 Thanks for sharing the info you found so others will know. :)
Has anyone mentions having two plugs instead of one? On our 2014 Wrangler Sport I have the plug you have with three wires and then a seperate plug with two wires which includes the white and brown.
Just a guess...factory installed tow hitch? 😀
Can you post a video or instructions on how to wire an '05 Toyota Sienna for Rv towing ? Or using the '05 Sienna as a Toad !!
Sorry, I don't have one that I can do it too. We just did our own vehicles. :)
Great video. I was getting ready to order the Roadmaster when I stumbled on the NSA brake relay. The neat thing about the NSA take on this issue is that you wouldn't have to run a line into your fuse box. This relay works by powering open the circuit. So when you are ready to tow you plug in the relay to your cigarette lighter. This opens your brake switch. Once your done towing you unplug the relay and your Jeep brakes lights work normally. This will save me from having to run a line to my engine compartment and seems simpler.
www.readybrake.com/store/p15/Brake_Circuit_Disconnect_BCD-110.html
Thanks. :) We looked at NSA, but decided the Roadmaster was a better option for us. It costs less and once installed, it doesn't add an extra step in the setup up process. We like things cheap and simple. LOL
After looking at the location of the Cig Lighter that has constant power...I am thinking that the NSA brake relay might not be as clean as I like. I am leaning back towards the Roadmaster relay. I also like your point of the simplicity of it. I would like to have indication in my RV that my brake is actually be depressed. I believe this relay is the same as this one sold by Grainger.
www.grainger.com/product/5ZMU0?&cm_sp=Product_Details-_-Customers_Also_Viewed-_-AZIDPRR_1714-9435-3&cm_vc=AZIDPRR_1714-9435-3&req=Customers_Also_Viewed
Here is a wiring diagram from eTrailer
www.etrailer.com/Tow-Bar-Braking-Systems/Roadmaster/RM-88400.html
So if it is actually the relay from Grainger or one similar when the Jeep's ignition is off and you press the brake then power should go down leg 87a or the Blue wire.
Do you know if that happens?
If the Blue wire with a ground is sent to the RV cab it should illuminate an led to indicate when the brake is depressed. I need to look at the diagrams for the trailer plugs to see if going with a 6 or 7 plug would give me an easy way to get that signal to my RV.
When we made this video, we showed how we added an extra wire for future use to hook up a light in the RV so we will know when the brakes are actually applied in the Jeep. We will hopefully be doing a video in the near future on how we setup up ours to do that. :)
Awesome! Your videos are great.
Thank you! :)
Hi. I followed your directions to hook up a Hopkins #56200 Towed Vehicle Wiring Kit. It worked fine on my 2018 Jeep Wrangler JK. I followed your instructions to hook up a Roadmaster #88400 Brake-lite Relay kit. When testing it, my two side brake lites worked but not the center one above the spare tire. I contacted Roadmaster and they couldn't tell me why this might be happening. They suggested undoing the relay back to the original wiring to see if the center lite would work. It did! So having the relay kit attached is for some reason preventing the third lite from working. I also contacted Hopkins to see if they knew what was happening but they had no clue. Any suggestions? Thanks
That's the way ours works. We were told that the third brake light is on a different relay.
@@WeRmudfun Thanks for responding. I finally got it to work. With the fuse holder in the package, it required the OEM fuse and the 10 amp fuse supplied in the package. I originally had it hooked up with just the one fuse they supplied. When both fuses were used, it work fine. Thanks again. I enjoy watching your videos.
@@darrellbrown6270 Glad you figured it out. You had me going there for a minute. I know our 3rd brake light only comes on when the brake in the jeep is actually being applied, not when we test it hooked up to the RV checking the light. The surge brake on the tow bar turns it on. Happy trails. :)
@@darrellbrown6270 thank you so much for the tip. I just installed the brake relay and only used one fuse. After rechecking all my connections and removing the third light to check it I found your comment. 30 seconds later I’ve got all three lights working properly. Thanks so much!!
If you disconnect the battery while towing the jeep do you still need to do this?
I don't see why you would, but I can't test that. Next time you are hooked put the RV signal on and step on the brakes in the Jeep. That will give you the answer. Good Luck. 😀
Parfait, j'adore les Jeeps modifiées. Je veux son adresse pour acheter une Jeep.
Hi, I watched video and by-passed the extra red wire attached to the white/brown wire. Attached green wire to white/brown wire. I did this because watching a video from eTrailer they show exactly what I did. Noe ESG light comes on and Cruise control doesn't come on. Any suggestions? Thank you. and Thanks for the video..
I would ask eTrailer, you said you followed their instructions. We had no issues the way we did it. Good Luck!
Thank you for this video. I followed it step by step. But one thing I noticed is that now my CHMSL doesn't work when pressing on the brakes. (not with the MH connected but just normal) and all the fuses are fine. Any ideas? Does yours not work anymore either?
Sorry I have no idea, ours worked fine.
@@WeRmudfun for whatever reason my brake light switch went bad. Bought a new One and now everything works fine.
Sorry to hear that, but glad you were able to fix it. 🙂
Does your license plate light work while towing with this setup?
I would have to check. We never drive at night.
@@WeRmudfun really appreciate it! Followed your advice and plan and worked great. Was wondering about license plate light now.
Great video.I would like to know if you remove the fuse from constant power to the brake light so it does not interfere with the RV signal and you do not have to install the relay?I have 2011 Winnebago Navion &2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Chief it is 4 doors Do you think is it going Ok with the same as your setup?I am really like your Video and Thank you very much
We are glad you liked the videos. The problem we would have had with pulling the fuse is that it would add another step to connecting and disconnecting the Wrangler to the RV. Putting the fuse back in is not a step I would want to forget. :) We only know our motorhome and Wrangler. You need to check the towing capacity of your motorhome. If it can tow the weight of your wrangler, this setup should work, again though we are not experts.
Thank you for a quick response.I have another question I bought the Blue Ox Tow Bar Clevis for Baseplates Currie Enterprises CE-9033 the two Pinholes are not aligning.Do you have to grind to fix?Thank you
I ran a drill through mine just to clean it up a bit. If they are way off, I'd get a hold of Currie Enterprises and ask them about it.
jist git a harnis whiththe diods in it and plug it in and that is it I got 1 for min
You mentioned installing a light in the motorhome that would tell when the brakes are actually on but, I have watched all 5 episodes and I haven't seen that part. Did you ever install that. I would like a light in the motorhome that would light up when the brake pedal in the "toad" is actuated.. Thanks.. Great videos.
Thanks. No we have not done the video for the brake LED light yet.
I want to know whenever the brake pedal is pulled so I can see if the brakes are actually being applied and also use this to make sure the Jeep brakes are NOT being applied when I am not wanting them applied. I tapped a wire onto the "hot" side of the brake switch wire which I had cut for the installation of the relay I installed as you did in Part 3. I ran this wire to the front of the Wrangler and connected it to one of the unused terminals on the connector that is for the lights. I then ran a wire down the motorhome brake line and frame to an unused terminal on the "trailer" receptor at the rear of the motorhome. I used an incandescent bulb mounted on the dash of the motorhome and connected one lead to the wire coming from the rear of the motorhome and the other lead from the light to ground. However, whatever I did in the motorhome such as turn on tail lights or turn signals, made the light come on. If I unplugged the Jeep all was OK in the motorhome and the light did not come on. Not sure why this happened unless it is because I used and incandescent bulb. I am planning to get an LED socket and bulb and try this. Any other suggestions? Thanks
I'm sorry, I don't have any suggestions. We haven't had a chance to get to that and test it yet. That will a future project.
I appreciate your answering my question so in all fairness I need to report back to you with my final answer to this situation. After a good night's sleep I went back out to my project of the installation of a brake "monitor" light only to find out that in my old age I made the mistake of looking at the wiring diagram for which wires to which terminal on the plug. Yep, I had the ground and brake light wires reversed. I changed that and now all works great. I can tell if my brake pedal in the Jeep is pulled whether it be by the Ready Brake or perhaps if the cable should become entangled. Thanks for your response to my previous questions. I really enjoyed your videos of all 5 steps to setting up a Towed.. RIVVITT
Glad it all worked out for you in the end. I can't tell you how many times, I had to trace wires only to find out I hooked something up wrong.
What happened with the red wire you left tailed out?

I notice that this is a Roadmaster kit, will the conversion kit work for a blue ox system?
We are using a Readybrute tow bar with Blue Ox clevises. This kit has nothing to do with any tow bar. It is strictly to make sure that the toad brake lights do not override the signal coming from the RV. As far as I know Roadmaster is the only company that makes a kit for this purpose. This is the only thing from Roadmaster we are using in our setup. :)
Does this, or any of the other work making this towable, violate the warranty?
I would ask your dealer to be sure. The owners manual says the Wrangler can be towed 4 down, but doesn't come that way from the factory. Jeep is funny when it comes to their warranty. In order to put a lift on the Wrangler, it has to be a Mopar Lift and their service dept has to install it or it voids the warranty. I'm not a lawyer, but that sounds wrong. I hear different dealers interpret the warranty differently, so again if you are concerned ask your dealer.
We installed a toad package on our Jeep Liberty when it was brand new (2011) and never had an issue with it in the last 6 years.
Has anyone done this modification and somehow triggered the Jeeps antitheft system? I installed the brake relay yesterday, and it works as expected, but now the Jeep will not send any power to the starter and I have a flashing red light on the right side of the instrument cluster. pulled the battery connections to try and reset the system, that didn't work. So now I am stumped.
Sorry to hear you ran into a snag. Try searching online. Good Luck.
@@WeRmudfun I am now. Heading to the dealership shortly. Love your video’s super helpful!!! Keep up the great work

When you add the "fuse tap", how do you know which fuse blade to connect it to?
I don't believe it matters which blade you use as long as there is power to the fuse only when the key is turned on.
@@WeRmudfun The concern is where you are tapping power from. One side of the blade fuse is switched battery power (preferred). The other side of the blade fuse is the load. They relay you just added consumes coil power which is then added to the original load for that particular fuse. Depending on how the fuse was sized by the OEM, you might be making it more prone to blowing/opening. Most fused circuits have a nice margin built-in for slight over current, but you should always aim tap off the "feed" side and not the "load" side. Now that I think about it, the best way to verify would be to remove the fuse and then check to see which side gets power when the key is turned on. That way you know which side to put the fuse tap on. Excellent video series!
@@static75 Thanks for the info. We have not had any problems with the fuse, but will check to see which is the feed side.
