Russians who left their country since the invasion of Ukraine - BBC News

  • According to one estimate, as many as 200,000 Russians have left their country since the start of the war.
Over 25,000 of those have arrived in Georgia. Some of those who have left Russia are activists who fear repercussions for protesting against the war in Ukraine. These activists continue to work from their new base in Georgia.
While many have welcomed the Russians leaving their homes some Georgians worry that Russia already has too much influence in their country and fear that a large influx of Russians could increase that influence.

I'm Russian, work in IT and 3 weeks ago I arrived to Georgia.
Thank you, BBC for this film. I'm glad to see we have compassion. Because psychologically it's the worst period that ever happened to many of us.
I was in court for protesting and I saw plenty of agression from our own fellow citizens.
We are "unwanted" in our country, plus we can be victims of discrimination outside. I still canoot understand how to live with this label on me bacause I'm a part of this country and cannot understand what I will do with that.
But such films as this and people in the comments who show compassion and understanding to us make me feel better. Thank you!

I disagree. Being forced to leave your homeland due to the government becoming oppressive is already traumatizing as you have to figure out where to live, how to earn income, make friends, leave loved ones and so on. It's hard. Leaving already means that these people don't want to be part of the Putin's Russia. And it's not like they could do much inside Russia as the repression of protesters is a very real threat for oneself and one's family. Let these people do business, work and integrate into other cultures and thus show that there is another kind of Russian person - one not based on vodka drinking or ignorant war supporting stereotypes. It is up to the West to stop Putin as it has always been.

There is no room for protest even in social media, people are getting fined for wearing yellow jampers with blue jeans or holding blank sheets of paper (and by that law of "discriditation of the armed forces" the second time you say something "too pacifist" you might get 10 times the first fine or a prison sentence to up to 6 years). But then, how can you keep living a normal life knowing what is actually happening?
Personally, I can't. After being fired from the work in an international company that is stopping business in Russia and after seeng the horrors of Bucha I've decided to also leave. Just wrapping up some things here. Luckily some friends are ready to help on a new place.

.. Here is the key to the casket .. "Under the Azovstal industrial zone, owned by oligarch Rinat Akhmetov, presumably the illegitimate son of former Ukrainian President Kuchma, there are 24 km of tunnels at a depth of up to 30 meters. There is also a secret NATO facility PIT-404 - and a secret NATO biological laboratory with biological weapons. At the PIT-404 facility, NATO officers are blocked. The tunnels are equipped with a bunker system with armor protection. There are about 240 foreigners inside, including officers of NATO and the French Foreign Legion, as well as biolab staff. Their security, funded by Akhmetov, has up to 3,000 people.
The biolab under the Azovstal plant in Mariupol at the so-called PIT-404 facility was built and operated by Metabiota, a company associated with Hunter Biden, Rinat Akhmetov and Vladimir Zelensky. In the laboratories of this facility, tests were conducted to create bioweapons. Thousands of Mariupol residents have become "guinea pigs" in these terrible trials. And mostly Western "specialists" took part in these inhumane experiments!!!
Intelligence officers and special operations officers of France were unable to take their colleagues out of Mariupol. That's why Macron called the Kremlin so often and asked for "humanitarian corridors."..Some French intelligence officers died during the rescue operation. The head of French intelligence, Eric Vido, was dismissed on March 31, 2022 for the failures of French intelligence in the war in Ukraine. Officers from the USA, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Turkey, Sweden, Poland and Greece are now blocked in the dungeons of Azovstal. American Lieutenant General Roger Clothier, captured by the People's Militia of the DPR the other day from a downed helicopter, was tracked by the GRU of the General Staff and the SVR of Russia in Mariupol based on the results of external surveillance of his mistress in Turkey in Izmir. A citizen of Ukraine, known to intelligence as Klute, always accompanied the general as a traveling wife, confidant and translator. As soon as it was reported that this lady had arrived in Mariupol, Russia launched a military operation and blocked the city.

However, there are also such "apolitical" creatures taking care exclusively of their business. Don't let them deceive you. The more russians come to your country the more alert you must be. Don't forget your history, don't forget the events of the russo-Georgian War in 2008. Each action of yours must show them that they are only guests in Georgia. If you hire them make sure they learn and know your language. Make sure they speak Georgian in all public institutions and so on.
We (Ukrainians) forgot our history and tolerated all russian manifestations in our country. Now we are paying the highest possible price to protect ourselves and live our independent life.

It's not a hard decision, it's either leaving or betraying oneself, or staying and living in a hell hole which is what Russia is at the moment. I have lived in China for a while, it's not life. China is a hell hole, I was a foreigner there and yet I still carry PTSD over those few months that I was there, over the things done to me. Young people would come to me to tell me that they wanted to leave, escape the regime. People in these countries are breathing but are not living, and the youth is always eager to leave, so might as well leave now while they are young enough to build their lives elsewhere. Also these young adults are only starting their lives, they can start it wherever they want to. It's easier for them to leave than it would be for an older person who has already built something in Russia.

I am inspired by the bravery of the young Russian women interviewed in this piece, who have left their home country, possibly for good, because they have a strong moral sense and understand that their government is committing atrocities against Ukranians. While they are spending their time and limited resources trying to help fleeing Ukranians, the "not political" Russian businessman seems only to be interested in avoiding sanctions. In my view he should be deported right back to Russia until he can understand how his prioritizing of money-making over humanity, just as the Russian oligarchs have done for decades, has allowed Putin to remain in power and led to this appalling war.

The "not political" Russian businessman only moved to Georgia because he cannot access his foreign funds from within Russia. It is however Georgia's decision whether to welcome his ilk or not. There are plenty of Russians who have moved abroad for freedom of travel and the ability to tap their own funds. That does not make them pro Putin.

The girl in the last bit didn't betray her government, her government betrayed her by taking her freedoms away and engaging into a vicious war with a neighbouring country. She made the right choice to leave that hell hole behind.

This is an important an interesting perspective. However, referring to these people as "exiles" is inaccurate. They are political and economic *refugees* of the war. They fled their country to avoid economic hardship or imprisonment, but they were not sent out of their country by the government.

    • @nonionbeezness
      @nonionbeezness 2 роки тому

I think leaving because of the consequences of what the government would do to them, is the definition of “exile”.
“Refugee” is applied to people unable to contribute to the war effort in defense but being subject to the destruction of direct war action. There is no substantive if any direct war fighting inside of Russian borders ; Ukraine isn’t bombing it shooting at people inside Russia that we can see first hand evidence of. So not refugees.

I have a 🇷🇺 Russian friend from university who now lives and works in the 🇨🇳 Chinese city of Wuhan.
According to her, she feels "free-er" in China than in Russia as, in China she's still able to criticize Putin, criticize the Russian government and using VPNs (thus allowing her to bypass Chinese censors), she can freely post on social media.
It says a lot when an authoritarian, police state, like 🇨🇳 China feels free-er than your country of origin.

3:48 "Yes i betrayed my government" I am not sure about that, to me it feels more like it betrayed you first by
not letting you speak up in protests, not having independent media, not letting you be who you want to be and express yourself the way you are.
Leaving once home to help those who are misstreated by once leader.
These folks have the heart on the right spot i'd say.
I hope Georgians can come to see that.
Appart from that, Georgia too may need some more help, economicly and militarily.
